{"id":323709,"date":"2024-12-29T07:12:31","date_gmt":"2024-12-29T13:12:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=323709"},"modified":"2024-12-29T11:08:47","modified_gmt":"2024-12-29T17:08:47","slug":"un-office-unsafe-abortion-femicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-office-unsafe-abortion-femicide\/","title":{"rendered":"UN office wants to label deaths from &#8216;unsafe abortion&#8217; as &#8216;femicide&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/un-office-proposes-labeling-abortion-related-deaths-as-femicides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-Fam<\/a>) \u2014 As the UN carries out a sixteen-day campaign against \u201cgender-based violence,\u201d its Western European regional office\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unric.org\/en\/behind-closed-doors-the-deadly-reality-of-femicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed<\/a>\u00a0a definition of \u201cfemicide,\u201d historically understood as the intentional murder of women, usually by men, to include deaths related to \u201cunsafe abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The term \u201cfemicide\u201d dates to 1976, and was coined by feminist activist Diana Russell, but as the UN Western European office notes, the concept has \u201cgrown increasingly complex\u201d since then, leading to \u201ca lack of standardization\u201d and \u201cinconsistent definitions across regions and countries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-not-safe-family-planning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New study: Abortion is not needed for safe and successful family planning<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2012, the World Health Organization (WHO) wrote that femicide is \u201cgenerally understood to involve intentional murder of women,\u201d and that this definition is \u201ccommonly used in policies, laws and research.\u201d\u00a0 Nevertheless, they note that some \u201cbroader definitions include any killings of women or girls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sex-selective abortion is often included in femicide definitions because it involves the intentional killing of unborn girls specifically because they are female.\u00a0 However, the idea of including the deaths of women due to abortion complications is more novel\u2014and controversial.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, the European Institute for Gender Equality\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eige.europa.eu\/publications\/terminology-and-indicators-data-collection-rape-femicide-and-intimate-partner-violence-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">surveyed<\/a>\u00a0the definitions of rape, femicide, and intimate partner violence across Europe.\u00a0 It noted that several European countries define deaths resulting from female genital mutilation or \u201cunsafe\u201d abortion as separate crimes, but none of them include these deaths within the definition of femicide.\u00a0 The only source surveyed that proposed its inclusion was the then-current UN Special Rapporteur on the causes and consequences of violence against women and girls, Rashida Manjoo.<\/p>\n<p>In her 2012\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/undocs.org\/A\/HRC\/20\/16\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0to the UN General Assembly, Manjoo wrote about \u201cgender-related killings,\u201d also known as femicides, and proposed that \u201cdeaths due to poorly conducted or clandestine abortions\u201d are an indirect category of such killings.\u00a0 Also included were maternal mortality and deaths related to organized crime, drug dealing, and human trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>While the inclusion of deaths from indirect&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Read the entire article at <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/un-office-proposes-labeling-abortion-related-deaths-as-femicides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-Fam<\/a>&#8230;<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor\u2019s Note: Rebecca Oas, Ph.D. writes for C-Fam. <a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/friday_fax\/un-office-proposes-labeling-abortion-related-deaths-as-femicides\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This article<\/a>\u00a0first appeared in the Friday Fax, an internet report published weekly by C-Fam (Center for Family &amp; Human Rights), a New York and Washington DC-based research institute (<a href=\"https:\/\/c-fam.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/c-fam.org\/<\/a>).
