Data recently released<\/a> by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) showed that abortions in the state rose 16% in 2023, in large part because more women are traveling from out of state to kill their preborn children.<\/p>\n

In total, there were 14,124 abortions in Minnesota in 2023, with more than one in five of those abortions being carried out on women who were not Minnesota citizens. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune<\/a>, the number of women traveling from North Dakota, Iowa, and Nebraska to have an abortion in Minnesota has more than doubled since 2021, likely due to preborn protections in place in those states. Also notable was the fact that over 9,000 of the abortions in Minnesota were committed via the abortion pill. Three hundred abortions took place after 20 weeks, which is when the child has a much greater chance of surviving outside the womb, and the latest recorded abortion in the state in 2023 occurred at 29 weeks.<\/p>\n

Though abortions in the state reached a record-low in 2015 with 9,861 deaths, they have been steadily rising since 2020. The number of abortion deaths in 2023 marks a 20-year high for Minnesota.<\/p>\n

The jump in abortion deaths was due in part to the fact that in January 2023, Governor Tim Walz signed legislation<\/a> radically expanding abortion, allowing it until birth with no restrictions. Lawmakers have also repealed several pro-life laws, including one that requires women to be informed about abortion alternatives that may be available from pregnancy resource centers.<\/p>\n

\u201cOften women are making these decisions out of fear and pressure, because they are not given other options,\u201d explained Cathy Blaeser, co-executive director for Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL).<\/p>\n

MCCL also noted that, due to legislative changes, this is the first time that MDH’s report does not include information on infants who survived abortions.<\/p>\n

\u201cPrevious MDH reports show that, in most years, some babies in Minnesota survive abortion and are born alive,\u201d said<\/a> Blaeser. \u201cBut because of the actions of DFL lawmakers and Gov. Walz, there is no longer a requirement to provide born-alive infants\u00a0with care that could save their lives. And no longer will the public even know about these cases and about whether babies are cared for or left to die.\u201d<\/p>\n

MCCL said it remains committed to fighting for the state’s preborn children.<\/p>\n

“This is not what Minnesotans want to be known for,” said Blaeser. “We want to be a state where both moms and babies receive love and support and where no one is left out.\u201d<\/p>\n
