That\u2019s the sensational conclusion suggested by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/cycle-tracking-apps-abortion-pregnant-pill-dz0fx7ws9?msockid=19c321fdef89667916db2e03ee216756\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/srh.bmj.com\/content\/early\/2025\/01\/01\/bmjsrh-2024-202573\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">January 2025 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published in the British medical journal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ Sexual &amp; Reproductive Health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening line of a HealthDay News article on the study, republished by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/health-news\/articles\/2025-01-14\/more-abortions-tied-to-natural-family-planning-or-fertility-awareness-methods\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. News and World Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, spelled out \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relying on natural and fertility awareness methods to prevent pregnancy might be linked to an increase in abortions, a new study suggests.\u201d A BBC headline<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c391nlxrv4vo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWomen seeking abortions after using \u2018natural\u2019 contraception.\u201d A Drugs.com headline <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.drugs.com\/news\/more-abortions-tied-natural-family-planning-fertility-awareness-methods-123280.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">read<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cMore abortions tied to natural family planning or fertility awareness methods.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the facts on the possible impact of increased <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-hormonal-natural-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fertility awareness method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> use on abortion rates <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> based on abortion provider British Pregnancy Advisory Service\u2019s (BPAS) own data <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are far less attention-grabbing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fertility awareness method users still represent a tiny fraction of UK women\u2026<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an October 2024 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bpas-campaigns.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/BPAS-Contraception-Re-Imagined-The-Unfinished-Revolution.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BPAS report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a July 2024 BPAS-commissioned survey of contraceptive users found that \u201c1 in 20 respondents are using fertility awareness-based methods (FABM), including 4 per cent who are using FABM with a digital app, and 1 per cent who are using the rhythm method without an app.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026including women seeking abortions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2025 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study analyzed data collected by the BPAS between 2018 and 2023 on what contraception abortion-seekers were using at the time they conceived. In 2018, just 0.4% of respondents seeking an abortion through BPAS reported using a fertility awareness method at the time of contraception. By 2023, that number \u201cjumped\u201d to 2.5% of abortion-seeking women. During that same time, use of hormonal contraception \u2014 be it the pill, patch, etc. \u2014 <em>decreased<\/em> from 19% to 11%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what does that have to do with abortion rates?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During that same time period, the study authors noted, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statistics from Great Britain demonstrate a trend of increasing abortion rates across all ethnicities, levels of deprivation and age groups.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors acknowledged that the reasons for the increase are \u201cmultifactorial,\u201d but opined \u201cone aspect that needs scrutiny is any change in contraceptive use and particularly this surge in the use of ehealth including fertility apps, period tracker apps and natural family planning apps. The possible relationship between these less effective methods of contraception and unplanned pregnancy requires further investigation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>What the authors don&#8217;t seem to scrutinize enough is the potential impact of the UK government&#8217;s &#8220;pills by post&#8221; scheme, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic \u2014 a DIY, at-home, no-test abortion pill protocol allowing women to obtain abortion pills <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/consultations\/home-use-of-both-pills-for-early-medical-abortion\/home-use-of-both-pills-for-early-medical-abortion-up-to-10-weeks-gestation\">much more easily<\/a>, &#8220;following a telephone or e-consultation with a clinician, without the need to first attend a hospital or clinic.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xoH3QCyI3BQ?si=AdARXrUeM2lNsQrr\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fertility awareness methods: \u201cLess effective methods of contraception?\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BMJ study and various news outlets noted the varying pregnancy prevention effectiveness rates of different methods of fertility awareness, and they are not wrong. \u2018Fertility awareness methods\u2019 is an umbrella term for a wide range of methods that can be used to avoid or achieve pregnancy by tracking a woman\u2019s fertile signs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The much-ballyhooed and admittedly less effective <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/fam-basics-what-is-the-rhythm-method-natural-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rhythm method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was the precursor to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/unpacking-the-effectiveness-range-of-fams-given-by-the-cdc\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modern, evidence-based FAMs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which track cervical mucus observations, basal body temperature, and urinary hormone levels, individually or in combination. The effectiveness of these newer FAMs is so much higher than that of the rhythm method that in 2019 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/cdc-changes-effectiveness-rating-on-fertility-awareness-methods-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">updated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its FAM effectiveness stat from 24% to a range \u2014 <strong>2 to 23%<\/strong> \u2014 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depending on the method<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This means that the most effective forms of FAM are on par with the effectiveness of hormonal contraception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet media outlets routinely lump all forms of FAM together, and even the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study did not ascertain what type of FAM abortion-seeking women were using when they conceived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true that cycle tracking apps may not prevent pregnancy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors believe that the abortion-seeking women reported FAM use for contraception were largely using apps, though they acknowledge that this is speculation. But they are right in noting that many cycle tracking apps are just that \u2014 calendar-based (read: rhythm method-based) <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimates <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of fertility that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do not rely<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on women\u2019s observable biomarkers of fertility, be they cervical mucus, basal body temperature, or urinary hormone levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps the hand-wringing over increased uptake of FAMs is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/jan\/15\/contraception-apps-women-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unnecessary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, since<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 70% of women seeking an abortion were not using <strong>any<\/strong> form of contraception at the time they conceived<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The real noteworthy lesson from the BMJ study on FAM use and abortions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most remarkable point from the BMJ study and the various media commentaries on it was the acknowledgment that women, particularly young women, are increasingly dissatisfied with hormonal birth control. The BMJ study noted, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research has suggested a move away from hormonal methods of contraception due to a preference for more natural methods and in particular hesitancy around hormonal methods.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cited the COVID-19 pandemic as having reduced women\u2019s access to \u201cmore effective forms of contraception,\u201d but in its conclusions section admitted that the decreased use of hormonal birth control could also be \u201ca result of preference.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/jan\/15\/contraception-apps-women-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">speculated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wellness culture, suspicion around pharmaceutical companies and a distaste for \u2018unnatural\u201d options\u2019 may be partly to blame\u2026.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sources like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepublicdiscourse.com\/2024\/08\/95570\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Washington Post<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want to blame hormonal contraception hesitancy on social media-fueled misinformation, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/healthcare\/article\/cycle-tracking-apps-abortion-pregnant-pill-dz0fx7ws9?msockid=19c321fdef89667916db2e03ee216756\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">commentaries<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMJ <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study repeat the party line ad nauseam.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reality is, many women don\u2019t love the Pill<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, The Guardian was more self-aware, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2025\/jan\/15\/contraception-apps-women-birth-control\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acknowledging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that many women have \u2018been there, done that,\u2019 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-concerns-women-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found hormonal birth control wanting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut while some may have fallen prey to conspiracy theories, others will have spent years diligently trying option after option \u2013 from the mini-pill, to the injection, implant, cap \u2013 waiting for the appointment, reading up on the pros and cons, looking for the right fit. With the implant finally yanked from my arm, I remember walking out into the rain, arm throbbing, Googling what I could try next. More than eight in 10 of BPAS\u2019s respondents had switched methods at least once.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re learning about (in some cases, experiencing) the connection between hormonal birth control and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/birth-control-cause-liver-tumor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">liver tumors,<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMoa1700732\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breast cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/tiktok-birth-control-blood-clots\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blood clots<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/does-birth-control-affect-blood-sugar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">insulin resistance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hormonal-birth-control-terrible-cost-teenage-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-teen-stroke-coma\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> strokes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/lawsuits-amassing-over-depo-proveras-link-to-brain-tumors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brain tumors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/birth-control-low-libido\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">low libido,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/naturalwomanhood.org\/glaucoma-hormonal-birth-control\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vision problems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among other issues. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/younger-generations-natural-birth-control-reasons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasingly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they\u2019re saying, \u2018no, thanks.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern, evidence-based FAMs offer these women alternatives that prevent pregnancy (if desired) without putting their health at risk.
