Authors Laura Ungar and Matthew Perrone chose to cite heavily pro-abortion sources, failing to interview anyone with an opposing view. Under REMS, prescribers of the drug are <em>supposed to have provisions to handle abortion pill failures or complications<\/em>. Instead of abiding by the regulations, which are policed by those who profit from the drug (Danco and GenBioPro), abortion providers simply instruct women to present to potentially overcrowded <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-blame-pro-life-abortion-pill-er\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency rooms<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Danco and the FDA always\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-dangerous-safety-requirement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">understood<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-blame-pro-life-abortion-pill-er\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency rooms would be a necessary<\/a> element in place to treat abortion pill clients.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Biased OB\/GYNs<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The AP cited abortion activist Ushma Upadhyay (a <a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/ushma.upadhyay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/profiles.ucsf.edu\/ushma.upadhyay&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1743263449997000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0hVSqR7vGK5D2vbUbd-9GI\">recipient<\/a> of multiple awards from the National Abortion Federation) and Pratima Gupta (a practicing abortionist and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/about\/leadership-and-governance\/board-of-directors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">board member<\/a> for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists &#8211; ACOG), while suggesting that all medical professionals support the abortion pill as &#8220;safe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the Associated Press failed to interview a single pro-life expert with an opposing view.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;OB-GYNs say a tiny fraction of patients suffer &#8216;major&#8217; or &#8216;serious&#8217; adverse events after taking mifepristone,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mifepristone-abortion-pill-makary-22576dbfafca1afe0146ee496540c9a4\">wrote the AP<\/a>. &#8220;Medical professionals call it &#8216;among the safest medications&#8217; ever approved by the FDA. But a Christian conservative group that sued the FDA over the drug says it has caused &#8216;tens of thousands&#8217; of &#8217;emergency complications.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That &#8220;Christian conservative group&#8221; was actually made up of pro-life <em>medical professionals<\/em> \u2014 something Associated Press chose to distort.<\/p>\n<p>OB\/GYNs who push abortion pills as &#8220;safe&#8221; frequently seem to either commit abortions, or have associations with the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/top-myths-debunked-american-college-obstetricians-gynecologists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pro-abortion<\/a> American College of Obstructions and Gynecologists (ACOG). As Live Action News has documented, ACOG co-signs Big Abortion&#8217;s profit making ventures, willingly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/acog-change-talk-abortion-neutral\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contorting<\/a> their own language to get <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-abortion-groups-quietly-change-cardiac-definitions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">behind<\/a> unapproved and experimental <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/acog-rh-testing-guidelines-helping-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expansions<\/a> of chemical abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The Associated Press failed to mention concerns expressed by the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (AAPLOG), a pro-life medical association, or speak to any of the thousands of plaintiff doctors who <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/four-shocking-admissions-supreme-court-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially filed<\/a> the lawsuit challenging both the drug&#8217;s approval and expansions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, however, the United States Supreme Court <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fact-check-supreme-court-abortion-pill-access\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ruled<\/a>\u00a0that the plaintiff doctors in the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM) lawsuit\u00a0<em>did not have standing to sue. <\/em>Since then, three states likely to have standing have chosen to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/judge-rules-states-intervene-abortion-pill-lawsuit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">intervene<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/assets.aclu.org\/live\/uploads\/2023\/06\/177117394490.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">file a complaint<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mifepristone&#8217;s Black Box Warning \u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The AP reported:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>The prescribing information included in the packaging for mifepristone tablets lists slightly different statistics for what it calls &#8216;serious adverse reactions.&#8217; It cites ranges for how frequently various complications occur: 0.03% to 0.5% for transfusion; 0.2% for sepsis and 0.04% to 0.6% for hospitalization related to medication abortions. The ranges reflect findings across various relevant studies, experts said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And by &#8220;experts,&#8221; they mean pro-abortion ones. Left out of the AP story is the fact that mifepristone\u2019s own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 label<\/a> contains a black box warning for sepsis, bleeding, and other life-threatening risks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mifepristone results in a completed abortion 97.4% of the time, according to U.S. studies cited in the FDA label. But in 2.6% of cases, a surgical intervention is needed. And 0.7% of the time, the pregnancy continues,&#8221; the AP claimed.<\/p>\n<p>This is no small number, as a nearly 3% failure rate would result in more than 19,000 women needing additional care \u2014 possibly even emergency care, since a failed abortion can result in infection which can <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amber-thurman-pro-abortion-state-keisha-atkins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lead to sepsis<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Published percentages for ER visits on mifepristone\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 label<\/a> indicate that 2.9 to 4.6% of women who take abortion drugs end up in the emergency room, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicating<\/a>\u00a0that abortion pill ER visits could be in the\u00a0<em>tens of thousands<\/em>\u00a0every year. