Edits have been made for clarity.<\/i>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recently had a conversation with a fellow Christian about Trump\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/02\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-expands-access-to-in-vitro-fertilization-ivf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Executive Order<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to reduce barriers to accessing in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures. This discussion revealed to me that many people, even in Christian churches, seem confused about the ethical dilemmas surrounding IVF. This is unsurprising, as some politicians who oppose abortion have also championed IVF, blurring the line between ethical and unethical reproductive procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Should &#8220;safeguarding&#8221; IVF really be the goal?<\/h3>\n<p><b>The White House recently<\/b><b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/1891962340796448980\"><b>tweeted<\/b><\/a><b> that Trump\u2019s EO will \u201csafeguard&#8221; IVF and &#8220;lower costs&#8230; for American families.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. government has an obligation to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/constitution.congress.gov\/constitution\/preamble\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">uphold the common good<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but officeholders striving to make it more affordable to access a procedure that experiments with and treats as disposable the lives of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/howwebecameafamily.com\/how-many-fetuses-are-killed-annually-by-ivf.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of human beings annually \u2014 IVF \u2014 means that they are failing to uphold the welfare of our most vulnerable fellow citizens. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One question that must be asked is whether IVF can actually be considered \u201cfertility care\u201d at all since the procedure only masks the underlying issues of infertility instead of healing them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As stated by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.\u2019s presidential running mate, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2024\/03\/28\/robert-f-kennedy-vice-president-nicole-shanahan-ivf-00149523\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nicole Shanahan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, IVF is \u201cone of the biggest lies that\u2019s being told about women\u2019s health today.\u201d While RFK Jr. has tweeted that neither he nor Trump is against IVF and that they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RobertKennedyJr\/status\/1837263154478563798\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">want couples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get the help they need to have a baby,\u201d he has also prioritized finding the root causes of the country\u2019s increase in infertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who seek fertility treatments via IVF are often diagnosed with \u201cunexplained infertility.\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_l2Z12OcAzQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocrinologist Dr. Lauren Rubal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stated that after learning more about<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/complete-guide-to-fertility-awareness-methods\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness-based methods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she learned a lot about treating reproductive issues \u2014 information that was previously unknown to her despite her many years of practice. She explained that the literature revealed that only about 6% of OB-GYNs and family medicine physicians were able to correctly answer questions about the efficacy of fertility awareness-based methods in achieving and avoiding pregnancy. Their lack of knowledge and understanding of such methods is a disservice to their patients.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNon-abandonment is one of a physician&#8217;s central ethical obligations\u2026&#8221; wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7847649\/\">physicians Timothy E. Quill and Christine K. Cassel<\/a>, &#8220;There is a world of difference between facing an uncertain future alone and facing it with a committed, caring, knowledgeable partner who will not shy away from difficult decisions when the path is unclear.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is, therefore, the duty of every physician <em>not to abandon<\/em> their patients to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/vitro-fertilization-ivf-market-size-184800679.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multi-million dollar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> IVF industry but instead to help them in seeking alternative, restorative reproductive medicine treatments that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/practicalmamawellness.com\/?page_id=3022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">balance hormones, help make lifestyle changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, detox <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/ELDfanpdpKE?si=6XyKzhEaHoc6uY6B\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heavy metals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/06\/the-ivf-alternatives-tim-walz-doesnt-want-you-to-talk-about\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provide surgeries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/femmhealth.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restore overall health<\/span><\/a>, and show strong <a href=\"https:\/\/iirrm.org\/hope-after-ivf-rrm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">success rates<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Yes, we want more babies&#8230; ethically.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>President Trump stated that one of his main reasons for expanding access to IVF is the fact that \u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MJTruthUltra\/status\/1829268725259772288\"><b>We need more children in our country<\/b><\/a><b>\u201d and \u201c<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/albertmohler\/status\/1892393781539872832\"><b>We want more babies<\/b><\/a><b>.\u201d\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, we want more babies! The issue hasn\u2019t to do with the beautiful children created through IVF, but with an industry that takes advantage of the vulnerability of those struggling with infertility and treats human life as expendable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Children are precious and worthy of life and love no matter how they\u2019re conceived, whether it be out of wedlock, through rape, IVF, etc., and no parents should regret the existence of their children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, this doesn\u2019t mean that every practice that brought them into existence is, therefore, automatically ethical.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/16\/1238966404\/how-ivf-is-complicating-republicans-abortion-messaging\">Kansas Senator Roger Marshall<\/a> stated, &#8220;There&#8217;s nothing more pro-family than supporting the birth of babies.&#8221; Yes, being pro-family is important, but IVF treats children \u2014 part of our families \u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as if they are products, selecting which children to transfer or freeze \u2014 and then making the painful decision of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/09\/18\/tim-walzs-position-on-ivf-shows-how-extreme-he-is\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what to do with those who are \u201cleft over<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further, considering that the process of IVF ends preborn lives at a higher rate than abortion, IVF is not \u201cpro-life.