{"id":327043,"date":"2025-03-04T08:45:32","date_gmt":"2025-03-04T14:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=327043"},"modified":"2025-03-04T07:11:07","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T13:11:07","slug":"5-reasons-midwifery-care-matter-pro-lifers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/5-reasons-midwifery-care-matter-pro-lifers\/","title":{"rendered":"5 reasons why midwifery care should matter to pro-lifers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A startup midwifery clinic in Berkeley, California, recently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fiercehealthcare.com\/providers\/mille-pockets-12m-expand-midwife-led-maternity-care-and-open-new-clinics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">received<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $12 million in funding from venture capitalists and announced plans to open two more clinics this year. This is an incredibly positive move \u2014 but some may ask, &#8220;Aren\u2019t the method of birth (vaginal delivery vs. Cesarean section, aka C-section, delivery) and the type of healthcare provider (midwife vs. OB\/GYN) unimportant as long as the baby is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">born<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arguably, the method of birth and the type of healthcare provider who assists with it matter <em>very much<\/em>, especially to pro-lifers. Here\u2019s why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. C-section rates are at an all-time high, and most first-time moms who have one go on to have another.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/fastats\/delivery.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CDC), 1 in 3 births (32.1%) were done via Cesarean section. Of note, this number is fully <em>three times higher<\/em> than the World Health Organization\u2019s recommendation that C-sections comprise no more than 1 in 10 births.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C-sections among first-time mothers were at an <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all-time high<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that year, constituting 22.4% of all first births. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thebump.com\/news\/c-sections-on-the-rise\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Bump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> summarized succinctly, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because 4 out of 5 women who have a first-time c-section will go on to have another, the increase in this first-time rate means c-section rates overall are likely to increase in the future.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/vbac\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vaginal birth after Cesarean<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VBAC) is on the rise in the United States, but is not yet the norm. At present, many women who have one Cesarean will go on to have another, and each one is a major abdominal surgery with short and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.center4research.org\/c-section-birth-health-risks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term risks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for mother and baby.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Timothy J. Rafael, MD, commented to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.romper.com\/pregnancy\/how-many-c-sections-can-you-have#:~:text=%E2%80%9CMost%20women%20can%20have%20two%20to%20three%20C-sections,of%20complication%20for%20the%20baby%20are%20very%20small.%E2%80%9D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Romper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Cesarean is a major abdominal operation. Most women can have two to three C-sections uneventfully; however, even after the first C-section I\u2019ve seen patients have complications in a second pregnancy.\u201d OB\/GYN Dr. Barbara McLaren, MD, explained to Romper that with each C-section comes additional scar tissue, and \u201cThe surgery is also technically difficult to perform the more scar tissue that is present.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. C-sections can become an indirect, unintended form of birth control.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">C-section births, especially to first-time mothers, can de facto become an unintended form of birth control, as doctors will caution women about the risks of conceiving again after several C-sections. Dr. Rafael summed up, \u201cThe best practice is to try and avoid the first C-section.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another factor to consider regarding C-sections and family size is related to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-overcome-postpartum-disorders-thrive-mothers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postpartum mood and anxiety disorders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (PMADs). PMADs include postpartum depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and psychosis. Many factors can contribute to the development of one or more PMADs, but a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9025262\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particular one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an unplanned or emergency C-section. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Postpartum anxiety and depression brought on by PTSD from an emergency C-section understandably lead many mothers to think, \u201cWhy would I ever risk going through that again?\u201d or \u201cI can\u2019t do that again.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/clinic-improve-birth-outcomes-black-mothers\/\"><em>Pro-life doula creates clinic to improve birth outcomes for Black mothers<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. Midwives can drive down C-section rates.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how do we drive down C-section rates so that that first domino to limit family size doesn\u2019t fall? Midwives. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31599830\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midwifery care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is proven to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/birt.12405\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drive down C-section rates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, particularly for low-risk and moderate-risk women, and to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chcf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/ListeningMothersCAFullSurveyReport2018.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improve women\u2019s experiences <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of labor and birth. This is a known fact in other countries, where integration of midwives within and outside of hospital systems is long standing practice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anu Sharma, founder and CEO of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.millieclinic.com\/blog\/why-we-built-millie\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the California midwifery-led maternity clinic startup that\u2019s already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2025\/02\/26\/maternity-clinic-millie-nabs-12m-series-a-from-an-all-star-all-female-class-of-vcs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fundraised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $19 million total, cited the discrepancy between maternal care in the United States vs. elsewhere, saying, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you look at Canada, the U.K., France, Germany, the Nordic countries, front-line care from the community is provided by midwives and OB-GYNs really get involved when more care is needed. We&#8217;ve sort of done it backwards here in the U.S.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued, \u201cFor low- to moderate-risk pregnancies, and even for higher-risk pregnancies, a big portion of maternity care can be provided by midwives and, hands down, it creates better outcomes with lower rates of C-sections. They are the right care provider\u2014that&#8217;s their training and they&#8217;re very skilled at promoting natural vaginal birth.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She summed up, \u201c[Midwives] practice medicine very differently. They&#8217;re not proceduralists, they&#8217;re basically designed to care for people going through this journey, which can require a level of clinical care, but doesn&#8217;t always require a level of medicalization that OB-GYNs bring to the problem.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Millie\u2019s flagship clinic, which opened in 2022, reported 30% lower C-section rates and 67% lower preterm birth rates than the national average.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>4. Pregnancy is not a disease, and midwifery care recognizes this.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The implication behind dehumanizing pro-abortion terminology that calls preborn babies \u201cparasites\u201d and \u201cleeches\u201d is the idea that pregnancy is pathological. On the contrary, pregnancy is not a disease but a natural biological process (and even has some surprising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/health-benefits-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the woman) necessary for the continuation of the human race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Undeniably, pregnancy leads to marked changes in the woman\u2019s body, including increased blood volume, changes in her heart rate and breathing pattern, and many more. And yet, the female body was beautifully designed to accommodate these changes. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midwifery care grasps that pregnancy is a normal and natural part of being a woman, not a disease to be feared, and supports that reality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. Midwifery care helps counteract the rise in maternity care deserts.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s another reason midwifery care should matter to every pro-lifer. Contrary to popular pro-abortion slogans, pro-lifers care about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">both<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mother and baby, and that care doesn\u2019t end after a woman rules out abortion. The sad reality is that many women who choose to continue their pregnancies don\u2019t have access to the prenatal care they need and deserve.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Midwives can help solve the maternity care crisis in America, which has led to the classification of 35% of American counties as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/maternity-care-deserts-report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maternity care deserts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (an area without birthing facilities or obstetric providers), according to a 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.marchofdimes.org\/about\/news\/march-dimes-2024-maternity-care-deserts-report-reveals-millions-families-unable-to\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">March of Dimes report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In addition to an ongoing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Z7RsPsjPKKYiStMQ6TiUzhXB2wYq7fj_yEYNLbefuNA\/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.swhumns2j6oa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shortage of OB\/GYNs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in just two years, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obstetrics units closed across the United States. Women in maternity care deserts receive poorer prenatal care and experience more gestational hypertension (high blood pressure during pregnancy) and preterm birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Overall, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealthfund.org\/publications\/issue-briefs\/2023\/may\/expanding-role-midwives-address-maternal-health-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demand<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for midwifery care is high, and 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/newsroom\/press-releases\/hhs-improve-maternal-health-outcomes-new-cms-care-model-expands-access-services-other-proven\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">changes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services\u2019 payment model prioritize increased access to doulas and midwives.