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addition<\/a>, the FDA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DANCO_MedGuide_ENG_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medication guide<\/a>\u00a0acknowledges that as many as seven percent (7%) of women will need surgery after taking mifepristone \u201cto stop bleeding\u201d or to complete the abortion.<\/p>\n<p>These percentages, against the 642,000 annual abortion pill data from 2023, could result in <em>39,000 to 45,000<\/em> incidents each year.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/telabortion-abortion-pill-study-increased-complications-er\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>-documented\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/expand-access-abortion-pill-tied-eugenics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gynuity Health Projects (GHP)<\/a> telabortion study also found that six percent (6%) of participants (70 out of 1,157) faced complications from the abortion pill, resulting in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ER or urgent care visits<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_307576\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\">\n<div id=\"attachment_307576\" style=\"width: 859px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307576\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-307576\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER.jpg\" alt=\"Mifepristone Jan 2023 label shows percentage of women taking abortion pill visit Emergency room (ER)\" width=\"849\" height=\"1031\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-307576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER.jpg 959w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER-576x700.jpg 576w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER-768x933.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Mifepristone-Jan-2023-label-shows-percentage-of-women-taking-abortion-pill-visit-ER-500x607.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-307576\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mifepristone Jan 2023 label shows percentage of women taking abortion pill visit ER<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In addition, emergency department staff <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alert-er-docs-undiagnosed-ectopic-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">warned<\/a> that women are presenting to ERs with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-abortion-pill-fda-ectopic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies<\/a> after taking abortion pills. Additionally, some state data <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/shock-abortion-complications-triple-pennsylvania\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicated<\/a>\u00a0complications may be on the rise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><strong>Biased study and authors cited\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;The definition that scientists generally use for serious adverse events includes blood transfusions, major surgery, hospital admissions and death, said Ushma Upadhyay, one of the authors of that\u00a0<span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25560122\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\">2015 study,<\/a>&#8221; the AP claimed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Randall K. O\u2019Bannon, Ph.D. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-self-managed-abortion-safe-research-refutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> disputed the study&#8217;s claim (read at <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortionist-self-managed-abortion-safe-research-refutes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Action News)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">That <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/files\/upadhyay-jan15-incidence_of_emergency_department_visits.pdf\">study<\/a> from Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/can-we-trust-new-study-claiming-women-certain-about-abortions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANSIRH<\/a>) was funded by &#8220;an anonymous foundation&#8221; which has in other studies been shown to be the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-money-trail-abortion-pill-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buffett Foundation<\/a>, one of the original investors in the abortion pill. Buffett is also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/18\/magazine\/18abortion-t.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">primary financier<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paying-millions-abortion-training-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bixby Center\u2019s<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/future-abortion-obgyn-residency-trained-thousands-kill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan Residency Program<\/a> at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paying-millions-abortion-training-taxpayers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortionist training program<\/a>, and funds <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/top-myths-debunked-american-college-obstetricians-gynecologists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ACOG.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"LinkEnhancement\">ANSIRH was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/about\/ansirh-founder-felicia-hance-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founded<\/a> by abortionist Felicia H. Stewart and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/regents-of-the-university-of-california-san-francisco-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> by the Packard Foundation. Packard provided early financial assistance to the abortion pill\u2019s U.S. manufacturer, Danco.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The study\u2019s authors are tied to groups that promote, train, or commit abortions, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Sheila Desai<\/strong>, whose\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionaccess.org\/sheila-desai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online bio<\/a> says she &#8220;led and contributed to research at the Guttmacher Institute&#8221; a former &#8220;special affiliate&#8221; of Planned Parenthood. Desai was associated with ANSIRH and received awards from the Society of Family Planning and the National Abortion Federation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tracey Weitz<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090701011509\/http:\/\/ansirh.org\/about\/history.