{"id":323542,"date":"2024-12-23T17:15:34","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T23:15:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=323542"},"modified":"2024-12-22T15:21:00","modified_gmt":"2024-12-22T21:21:00","slug":"christmas-party-premature-babies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/christmas-party-premature-babies\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas party celebrates the lives of premature babies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/christmas-celebrations-for-premmie-neonatal-graduates-in-walsall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) \u2014 A neonatal community outreach team has hosted a Christmas party for premature babies and families who have received care at their hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Just outside Birmingham, Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust\u2019s Neonatal Community Outreach Team (NCOT) provides nursing care and support for unwell and premature babies who have spent time in the neonatal unit and, each month, they run a support group, which first-time mum Madison Johnson and her seven-month-old Jax have just started attending.<\/p>\n<p>In December, they hold a special Christmas party for Walsall\u2019s youngest and bravest patients and families.<\/p>\n<p>Baby Jax weighed just 3lb 8oz when he was born eight weeks prematurely, and spent six and a half weeks in the neonatal unit at Walsall Manor Hospital. He and his mother attended the annual Christmas party, which was an opportunity to come together with other parents and families and share their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to get out of the house with your baby and to meet other mums who have been through a similar experience to myself\u201d, she <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walsallhealthcare.nhs.uk\/news\/2024\/12\/13\/festive-cheer-for-premature-babies-and-their-families\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CIt%E2%80%99s%20nice%20to%20get%20out%20of%20the%20house%20with%20your%20baby%20and%20to%20meet%20other%20mums%20who%20have%20been%20through%20a%20similar%20experience%20to%20myself.%20As%20well%20as%20being%20able%20to%20come%20and%20celebrate%20my%20first%20Christmas%20with%20Jax%20and%20make%20it%20special%20for%20him.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cAs well as being able to come and celebrate my first Christmas with Jax and make it special for him\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff were amazing on the ward and could not do enough for Jax or me. I can\u2019t thank them enough\u201d, Madison said.<\/p>\n<p>Consultant paediatrician Dr Tamsin Lane, one of the team members who organised the Christmas party, said \u201cHaving a baby is hard enough, but having one on the Neonatal unit can be so stressful\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an opportunity for the mums and families to come together and meet new people who have also gone through a similar experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/propublica-planned-agenda-problem-blame-pro-life\/\"><em>ProPublica\u2019s long-planned agenda is clear: Whatever the problem, blame pro-life laws<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nicky Heath, a Neonatal Outreach Sister, <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.walsallhealthcare.nhs.uk\/news\/2024\/12\/13\/festive-cheer-for-premature-babies-and-their-families\/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20run%20this,first%20Christmas%20together.%E2%80%9D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> \u201cWe run this group once a month all year through and the parents love it. Going home can be daunting for mums and families and coming to the group gives them support and they also have us to lean on if needed\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday is extra special as for most families this is also their first Christmas together\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Survival rates have improved for premature babies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hosting support groups and Christmas parties allows families to engage with others who have been through similar experiences, which in turn raises awareness of how many families have welcomed a premature or unwell baby.<\/p>\n<p>A 2008 study looking at survival rates for a neonatal intensive care unit in London <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1651-2227.2007.00637.x#:~:text=Table%202.%20Overall%20survival%20to%20discharge%20at%20each%20gestational%20age%2C%20as%20a%20proportion%20of%20all%20admissions%20to%20the%20neonatal%20unit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that neonatal survival rates at 22 and 23 weeks gestation had improved over time. In 1981-85, no babies who were born at these gestational ages survived to discharge. However, by 1986-90, 19% did and this increased to 54% in the period 1996-2000.<\/p>\n<p>In the decade to 2019 alone, the survival rate for extremely premature babies born at 23 weeks <a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/articles\/109-new-bapm-framework-on-extreme-preterm-birth-published#:~:text=When%20the%20last,expected%20to%20survive.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">doubled<\/a>, prompting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bapm.org\/resources\/80-perinatal-management-of-extreme-preterm-birth-before-27-weeks-of-gestation-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new guidance<\/a> from the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM) that enables doctors to intervene to save premature babies from 22 weeks gestation.
