{"id":326957,"date":"2025-03-01T11:00:40","date_gmt":"2025-03-01T17:00:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=326957"},"modified":"2025-02-28T23:59:14","modified_gmt":"2025-03-01T05:59:14","slug":"preemie-triplets-27-weeks-celebrate-first-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/preemie-triplets-27-weeks-celebrate-first-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"Preemie triplets born at 27 weeks celebrate first birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/premmie-triplets-celebrate-first-birthday-after-being-born-at-just-27-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) A set of triplet boys from Auckland born at just 27 weeks gestation and each weighing less than a kilogram celebrated their first birthdays after they were born less than a year after their parents became a couple.<\/p>\n<p>The boys\u2019 mum, Maria Munkowits,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/aucklands-ward-triplets-turn-one-maria-munkowits-and-ollie-ward-on-life-as-parents-of-three\/XUDEXQV75BGW7AJLAPZVIPZSQE\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9COne%20in%2010%2C000%E2%80%B3%2C%20the%20Auckland%20mum%20says%20of%20the%20statistical%20chance%20her%20and%20partner%20Ollie%20Ward%20would%20conceive%20triplets%20naturally.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that she and the boys\u2019 father, Ollie Ward, had a \u201cone in 10,000\u201d chance of spontaneously conceiving their triplets, who made Maria a first-time mother at 38.<\/p>\n<p>Her boys, Casey, Eli and Ari, were born by caesarean section one minute apart. At just 27 weeks and three days, their arrival came a month before Maria and Ollie\u2019s one-year anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny how time works, because some things just feel like there\u2019s been a lifetime\u201d, Maria\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/aucklands-ward-triplets-turn-one-maria-munkowits-and-ollie-ward-on-life-as-parents-of-three\/XUDEXQV75BGW7AJLAPZVIPZSQE\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt%E2%80%99s%20funny%20how,years%2C%20%E2%80%9Cit%E2%80%99s%20crazy.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cAnd then, it\u2019s crazy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The premature babies are making good progress<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At birth, the three tiny boys weighed between 750 grams and 900 grams and they spent 115 days in hospital before going home with their parents just before Christmas. By then, they had grown to between 3.9 kilograms and 4.7 kilograms.<\/p>\n<p>Now, one year after their births, they all weigh around 7-8 kilograms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re still little, and they look like the tiniest one-year-olds ever\u201d, their mother said. \u201cBut they\u2019re all good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The triplets are meeting their milestones, which are checked based on their \u201ccorrected age\u201d of nine months, as this accounts for their premature arrival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll their checks \u2013 hearing, eyes, brain \u2013 everything was totally fine\u201d, Maria said.<\/p>\n<p>Although the babies\u2019 lungs were \u201ca little bit compromised\u201d due to their prematurity, they have been able to avoid any significant illnesses so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had colds and little viruses here and there, but nothing major or scary\u201d, she said. &#8220;So that\u2019s been really lucky\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/healthy-baby-girl-born-plane-belgium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Healthy baby girl born on plane bound for Belgium: \u2018It was magical\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Life with three babies can be a lot of work<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of nappies\u201d, Maria said when reflecting on daily life with the triplets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven having two adults, three babies is a lot. But if it\u2019s just me with all three of them, I feel like I need to be an octopus \u2013 literally, you need more pairs of hands\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The couple have been helped by funding from the New Zealand government for parents of multiples, which has enabled them to employ a nanny three days a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s fantastic and has helped us so much\u201d, Maria said. \u201cIt also means I can sneak out and teach a yoga class here and there, and do my old life stuff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The three boys are fraternal triplets and have different personalities in addition to looking different from each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEli, he\u2019s like the big, gentle giant\u201d, she said. \u201cSuper friendly, loves people. Casey, he\u2019s a little bit more cautious, a little bit shy, but a real observer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd then Ari is kind of like the wild child. He gets the look in his eye. Smallest, but mightiest\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Maria said that she has been learning to be present in the moment as a mother.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can get caught up in, \u2018Are they gaining enough weight? What are they eating? How many nappies do I need to buy?\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019m trying to remind myself to actually enjoy them, and enjoy them individually as well as together. Just make that a priority, rather than the chores and the admin of baby stuff\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Although wary of advising other new parents, Maria said \u201cListen to your intuition and do whatever works best for you and your family. Nobody\u2019s the same, and everyone will have a different experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cCongratulations to Maria and Ollie on welcoming their three boys.
