{"id":326810,"date":"2025-02-24T11:41:38","date_gmt":"2025-02-24T17:41:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=326810"},"modified":"2025-02-24T07:21:17","modified_gmt":"2025-02-24T13:21:17","slug":"study-hormonal-contraceptives-double-heart-stroke-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-hormonal-contraceptives-double-heart-stroke-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"New study shows double heart attack and stroke risks among healthy young contraceptive users"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Swedish <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/388\/bmj-2024-082801\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published on February 12, 2025, in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">British Medical Journal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">current hormonal contraceptive use doubled \u2014 and even <em>tripled<\/em> \u2014 heart attack and stroke risk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When researchers reviewed 25 years\u2019 worth of medical records (1996-2021) from over 2,000,000 women, they found that the most popular forms of hormonal contraception <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">except<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the progestin-only (Levonorgestrel-IUD or LNG-IUD) raised ischemic stroke risk, and all but the LNG-IUD and the arm patch raised heart attack (myocardial infarction) risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ischemic (caused by a blood clot or other blockage in the brain) stroke risk was highest in arm patch users, with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">triple<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the rates compared to women who did not use hormonal contraception. Vaginal ring and oral combined contraceptive (containing both estrogen and progestin) users had more than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">twice<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the stroke risk of non-users. Progestin-only pill users had lower risk than the other methods, but stroke rates were still significantly higher than in non-users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral contraceptive users also had twice the heart attack risk compared to women who didn\u2019t use hormonal birth control. Vaginal ring users had triple the heart attack risk. Progestin-only pill users were also at higher risk than non-users.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actual risk of experiencing a stroke or heart attack remains low\u2026<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s put the concept of double or triple the risk into context. As an example, the researchers noted that for oral contraceptive users, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[The increased risks] equate to approximately one extra ischemic stroke for every 4760 women using combined oral contraceptives for one year and one extra myocardial infarction for every 10,000 women per year of use compared with no users.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many wonder, and various commentaries ask in so many words, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why get excited about <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such small increases in risk? <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Medscape <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/stroke-mi-risk-and-contraceptives-latest-findings-2025a10003s5?ecd=WNL_trdalrt_pos1_250216_etid7235223&amp;uac=163444FR&amp;impID=7235223\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commentary<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went so far as to explicitly proclaim, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women should not stop using contraception based on the findings.\u201d The headline of a LiveScience<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/health\/hormonal-birth-control-may-double-risk-of-stroke-study-finds-but-dont-panic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">writeup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the BMJ study read, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal birth control may double risk of stroke, study finds \u2014 but don&#8217;t panic.\u201d<\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026But the sheer number of hormonal contraceptive users translates to thousands of extra strokes and heart attacks each year<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rub is that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">248 million<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> women worldwide use hormonal contraception. Calculating based on oral contraceptive usage <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/products\/databriefs\/db327.htm#:~:text=Data%20from%20the%202015%E2%80%932017,States%20were%20currently%20using%20contraception.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), between 2015 and 2017, over 9 million reproductive-aged American women were on combined contraceptive pills alone. Over 2 million women were using the contraceptive arm patch, vaginal ring, or Depo-Provera arm injection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust\u201d one extra ischemic stroke for every 4,760 women taking the pill for 12 months would translate to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1,890<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> contraceptive-caused ischemic strokes that year. And while risk does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">appear to increase with duration of use (risk doesn\u2019t go up for every additional year you\u2019re on hormonal contraception), the fact remains that many women are exposed to these same risks year after year, because contraceptives are often used for years on end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, while side effects are bound to occur with any medication, those risks are outweighed or judged acceptable for the greater goal of improving symptoms or curing a disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But hormonal contraception is often taken for pregnancy prevention by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> young women. When her birth control causes a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-teen-stroke-coma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stroke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or heart attack or other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tennessee-teen-blood-clot-birth-control-pills\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serious complication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> like a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dies-blood-clot-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-nearly-ended-life-warned\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthy<\/span><\/i><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young woman is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made ill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by her contraceptive.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/adverse-outcomes-hormonal-contraception-experts\/\"><em>\u2018No adverse outcomes\u2019 of hormonal contraception use? Not so fast, says expert panel<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is taking hormonal contraceptives <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safer<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than being pregnant or postpartum?