The proposed changes include permitting at-home DIY abortions, removing the requirement for abortions to be done only in medical facilities, and adopting gender-neutral language. While these measures are framed as a response to medical advancements and evolving social norms, they raise significant concerns about women&#8217;s health and safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sweden\u2019s abortion law, introduced in 1974, legalized abortion on demand up to 18 weeks and has remained largely unchanged. In June 2023, the government <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/regeringen.se\/pressmeddelanden\/2023\/06\/barnmorskan-och-medicine-doktorn-inga-maj-andersson-leder-utredningen-om-forandringar-i-abortlagstiftningen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an inquiry led by Inga-Maj Andersson, a registered nurse, midwife, and doctor of medicine, to evaluate potential updates, including the growing prevalence of at-home abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Abortion Act is almost fifty years old and needs to be modernized,\u201d Minister of Health Acko Ankarberg Johansson said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/regeringen.se\/pressmeddelanden\/2025\/02\/sjukvardsministern-tog-emot-forslag-om-forandringar-i-abortlagstiftningen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cNot least, the law needs to be adapted to the medical developments that have occurred, such as the fact that today a greater number of medical abortions are performed that do not require hospital care. The report&#8217;s proposal is a welcome step towards updated legislation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A central recommendation of the inquiry is to allow women to take the abortion pill at home. Currently, the abortion pill regimen \u2014 consisting of mifepristone, which blocks the pregnancy hormone progesterone, and misoprostol, which induces contractions and expels the body of the child \u2014 is administered under medical supervision. This method has become increasingly common in the United States, accounting for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/medication-abortion-accounted-63-all-us-abortions-2023-increase-53-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">63% of abortions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> within the U.S. healthcare system, according to the Guttmacher Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-survivor-struggled-self-worth-god-loved\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Abortion survivor struggled with his self-worth until he realized \u2018how much God loved me\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite claims that at-home abortion is safe, research shows that chemical abortions are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-four-times-dangerous-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times more dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than first-trimester surgical abortions. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(21)00091-3\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research<\/a> carried out by Gynuity, a pro-abortion research institute, found that six percent (6%) of women who take the abortion pill will require care at an emergency room or urgent care facility \u2014 and that is believed to be a low estimate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/not-all-states-abortion-complications-reported\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">underreporting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Without proper medical oversight, complications such as severe hemorrhaging, infection, and incomplete abortion become more likely. The absence of pre-abortion ultrasounds or blood tests also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-abortion-pill-protocol-access-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the risk of undiagnosed ectopic pregnancies, which can be fatal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, many women are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-lied-abortion-pill-pain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unprepared<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the extreme pain and heavy bleeding associated with chemical abortion, leaving them distressed and vulnerable without immediate medical assistance. Expanding access to abortion pills without medical supervision could put more women at risk of serious health complications.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The inquiry also proposes updating the language of Sweden\u2019s abortion law to be gender-neutral, replacing terms like \u201cwoman\u201d with \u201cthe person who is pregnant.\u201d This change, while intended to be inclusive, minimizes the fact that abortion policy primarily affects women and their unique health needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNowadays, it\u2019s possible for someone who is legally male to become pregnant, and they should also have the right to an abortion,\u201d Andersson <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20250204\/sweden-proposes-making-it-easier-to-carry-out-an-abortion-at-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, according to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Local Sweden<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She insisted, \u201cThis does not negatively affect the right to abort for women, it\u2019s still a women\u2019s rights issue.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond these measures, the inquiry suggests clarifying the legal right to abortion and ensuring healthcare providers offer timely access to abortion services.