\u201d As Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-destroys-embryos-higher-rate-abortion\/\">reported in 2022<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In-vitro fertilization (IVF) is carried out 2.5 million times annually around the world \u2014 but each year only 500,000 babies are actually born from the IVF procedure, according to research published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbmojournal.com\/article\/S1472-6483%2818%2930598-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reproductive Biomedicine Online<\/a>. That means that each year, if just one embryo is created during each IVF cycle (the average is seven), at least 80% \u2014 at least two million \u2014 of the human beings created through IVF either die during the process, are frozen indefinitely, or are destroyed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/worldpopulationreview.com\/country-rankings\/abortion-rates-by-country\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>, there are 73 million induced abortions each year around the world and 29% of all pregnancies end in induced abortion. This means that when comparing rates \u2014 human beings are being destroyed by IVF at a higher rate than they are by abortion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contemporaryobgyn.net\/view\/sart-data-indicates-rise-in-ivf-use-in-2022\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">389,993 IVF cycles in the U.S. in 2022, compared to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/ss\/ss7307a1.htm#:~:text=Among%2047%20reporting%20areas%20with%20data%20each%20year,ratio%20was%20199%20abortions%20per%201%2C000%20live%20births.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC\u2019s report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 609,360 abortions. If every cycle produced eight children, then there were 3,119,944 embryonic human persons created.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a huge game of trial and error that takes place with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/rmanetwork.com\/blog\/number-of-eggs-good-ivf-in-vitro-fertilization\/#:~:text=As%20a%20rule%20of%20thumb%2C%20however%2C%20having%20about,a%20woman%20a%2065%20percent%20chance%20of%20pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">millions of embryonic human beings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even the \u201cbest prognosis\u201d patients \u2014 those under 35 years of age \u2014 have an average of two egg retrieval cycles, and those over age 40 can undergo up to nine. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rmanetwork.com\/blog\/number-of-eggs-good-ivf-in-vitro-fertilization\/#:~:text=As%20a%20rule%20of%20thumb%2C%20however%2C%20having%20about,a%20woman%20a%2065%20percent%20chance%20of%20pregnancy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If 10 eggs are retrieved<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then about eight of them will become embryos upon fertilization. Just two retrieval cycles create 16 persons who won\u2019t all survive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CzFuNYHIEs0?si=JPLYm5JLMzhyL5TX\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embryos are also often tested for \u201cviability\u201d to determine which are worth transferring to the woman\u2019s uterus (or for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnyfertility.com\/gender-selection\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex selection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> purposes). Here\u2019s the issue with testing for \u201cviability\u201d: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1TWatDx3-YUdJwSJU68vWsErPvR5SC3Rb\/view?ths=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Craig Turczynski<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s research shows that embryos who appear abnormal often result in chromosomally \u201cnormal\u201d babies, and vice versa; Dr. Rubal seconded these findings, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_l2Z12OcAzQ\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating<\/span><\/a> that<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that it\u2019s possible to biopsy the wrong area of chromosomes in an embryo and be incorrect about a diagnosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, even diagnoses that are <strong>not<\/strong> actually \u201cincompatible with life\u201d (such as those with Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, or Turner\u2019s syndrome) are automatically deemed \u201cnon-transferrable,\u201d regardless. And if these embryonic persons are fortunate enough to be deemed \u201ctransferable,\u201d then they run the risk of being \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thembeforeus.com\/the-sacrificing-of-excess-children-to-fulfill-adult-desires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">selectively reduced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d if further imperfections are found or if \u201ctoo many\u201d children implant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Did God &#8216;give us&#8217; IVF with the intent that we would use it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><b>Senator Marshall<\/b><b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/03\/16\/1238966404\/how-ivf-is-complicating-republicans-abortion-messaging\"><b>further stated<\/b><\/a><b> that he is \u201cabsolutely certain that in vitro fertilization is a great thing, that God has given us this technology and we should use it.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The argument that \u201cif God wasn\u2019t okay with IVF, He wouldn\u2019t allow it\u201d is brought up often, but this faulty argument can be made for numerous non-ideal scenarios. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If God didn&#8217;t want me to gamble, why did he give me the ability to make money and allow casinos to exist?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If God didn\u2019t want me to be an alcoholic, why did he give us the ability to make alcohol?&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If men weren\u2019t supposed to kill each other, war wouldn\u2019t exist.&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;If God didn&#8217;t want her to conceive out of rape, she wouldn&#8217;t have been raped.&#8221; <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because God brings good out of non-ideal situations <strong><em>doesn&#8217;t mean that He condones the acts leading up to them<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How we choose to abuse things as humans has nothing to do with God. Just because we want something and can make it happen by means of technology or money doesn\u2019t automatically make the act morally correct or justifiable because \u201cGod allowed it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though God commanded humankind to \u201cbe fruitful and multiply,\u201d this command is surely not a license from the Creator allowing us to create children by any possible means. Husband and wife, in their reflection of Christ and the Church, reflect the love of Christ for His creation, and God doesn\u2019t treat any of us as disposable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One man <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@charliemcgann\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI was conceived through IVF; I am fully against it. I was conceived alongside eight of my siblings. I\u2019m the only survivor.\u201d How many of his siblings may have been deemed \u201cnonviable\u201d when they actually had a chance of making it? How many of his siblings&#8217; lives were treated as expendable and lost to any number of unnatural IVF protocols? How does being the only survivor among his siblings impact his psychological well-being?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though it&#8217;s considered standard medical practice, physicians are called to heal, to \u201cdo no harm,\u201d and to uphold the innate worth and dignity of every human being. IVF is not healing, nor does it honor the worth and dignity of embryonic persons. IVF <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.illumefertility.com\/fertility-blog\/what-medications-used-during-ivf-cycle\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medications<\/span><\/a> and procedures expose women<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0to unnecessary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/familyfertility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-Side-Effects-of-Gonadotropins-20180526.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">side\u00a0<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/familyfertility.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/3-Side-Effects-of-Gonadotropins-20180526.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">effects<\/a>\u00a0while<\/span>\u00a0leaving their underlying fertility conditions unhealed. IVF\u2019s practitioners pre-perceive every single human being created in their laboratories as potentially disposable. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IVF, simply put, is human experimentation \u2014 not medicine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t need <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/02\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-expands-access-to-in-vitro-fertilization-ivf\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better access to IVF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. What we need is to stop pretending that IVF is a child-honoring procedure just because it enables people to have children.
