In November, assisted suicide and euthanasia practitioner Ellen Wiebe was blocked<\/a> from killing a woman diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Now, she has been blocked again<\/a> by the very clinic\u00a0she founded herself.<\/p>\n

Justice Simon R. Coval halted attempts at euthanizing the anonymous woman last year, who was refused euthanasia by her regular doctors. The woman claimed to have \u201cakathisia,\u201d which causes restlessness or an inability to sit still, and can sometimes be a side effect of psychotropic medication. Her doctors in her home province refused to approve her request to die, so the woman started looking online for other doctors who might be open to her request.<\/p>\n

According to the court application, she eventually found Wiebe. \u201cAt the end of the first meeting, Dr. Wiebe approved (the woman) for MAID.\u201d<\/p>\n

Coval also said that Wiebe’s approval raises questions about whether or not people are being properly assessed for assisted suicide. Wiebe did not speak to any<\/em> of the woman’s doctors or relatives, and did not<\/em> review her medical records.<\/p>\n

A civil claim was filed, now known to have been from the woman’s husband, accusing Wiebe of negligently approving euthanasia for a patient who does not legally qualify. \u201cIf the defendants proceed with MAID, the death will constitute a battery of (the patient), wrongful death and, potentially a criminal offence,\u201d the claim said. \u201cIt is within the inherent jurisdiction of this honourable court to enjoin allegedly criminal conduct, in this case the termination of a patient\u2019s life where it appears that legislative criteria has not been met, and\/or the protection of a patient from injury.\u201d<\/p>\n

Further newly-released details also said that, when a second witness was not willing to come forward to sign her application, Wiebe had an employee fill in. (In a previous interview<\/a>, Wiebe alluded to this being legal.) Wiebe also supplied a second doctor as required by law.<\/p>\n

However, a new court document indicated that the original injunction against Wiebe expired in November \u2014 and it was the clinic itself, the Willow Reproductive Health Centre, which stepped in to block Wiebe from committing the act.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe society will no longer permit its employees to act as a witness in respect for MAID being considered by Dr. Wiebe,\u201d an affidavit filed by Lisa Redekop, board chair of the non-profit which runs the clinic, said. She also added, \u201cWe have a lot of respect for the work that Ellen does in terms of MAID, but it\u2019s just a service that\u2019s different than what is offered at Willow Reproductive Health.”<\/p>\n

Wiebe, in addition to committing assisted suicide and euthanasia, commits abortions. She originally began the Willow Reproductive Health Centre as an abortion facility, and was committing assisted suicide and euthanasia there as well until the non-profit organization took over. Now, Wiebe is only allowed to conduct assisted suicide-related business in a small office she must rent from the facility.<\/p>\n

Having boasted that she has killed over 400 people, Wiebe said killing her patients brings her great satisfaction. \u201cI love my job,\u201d she said<\/a> of assisted suicide and euthanasia. \u201cI\u2019ve delivered over 1,000 babies \u2014 but this is the very best work I\u2019ve ever done.\u201d<\/p>\n
