Oregon is one of the most radical states in the country on the issue of abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy commitment to standing up for Oregon and Oregon values is unwavering,\u201d Oregon Democratic Governor Tina Kotek <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovTinaKotek\/status\/1882953153102197169\">said<\/a> in a recorded message posted to social media Friday. \u201cI will not back down from a fight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pro-abortion governor, who responded to U.S. President Donald Trump\u2019s November 5 re-election by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortl.org\/2024\/11\/oregons-democratic-governor-tina-kotek-increasing-abortion-pill-stockpile-after-trump-win\/\">increasing <\/a>the state\u2019s stockpile of dangerous abortion pills, then named a series of progressive political priorities, including \u201caccess to reproductive and gender-affirming care.\u201d Abortion is currently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregon.gov\/oha\/ph\/healthypeoplefamilies\/abortionaccess\/pages\/legal-rights-privacy.aspx\">legal<\/a> up to the moment of birth in Oregon, with no gestational limits, mandatory waiting periods, or even parental notification requirements for girls ages 15 and up.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">My commitment to standing up for Oregon and Oregon values is unwavering. And I am staying the course on making progress on issues of top concern to Oregonians. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tyGdhjLoiw\">https:\/\/t.co\/tyGdhjLoiw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Governor Tina Kotek (@GovTinaKotek) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovTinaKotek\/status\/1882953153102197169?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nPro-life Republican state Representative Ed Diehl, who won his re-election bid in November with the support and endorsement of Oregon Right to Life PAC, blasted Gov. Kotek for the comments in his own X post on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In the post, Diehl slammed the governor for interpreting \u201cOregon Values\u201d to \u201cinclude late term abortions,\u201d and reaffirmed his support for \u201cThe Real Oregon Values, and the ones I defend every day in the legislature,\u201d including the \u201cDignity of human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A recent Knights of Columbus-Marist poll <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/newsroom\/press-releases\/new-marist-poll-confirms-7-in-10-americans-want-limits-on-abortion\">found<\/a> that 72% of people polled believe abortion should only be legal through six months of pregnancy at most, and 67% reject a position that would put no limits at all on abortion. The results pit Oregon\u2019s limitless abortion landscape at odds with the perspectives of the majority of Americans.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">For Governor Kotek, &#8220;Oregon Values&#8221; include late term abortions, irreversible &#8216;gender affirming&#8217; procedures on children, men in women&#8217;s sport and safe spaces, extreme climate policies, and harboring violent criminals. Real Diehl (@Real_EdDiehl) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Real_EdDiehl\/status\/1883176919740612742?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nMeanwhile, Kotek\u2019s comments about securing \u201cOregon values\u201d come shortly after her counterpart in Washington State, the newly-elected Democratic Governor Bob Ferguson, signed an executive order shortly after his inauguration directing the Washington State Department of Health to work with medical and abortion providers, along with policy makers, to \u201crecommend strategies for protecting reproductive health care,\u201d KOIN <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koin.com\/news\/washington\/washington-gov-ferguson-signs-executive-orders-addressing-abortion-housing-crisis\/\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I]t is the longstanding public policy of this state to promote access to affordable, high-quality sexual and reproductive health care,\u201d Ferguson\u2019s order states, adding that \u201call people deserve to make their own decisions about their pregnancies, including deciding to end a pregnancy,\u201d and that abortion access \u201cis of paramount importance for individual and public health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is presently legal up to 24 weeks gestation in Washington, or roughly the age of \u201cviability\u201d \u2013 when the unborn baby can survive outside the womb \u2013 but vague exceptions for the \u201clife and health\u201d of the mother make abortion legal in practice up to the moment of birth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eR1Ut4BPbOw?si=Z7a1v_GpUu-KzZkE\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Washington, like Oregon, has seen an increase in women traveling from out of state following the U.S. Supreme Court\u2019s 2022 <em>Dobbs v. Jackson<\/em> decision overturning <em>Roe v Wade<\/em>. A 2024 JAMA study, <a href=\"https:\/\/mynorthwest.com\/local\/washington-has-become-safe-haven-for-people-seeking-abortions-study-finds\/3961362%23:~:text=Washington%2520has%2520become%2520'safe%2520haven,people%2520seeking%2520abortions%252C'%2520study%2520finds&amp;text=A%2520new%2520study%252C%2520published%2520in,occurred%2520after%2520the%2520Dobbs%2520decision.&amp;text=Of%2520the%2520patients%2520the%2520study,%252C%2520and%252013%2525%2520were%2520Asian.\">found<\/a> that Washington experienced a 50% increase in women traveling from out of state for abortions.<\/p>\n<p>In Oregon, the number of women traveling to Oregon from other states for abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortl.org\/2024\/11\/late-term-abortions-more-than-doubled-in-2023-oha-data-shows\/\">rose<\/a> 60% in 2023 compared with the prior year. Including abortions for Oregon residents and women traveling from out of state, overall abortions in Oregon increased 16.2%, and more than two and a half times the number of late-term abortions (abortions performed at or after 23 weeks) took place in 2023 compared to 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In response, pro-life advocates are continuing to promote the availability of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortl.org\/community-resources\/\">life-affirming resources<\/a> and alternatives for abortion-vulnerable moms and families statewide. Pro-life state lawmakers, like Diehl, have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortl.org\/2025\/01\/pro-life-oregon-lawmakers-introduce-life-affirming-bills-as-83rd-legislative-session-begins\/\">introduced<\/a> and are supporting legislation that would, among other things, protect babies who survive abortions as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ortl.org\/2024\/08\/can-the-unborn-feel-pain\/\">pain-capable<\/a> babies 15 weeks gestation and older.<\/p>\n<p>All pro-life legislation, including in states like Idaho and Texas, clearly distinguish between abortions explicitly intended to end an innocent human life and those medical interventions \u2013 like ectopic pregnancy care or miscarriage care \u2013 that are fundamentally necessary to preserve the life of the mother.
