Disability rights advocates are expressing concern, warning that the decision leaves vulnerable individuals unprotected under the proposed law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amendment, which had the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/assisted-suicide-committee-rejects-amendment-protecting-people-with-downs-syndrome-mp-tries-to-censor-backlash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">backing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 50 advocacy organizations, including Down Syndrome UK and Down\u2019s Syndrome Scotland, sought to ensure that people with Down syndrome were not coerced into ending their lives. Under the bill\u2019s current form, doctors would be permitted to use their \u201cprofessional judgment\u201d to raise the topic of assisted suicide, including proactively suggesting the option to patients \u2014 even if a patient had not shown any indication they were considering it. This provision has raised fears that vulnerable individuals could be subtly encouraged toward suicide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee has consistently rejected proposed safeguards. In addition to the Down syndrome amendment, the committee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/assisted-suicide-committee-rejects-amendment-protecting-people-with-downs-syndrome-mp-tries-to-censor-backlash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">also voted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against protections for people with autism, learning disabilities, and minors aged 16 and 17.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MP Danny Kruger, a principal opponent of the bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/assisted-suicide-committee-rejects-amendment-protecting-people-with-downs-syndrome-mp-tries-to-censor-backlash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that people with disabilities are particularly vulnerable under assisted suicide laws, emphasizing that \u201cthere is already a fundamental assumption that the lives of people with Down syndrome \u2018are worth less than others.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-actress-disability-assisted-suicide-documentary\/\"><em>UK actress and disability advocate rails against assisted suicide with new documentary<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Leadbeater Bill seeks to legalize assisted suicide for terminally ill adults with six months or less to live, provided certain criteria are met, including mental competency and approval from multiple doctors. However, as Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-parliament-vote-assisted-suicide-bill-safeguards\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, safeguards in similar laws in other countries have been eroded over time, expanding eligibility to those with mental illnesses or non-terminal conditions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/15XNBFf33W8?si=bLMSY_LB470_34UT\" width=\"650\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill passed its first vote in Parliament in December, with 330 MPs in favor and 274 against, following five hours of debate. While supporters hailed the vote as a &#8220;historic step,&#8221; the bill now faces intense scrutiny as more than 200 amendments are reviewed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MP Kit Malthouse, a supporter of the bill, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/assisted-dying-panel-rejects-downs-syndrome-safeguard\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the committee&#8217;s rejection of the amendments. He asked if \u201cmeasures\u201d could be taken against those who \u201cmisrepresent\u201d the committee\u2019s decision on social media. He was informed that public statements about the committee&#8217;s decisions were outside its jurisdiction. MP Kruger responded, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/spuc.org.uk\/assisted-suicide-committee-rejects-amendment-protecting-people-with-downs-syndrome-mp-tries-to-censor-backlash\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIt is not the job of this committee to police social media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lynn Murray, spokeswoman for Don\u2019t Screen Us Out, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christian.org.uk\/news\/mp-censor-criticism-of-assisted-suicide-bill-committee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MP Malthouse\u2019s statements \u201cdisturbing\u201d and said he \u201cappeared to be threatening organizations representing people with Down Syndrome simply for criticizing the committee\u2019s decision. We will not be silenced in our desire to protect the vulnerable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee\u2019s actions have prompted further concerns about the potential for coercion in discussions around assisted suicide. Dr. Rachel Clarke, a palliative care doctor, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/assisted-suicide-bill-committee-allows-doctors-to-bring-up-assisted-suicide-unprompted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that even <em>asking<\/em> a vulnerable patient about assisted suicide could create unintended pressure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She explained, \u201cIf, for instance, you say to a vulnerable patient who has just been told they have a diagnosis of terminal cancer, \u2018Have you thought about assisted dying?\u2019, I would suggest that stating it broadly like that is a form of pressure and that you are potentially unintentionally coercing that patient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catherine Robinson, a spokesperson for Right to Life UK, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/assisted-suicide-bill-committee-allows-doctors-to-bring-up-assisted-suicide-unprompted\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">raised concerns<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the pressure that may be placed on terminally ill patients in the context of the NHS system, saying, \u201cGiven the state of the NHS, the pressure on beds, and the cost of treating terminally ill people, it is not difficult to imagine conversations in which a doctor raises the prospect of assisted suicide based on their \u2018professional judgment.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued, \u201cMany patients, used to accepting a doctor\u2019s recommendations, may feel they are being encouraged to die even if assisted suicide is only presented as one of a number of options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bill will now undergo further scrutiny, with MPs reviewing over 200 amendments before it moves to a final vote in both Houses of Parliament.
