\"ap<\/a>Yesterday, the Associated Press announced<\/a> that, for the sake of making its reporting more \u201cprecise and accurate\u201d and to avoid \u201clabeling people,\u201d it would no longer employ the term \u201cillegal immigrant\u201d to describe individuals who, er, immigrate illegally to the United States. In response, the folks at Twitchy have a darn good question<\/a>: if the AP \u201cdoesn\u2019t wish to label people,\u201d then \u201cwill they stop accepting the use of fetus?\u201d<\/p>\n

Granted, \u201cfetus,\u201d \u201cembryo,\u201d and \u201czygote\u201d aren\u2019t inaccurate terms, but neither is \u201cillegal immigrant.\u201d And while hearing the latter doesn\u2019t lead anyone to believe that people who jump the border somehow aren\u2019t human, the former are<\/i> part of a pervasive campaign<\/a> to do exactly that<\/a> to unborn babies, who objectively are human beings. But “fetus” and the like obfuscate this fact, instead cultivating the impression that unborn children are some kind of inhuman objects or growths.<\/p>\n

If the goal really were to describe everyone as correctly and fairly as possible (and not, say, scrubbing language to serve liberals\u2019 interests), then the AP would have to extend the same consideration to the unborn, so as not to obscure the fact that the abortion debate is about a procedure that destroys human beings. How about \u201cembryonic human\u201d or \u201cfetal person\u201d? Or we could just keep it simple: \u201cunborn baby.\u201d All three options would be clearer and more precise.<\/p>\n

In fact, abortion discussions are rife with far worse offenders than \u201cfetus.\u201d Can you get more dehumanizing than describing a dead unborn baby as simply \u201ctissue\u201d or the \u201cproducts of conception\u201d?<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the classic \u201ctermination of pregnancy\u201d and its variations. For one thing, to talk of abortion as merely \u201cterminating\u201d or \u201cending\u201d something is less precise than stating how<\/i> it brings about that end: by applying lethal force – in short, by \u201ckilling.\u201d We don\u2019t describe most people\u2019s deaths primarily through euphemism, yet somehow, I doubt that\u2019ll make it into the next AP Stylebook revision.<\/p>\n

For another, the state of being pregnant is \u201cterminated\u201d whenever a woman gives birth, miscarries, or aborts. If we had the technology to transplant fetuses to artificial wombs, that would also \u201cterminate pregnancies.\u201d But 99 times out of 100, \u201ctermination of pregnancy\u201d means only one of those: when the baby itself is terminated. (Say, there\u2019s another area where our language could use a tune-up: isn\u2019t it generally verboten to refer to others as \u201cit\u201d rather than \u201che,\u201d \u201cshe,\u201d \u201chim,\u201d or \u201cher\u201d?)<\/p>\n

Perhaps worst of all is when the baby is directly referred to as<\/i> the \u201cpregnancy,\u201d which is an affront to the English language as well as human dignity. Obviously, pregnancy is the condition<\/i> of carrying a developing child; it is not the child being carried. So why do abortionists and their allies routinely speak of \u201cremoving the pregnancy,\u201d the \u201csize of a pregnancy,\u201d \u201cinjecting into the pregnancy,\u201d etc.? Must even basic literacy yield to the interests of pro-choice propaganda efforts?<\/p>\n

In a word, yes. Don\u2019t expect the AP or the mainstream media to incorporate any of the above into their abortion reporting, because the real agenda is making sure the wrong language serves the right agendas. When there are politics to consider, accuracy is an afterthought.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