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hormonal birth control apologists<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-safer-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">routinely point out<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hat pregnancy and the early postpartum period bring heightened risk of blood clots, equivalent to or slightly higher than risk from hormonal contraceptives. Similarly, in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.medscape.com\/viewarticle\/stroke-mi-risk-and-contraceptives-latest-findings-2025a10003s5?ecd=WNL_trdalrt_pos1_250216_etid7235223&amp;uac=163444FR&amp;impID=7235223\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medscape<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> writeup of the BMJ study, a UK-based medical school professor was quoted as saying, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risk of stroke and heart attack in pregnancy and postnatal period is significantly higher than the risks reported in this study for contraceptives.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News previously put <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-safer-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increased blood clot risk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during pregnancy and postpartum vs. on hormonal contraceptives in context at length, explaining why it\u2019s an apples to oranges comparison. The same logic holds for comparing stroke and heart attack risk in hormonal contraceptive users to pregnant and postpartum women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2020\/10\/27\/heart-attacks-linked-to-pregnancy-on-the-rise-most-often-in-women-30-and-older\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heart attacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and strokes <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occur in healthy pregnant and postpartum women, though they <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8133785\/#:~:text=Additionally%2C%20maternal%20heart%20disease%20complicates,on%20the%20underlying%20cardiac%20condition.&amp;text=Over%2050%25%20of%20maternal%20deaths%20occur%20post%2Dpartum.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primarily occur<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in pregnant or postpartum women who are older, smoke, and\/or have preexisting conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But consider that the average woman, who bears approximately two children, will experience higher clot risk for roughly two years, counting 2x 40 weeks of pregnancy plus 2x six weeks postpartum. By contrast, the average woman takes hormonal contraception off and on for much of her adult life, spanning decades of exposure to blood clot, heart attack, and stroke risk, to name a few. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a 2021 Guttmacher<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/fact-sheet\/contraceptive-use-united-states\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fact sheet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in order to achieve her desired family size, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a sexually active woman must use contraceptives for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">roughly three decades<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (emphasis added).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is hormonal birth control indispensable for the treatment of reproductive health issues?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, while pregnancy has some surprising <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/health-benefits-of-pregnancy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health benefits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hormonal contraception cannot resolve reproductive health issues; it can only serve as a sort of Band-Aid for them. Unfortunately, this distinction is rarely made in commentaries on studies of the risks of hormonal contraception. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/\/www.oliversegal.com\/__;!!Ivohdkk!lOG8G6Sa50HBJUYoSikc67QZ1zQ3eucAy8MwM_Htu6ObMU7hWFWLMYy97Rj6ZFaIMhM2EWAlZpGEh4aU_ArXVvEZfq48pceo$\">Dr Oliver Segal<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a British cardiologist and electrophysiologist, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/sexual-health\/a63840332\/hormonal-contraception-heart-attacks-study\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women\u2019s Health UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThe small increased risk of stroke or heart attack must be weighed against the benefits of\u00a0 hormonal contraception, including pregnancy prevention, menstrual cycle regulation and treatment of conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/g30294185\/6-symptoms-of-polycystic-ovarian-syndrome\/\">polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/uk\/health\/conditions\/a46501399\/women-with-endometriosis-are-being-medically-gaslit\/\">endometriosis<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> get help for reproductive issues without risking heart attacks and strokes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commentaries like the Medscape and Women\u2019s Health UK articles imply that hormonal contraception is a panacea for virtually any women\u2019s health condition, and indeed it\u2019s been framed that way for decades. But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.factsaboutfertility.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">healthcare providers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trained in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/find-a-doctor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">restorative reproductive medicine (RRM)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seek to address the root causes of hormonal and other reproductive health disorders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather than masking symptoms with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/irregular-period-birth-control-pill-regulating-cycle-fertility-awareness-methods-07212018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal contraception<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">which may contribute to, for example, the average 8-12 year delay between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/endometriosis-teens\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endometriosis symptom onset and diagnosis<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they recognize that the menstrual cycle is a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/cycle-health-for-teen-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fifth vital sign<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of health. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-reasons-reproductive-cycle-easier-empowering-think\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cycle charting<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serves as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-bodys-cycles-empowers-women-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">starting point<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for a thorough workup that may involve blood draws, ultrasounds, and more to get to the source and resolve underlying issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women deserve family planning options and reproductive health solutions that don\u2019t put their health at risk. Hormonal birth control cannot offer them that.
