Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed a proclamation on January 17 officially certifying the state’s constitutional amendment which declares abortion a constitutional “right.”<\/p>\n

In November, Maryland voters passed the “Reproductive Freedom Amendment,” which solidified the state’s already extreme pro-abortion stance. Maryland does not limit<\/a> abortion by any gestational age, both Medicaid and private health insurance plans are required to cover abortions, and abortions can be committed by non-physicians such as nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and physician assistants.<\/p>\n

\u201cSince day one of my administration, I have made clear my support for a woman\u2019s right to choose,\u201d Moore said in a statement<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cIn November, Marylanders voted overwhelmingly in favor of aligning Maryland\u2019s constitution with our values. This amendment ensures that future generations of Marylanders will have the same reproductive rights Marylanders have today\u2014no matter who is in office.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his tenure as governor, Moore has done much to advance abortion, including securing $15 million<\/a> in abortion funding, stockpiling the abortion pill, and signing<\/a> a “shield law” that protects law-breaking abortionists. He has also actively promoted the state as a “safe haven<\/a>” for abortion.<\/p>\n

The Maryland Catholic Conference released a statement following the amendment’s passage in November.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe passage of Question 1, which enshrines abortion in the Maryland constitution, is a painful moment in Maryland history and one we believe future generations will look back upon with deep regret and bewilderment,” said<\/a> Jenny Kraska, the organization’s executive director.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven before this vote, abortion was legal in Maryland for anyone, any reason and at any time. This vote has made it more difficult for our state to enact any safeguards for women’s health and to respond to changing information and needs. This is deeply troubling and should concern all residents. Through our hearts, prayers, parishes and ministries, we remain firmly committed to walking with women and their children during and after pregnancy. We remain committed to advocating for policies and laws that preserve life and address the root causes that lead to abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n
