The law passed despite the fact that the Italian parliament has not issued national legislation to undo the current prohibition on euthanasia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuscany\u2019s law, which passed by a regional government vote of 27-13, allows citizens to commit assisted suicide if the committee assigned to review euthanasia cases decides that the following <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cne.news\/article\/4624-tuscany-opposes-meloni-by-legalising-assisted-death\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conditions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are met: \u201cincurable illness, unbearable suffering, dependence on medical equipment, and free and conscious choice of the patient.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The committee which will approve assisted suicide requests \u201cconsists of a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">palliative doctor, a psychiatrist, an anesthetist, a psychologist, a general practitioner and a nurse,\u201d CNE News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cne.news\/article\/4624-tuscany-opposes-meloni-by-legalising-assisted-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/australian-state-expand-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Australian state moves to expand assisted suicide laws<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/first-italy-tuscany-approves-right-to-die-law-2025-02-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Tuscany\u2019s law requires the committee to review applications for assisted suicide within 30 days and provide the necessary drugs and medical staff for the assisted suicide within 10 days of approval. The law is framed as a means to help patients by giving them immediate relief,\u00a0 but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-1-5-six-months-survive-years\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> out of countries with broader access to euthanasia show that sometimes patients rush for approval for euthanasia after receiving a fatal diagnosis, only to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/man-assisted-suicide-misdiagnosed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learn<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that the diagnosis was wrong and that they actually had more time to live than expected.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardinal Augusto Paolo Lojudice, president of Tuscany\u2019s bishops\u2019 conference called the law \u201cnot an achievement, but a defeat for everyone, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.osvnews.com\/tuscan-bishop-laments-passage-of-right-to-die-law-in-italy-calls-it-a-defeat-for-everyone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OSV News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Italian Bishops\u2019 Conference has issued a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vaticannews.va\/en\/church\/news\/2025-02\/italian-bishops-assisted-suicide-law-human-life.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statement<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticizing Tuscany\u2019s law, the practice of assisted suicide, and the fact that the government is prioritizing death over palliative care, while the Church has done much to provide healthcare for the sick and elderly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe express concern for recent regional initiatives on the subject of end-of-life. The first task of the civil community and the health system is to assist and care, not to hasten death\u2026Procuring death, directly or through medically assisted suicide, radically contrasts with the value of the person, with the purposes of the State and with the medical profession itself,\u201d the bishops\u2019 statement reads, according to Vatican News.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Euthanasia is still a crime in Italy, prohibited in the Italian Criminal Code. In 2019, the Italian Constitutional Court <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/italy-decriminalizes-assisted-suicide-right-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ruled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that euthanasia is not a crime if committed by will of the patient because of a chronic, life-threatening condition or intolerable pain.
