Back in Simpson&#8217;s hometown, officials named a street after him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 23-year-old, who has Down syndrome, attended the event in Iceland with his coach, Kyle Moran, and performed in front of hundreds of people, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wishtv.com\/news\/local-news\/carmels-own-sky-simpson-takes-3-gold-medals-at-ipf-powerlifting-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clinching<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> first place overal<\/span>l for the Special Olympics 205-pound division. His squat and benching also earned gold, along with silver for his deadlift.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not, like, a charity gold medal,&#8221; Coach Moran <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrtv.com\/news\/local-news\/the-power-of-inclusion-carmel-athlete-with-down-syndrome-honored-after-winning-world-championship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;Everything that every other powerlifter at the event had to do, he did.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Him up there on the podium with that gold banner, first place, and his name with the American flag. I saw that and I just started crying. I couldn&#8217;t hold it in,&#8221; Simpson&#8217;s father, Stephen, said. \u201cHe went crazy. He was jumping up and down and flexing his muscles for the crowd. The response with the audience was terrific, too. They connected with them. The crowd really loves to see them at these meets.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the City of Carmel chose to honor Simpson the same way they honored their Olympic athletes this summer \u2014 by naming a street after him (Sky Simpson Blvd.) \u2014 Simpson said, \u201cI love this city.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-times-unborn-child-why\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The New York Times is suddenly using the term \u2018unborn child.\u2019 The question is, why?<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpson isn\u2019t the only athlete with Down syndrome to make waves. Chris Nikic inspired multiple other athletes when he became the first person with Down syndrome to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/down-syndrome-ultraman-chris-nikic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compete<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and finish an Ironman World Championship. \u201cI am a typical person with Down syndrome and all the associated disabilities, except one,&#8221; Nikic said at the time. &#8220;I focus on my God-given abilities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simpson and Nikic have amazing stories \u2014 and thanks to the inspiration they provide, such amazing stories are becoming even <em>more<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/?s=down+syndrome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">common<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, whether or not they are athletically gifted, people with Down syndrome are worthy of life, dignity, and acknowledgment. Yet, the majority of babies diagnosed with Down syndrome in their mothers\u2019 wombs are targeted for abortion, and in nations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2024-05-01\/iceland-prenatal-testing-down-syndrome-ethics\/103781058\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iceland<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, nearly 100% of preborn babies with Down syndrome are aborted. In England and Wales, around 90% of preborn babies with Down syndrome are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dontscreenusout.org\/press-release-760-abortions-where-baby-had-downs-syndrome-as-momentum-builds-to-stop-abortion-up-to-birth-for-babies-with-downs-syndrome\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the United States, 67% to 85% of all those with a prenatal Down syndrome diagnosis are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC10031387\/#:~:text=Down%20syndrome%20is%20the%20most,1%20in%20every%20700%20births.&amp;text=A%20systematic%20review%20on%20published,prenatal%20diagnosis%20of%20Down%20syndrome.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exterminated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in utero.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Those who see the beauty in individuals with Down syndrome must also learn to recognize that this beauty has been there <em>from the moment they were conceived<\/em>.
