Illinois’ recently-released budget for 2026 includes $24 million for “reproductive health initiatives” that involve expanding abortion in the state.<\/p>\n

According to My Stateline<\/a>, the funding includes two million dollars in grant funds for freestanding reproductive healthcare clinics (abortion facilities), five million for abortion training, and four million for \u201cbirth equity\u201d initiatives, which are defined as efforts that offer \u201cassurance of the conditions of optimal births\u00a0for all people with a willingness to address racial and social inequities in a sustained effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

The funding has been praised by abortion supporters, who say that state-funded abortion is important because so many other states have laws protecting preborn children.<\/p>\n

“I think that putting funding into health care in all aspects is extraordinarily important,” State Rep. Amy Briel said<\/a>, speaking specifically of the abortion funding. “As a legislator, I would like to see that level of funding continue.\u201d<\/p>\n
