{"id":326502,"date":"2025-02-18T16:51:52","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T22:51:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=326502"},"modified":"2025-02-17T02:39:34","modified_gmt":"2025-02-17T08:39:34","slug":"copper-iud-hormone-free-side-effect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/copper-iud-hormone-free-side-effect\/","title":{"rendered":"The Copper IUD: When hormone-free doesn\u2019t mean side effect-free"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even Cosmopolitan <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cosmopolitan.com\/health-fitness\/a63536336\/post-birth-control-syndrome\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has joined the growing chorus of media voices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2024\/08\/95570\/\">Washington Post and the New York Times<\/a> \u2014 in admitting that women are increasingly ditching hormonal birth control, though they can&#8217;t seem to agree on the reasons why. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what are they turning to for family planning instead?<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As women ditch the pill, many are turning to LARC<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A growing but overall relatively small <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9171018\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">percentage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women are relying on fertility awareness methods. But, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8096680\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 1999\u20132016) and the National Survey for Family Growth (NSFG, 2006-2017), even as hormonal birth control use is declining, uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is on the rise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not by accident. For years, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vitalsigns\/pdf\/2015-04-vitalsigns.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has urged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> primary care doctors, pediatricians, and OB\/GYNs to promote long-acting, \u201cset it and forget it\u201d LARC, including IUDs and the arm implant. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), the professional organization of OB\/GYNs, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/committee-opinion\/articles\/2018\/05\/adolescents-and-long-acting-reversible-contraception-implants-and-intrauterine-devices\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emphasizes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> LARC as a cornerstone of teen pregnancy prevention.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overturn of Roe v. Wade kicked LARC advocacy into high gear<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The push to get women on LARC has only accelerated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the wake of the overturning of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, with ready access to abortion decreased in some states. Primary care doctors in particular were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9849600\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">encouraged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to \u201cadd contraception to your health maintenance template, optimize contraception prescriptions to minimize contraceptive failure&#8230; [and] sign up for long-acting reversible contraceptive training.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By the data, this push has been relatively successful. A December 2023 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/nchs\/data\/nhsr\/nhsr195.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Health Statistics Report<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the CDC reported that \u201cThe percentage of women who had ever used the IUD in 2015\u20132019 (21.4%) was almost three times the percentage in 2006\u20132010 (7.7%).\u201d Simultaneously, a 2022 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8096680\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trends in Oral Contraceptive and Intrauterine Device Use among Reproductive-aged Women in the US from 1999 to 2017,\u201d found that from 2006-2017, oral contraceptive use decreased 4.4% annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some women believe the copper IUD is more natural, safer than hormonal contraception<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News has reported extensively on the significant health concerns associated with <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birth control use, and these concerns generally extend to the Levonorgestrel IUD (LNG-IUD), also known as the hormonal IUD. Women who are ready to ditch any and all forms of hormonal contraception may turn instead to the copper IUD, known by the brand name Paragard, believing that hormone-free means side effect-free.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is it true that hormone-free means the copper IUD is more natural, and therefore safer? Here are the copper IUD-specific side effects women should know about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>How does the copper IUD prevent pregnancy?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hormonal IUD is a small T-shaped plastic device wrapped in a copper coil that continuously releases copper into the uterus. According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paragard.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/PARAGARD-PI.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">full prescribing information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cParagard works by preventing sperm from reaching the egg, preventing sperm from fertilizing the egg, or possibly preventing attachment (implantation) in the uterus. Paragard does not stop your ovaries from making an egg (ovulating) each month.\u201d They\u2019re considered effective for up to 10 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>General IUD side effects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Risks associated with either type of IUD include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/iuds-insertion-pain-perforation-risk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perforation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (puncture or penetration) of the uterus or a nearby organ by the IUD, which may cause severe bleeding<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accidental expulsion, where the IUD falls out<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infection\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These side effects are rare, but an FDA-funded<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0140673622000150?dgcid=author\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published in the Lancet in 2022 found that perforation was much more likely to occur than previously assumed. Risks were highest for women who had IUDs placed in the first few months postpartum.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Expulsion risk is also highest for newly postpartum women. In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/greenjournal\/Abstract\/2018\/10000\/Intrauterine_Device_Expulsion_After_Postpartum.14.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 systematic review and meta-analysis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, IUD placement within 10 minutes after birth had a 10% expulsion rate, within 10 minutes to 4 weeks postpartum had a 29.7% expulsion rate, and after 4 weeks had a 1.9% risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, because both LNG- IUDs and copper-IUDs function differently from other types of contraception and are <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> designed to prevent ovulation, they may function as abortifacients in very early pregnancies, as Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/iuds-human-embryos-implantation-facts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously described<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Side effects specific to copper IUDs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Copper IUD users are more likely to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2971735\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> heavier periods, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC2702765\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">painful periods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spotting between periods, and even<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/continuous-bleeding-iud\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continuous bleeding<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and these risks have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6440740\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long been known<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/paragard-copper-iud-breakage-lawsuits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thousands of lawsuits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> alleging internal breakage of the Paragard IUD have been consolidated into multidistrict litigation (MDL) and are set to go to trial in 2025. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paragard users may also be at higher risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8326546\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing bacterial vaginosis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/std\/treatment-guidelines\/bv.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases risk<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of contracting sexually transmitted infections.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can copper IUDs cause copper toxicity?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women with certain health conditions should not have a copper IUD inserted, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/copper-toxicity#causes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Healthline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, because of the possibility of copper poisoning or copper toxicity (buildup of excess copper in the body). These conditions include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/wilsons-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wilson\u2019s disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver disease, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/hepatitis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hepatitis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/symptom\/anemia\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anemia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (low red blood cell count, which may occur as a result of heavy periods from the Paragard), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/common-thyroid-disorders\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thyroid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues, leukemia, lymphoma, and rheumatoid arthritis.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No large-scale research to date has definitively linked copper IUDs to copper toxicity in the general population. And yet <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefemedic.com\/contraception\/we-need-to-talk-about-iuds-and-copper-toxicity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some women<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do<\/span><\/i> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-in\/health\/other\/can-an-iud-give-you-copper-toxicity\/ar-AA1oNffA?ocid=BingNewsVerp\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experience<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> signs of copper toxicity while using the copper IUD, including <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">headaches, fatigue, nausea, depression, irritability, cravings, mood swings, and brain fog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In late 2023, Labbe tragically took her life after experiencing psychosis attributed by both her family and an expert to copper toxicity. Labbe had four copper IUDs inserted in just 8 years, and her psychosis may have been triggered by repeated \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0010782411002447#:~:text=The%20copper%20intrauterine%20device%20is,a%20variety%20of%20harmful%20effects.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">copper bursts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d \u2014 known to occur shortly after copper IUD insertion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bottom line<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As women increasingly abandon hormonal contraception, particularly the pill, they deserve to be informed of the risks that copper IUDs may pose to their health.
