(Save the Storks<\/a>) Brittany\u2019s pregnancy was far from the joyful experience she and her husband, Alec, a Save the Storks staff member, had envisioned. Instead of excitement, they faced overwhelming heartbreak and uncertainty. \u201cAt our very first prenatal appointment, Alec and I found out something was not right with our baby,\u201d Brittany recalled. The news marked the beginning of a challenging and emotional journey.<\/p>\n

The couple was referred to a specialist for a detailed ultrasound to \u201cknow their options.\u201d The specialist confirmed their baby had fluid surrounding her head and offered further testing. \u201cThey wanted us to decide if we would continue the pregnancy \u2014 or not,\u201d Brittany explained.<\/p>\n

A 1% Chance at Survival<\/h4>\n

After switching doctors, the couple learned they were having a girl with Turner\u2019s Syndrome. This rare condition meant their daughter was missing an entire chromosome, leading to significant medical challenges, including a heart defect. They were told the baby had only a 1% chance of surviving outside the womb.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery moment of pregnancy that should have been joyful was surrounded by the sadness of \u2018Your baby\u2019s probably not going to live,\u2019\u201d Brittany said. The fear and grief made it difficult for her to bond with her unborn daughter.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was afraid she\u2019d die inside me,\u201d said Brittany.<\/p>\n

As the holidays approached, a patient advocate sat Brittany and Alec down and suggested they start planning a funeral. \u201cAt that point, I nearly lost what little hope I had left,\u201d Brittany shared. Her baby Penny refused to give up. \u201cEvery time someone said this or that wouldn\u2019t go the way we hoped, Penny would prove that she was going to make it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Fight for Survival<\/h4>\n

About six weeks before her due date, Brittany began to believe she could prepare a room for Penny. However, a delivery planning meeting revealed Brittany had preeclampsia, a serious pregnancy complication. She was rushed into an emergency C-section.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was scared out of my mind,\u201d Brittany said. Penny was immediately taken to a nearby children\u2019s hospital when she was born. Brittany saw her daughter briefly but couldn\u2019t hold her. \u201cI didn\u2019t see her again for three days,\u201d Brittany said.<\/p>\n

When Brittany finally saw Penny, she was overwhelmed with emotion. \u201cI was afraid I wasn\u2019t going to love her when I saw her,\u201d she admitted. \u201cBut when I saw her in her small bed, I cried. She was real, and I loved her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Overcoming Obstacles<\/h4>\n

Penny\u2019s fight was far from over. The day after her birth, she underwent emergency surgery for a tear in her intestine. A few months later, she nearly died from a blood clot after heart surgery. \u201cThat wouldn\u2019t be the last time we feared for Penny\u2019s life,\u201d Brittany said.<\/p>\n

Penny spent six months in the NICU, an hour away from the family\u2019s home. Brittany and Alec visited her every other day. \u201cEvery time we left, I cried. It hurt so much to leave her there,\u201d Brittany said. On the days she couldn\u2019t visit, Brittany called the hospital multiple times to check on Penny.<\/p>\n

During this time, the couple was supported by a network of organizations and individuals. \u201cThe staff, nurses, and doctors were amazing in every way,\u201d Brittany said. Local organizations provided meals, gas stipends, and even rent assistance. Friends and family raised funds so Alec could visit Penny regularly after his paternity leave ended.<\/p>\n

Doctors can be wrong. Penny is living proof of that.<\/h4>\n

Today, Penny is thriving, though she still has unique medical needs. Her journey has inspired Brittany to support others facing similar challenges. \u201cLater, I walked with another mom through the journey of having a baby with Turner\u2019s Syndrome,\u201d Brittany shared. \u201cSadly, her little girl didn\u2019t make it. But she told me how grateful she was that I could give her hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

She wants others to know that a diagnosis like Turner\u2019s Syndrome is not a death sentence. \u201cI don\u2019t want others to think that the \u2018kinder\u2019 thing is to end the pregnancy,\u201d she said. \u201cPenny deserved her chance, and she\u2019s the most amazing thing that\u2019s ever happened to us.\u201d…<\/p>\n