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">co-founded<\/a> ANSIRH\u00a0before leaving to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tracy-weitz-9903b31\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">become<\/a> the Buffett Foundation\u2019s director of U.S. programs in 2014. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tracy-weitz-9903b31\/details\/experience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LinkedIn page<\/a> reveals past associations with UCSF, ACLU, and Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, which was later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/08\/29\/us\/29bcparenthood.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disaffiliated<\/a> from PPFA for serious problems.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ushma Upadhyay<\/strong> is a University of California San Francisco (UCSF) <a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/ushma-upadhyay-phd-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professor<\/a> who advocated a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-abortion-pill-fda-ectopic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">no test\/no touch<\/a>\u201d protocol for the abortion pill, which eliminated important preliminary labs, testing, and ultrasounds \u2014\u00a0potentially placing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women in harm\u2019s way<\/a>. She also works with ANSIRH and has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2023-01-06\/abortion-pills-pharmacies-fda-cvs-walgreens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that the FDA should \u201cremove as many barriers as possible\u201d from the abortion pill. Upadhyay oversaw the biased \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/what-telehealth-chat-study-prove-cant-trusted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California Home Abortion by Telehealth (CHAT)<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792?term=%22Ushma+Upadhyay%22&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Study<\/a>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-money-trail-abortion-pill-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Grossman<\/a><\/strong> is a vocal proponent of expanding abortion and an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/facebook-unbiased-fact-checkers-anything-but\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortionist<\/a>\u00a0with multiple\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-financial-conflicts-interest-politicians-media\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">conflicts of interest<\/a> surrounding abortion pill studies. Grossman served as <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150420045747\/http:\/\/www.ibisreproductivehealth.org\/about-us\/staff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VP of Research<\/a> for Ibis Reproductive Health, which was being <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20150420123345\/http:\/\/www.ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a>\u00a0by Danco. Today, Grossman is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/people\/grossman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">senior adviser<\/a> at Ibis, which was still <em>directly<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20200130190128\/https:\/\/ibisreproductivehealth.org\/funders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/secrecy-abortion-pill-maker-investors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danco<\/a>\u00a0as recently as 2020. Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/follow-money-pro-abortion-group-suicide-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0documented that SFP was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(15)30069-X\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded<\/a> in 2005 with a generous contribution from the Packard Foundation; it <a href=\"http:\/\/990s.foundationcenter.org\/990pf_pdf_archive\/476\/476032365\/476032365_201612_990PF.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">receives<\/a>\u00a0millions from the Buffett Foundation.\u00a0Over past years,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/billionaires-behind-abortion-wealthy-population-control\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion philanthropist<\/a>\u00a0and abortion pill investor Warren Buffett (the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation) has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.grantmakers.io\/profiles\/v0\/476032365-susan-thompson-buffett-foundation\/?query=society&amp;grantee_name=SOCIETY%20OF%20FAMILY%20PLANNING\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poured<\/a>\u00a0over $15.3 million into SFP.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>AP dismisses abortion pill-related ER visits<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-abortion-pill-visit-er-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">other media outlets<\/a> that favor abortion, the Associated Press claimed &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-abortion-pill-visit-er-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ER visits<\/a> don\u2019t always reflect big problems,&#8221; later citing Upadhyay in claiming that &#8220;Some people may go there after a medication abortion because they want to be checked out or have questions but don\u2019t have a doctor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Upadhyay also claimed that women \u201cdon\u2019t want to go to their primary care provider about their abortion\u201d because of stigma.<\/p>\n<p>The AP didn&#8217;t mention how the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/rems\/Mifepristone_2023_03_23_Prescriber_Agreement_Form_for_Danco_Laboratories_LLC.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prescriber agreement<\/a> (March 2023) for the abortion pill requires prescribers to have the \u201c[a]bility to provide surgical intervention in cases of incomplete abortion or severe bleeding or have made plans to provide such care through others, and be able to assure patient access to medical facilities equipped to provide blood transfusions and resuscitation, if necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the Obama FDA removed requirements to report all non-fatal adverse events for the abortion pill under the safety system known as REMS, then requiring only deaths to be reported. Those would be just the deaths the manufacturer is made aware of.<\/p>\n<p>To circumvent that, bad actors inside the industry tell abortion clients not to call <em>them<\/em>, but to instead present to emergency rooms if experiencing abortion pill complications.
