{"id":323520,"date":"2024-12-23T06:51:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-23T12:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=323520"},"modified":"2024-12-22T12:51:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-22T18:51:17","slug":"virginia-governor-maternal-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/virginia-governor-maternal-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia governor unveils new initiatives to improve maternal health"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>On December 17, Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin announced a slew of new initiatives meant to help families and improve maternal health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/newsroom\/news-releases\/2024\/december\/name-1037759-en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news release<\/a> from Youngkin&#8217;s office, the new initiatives focus on three pillars: improving data, expanding targeted high-quality care, and increasing awareness.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The future and foundation of our Commonwealth start with healthy mothers and healthy babies. Working together we can improve maternal health for mothers from every corner of our Commonwealth. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/j43POdKgNc\">https:\/\/t.co\/j43POdKgNc<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eAVdta7A6D\">pic.twitter.com\/eAVdta7A6D<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Governor Glenn Youngkin (@GovernorVA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovernorVA\/status\/1869164290068111360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Among the initiatives are two legislative targets. The first would require all hospitals to &#8220;participate in quality improvement initiatives and all emergency services have adequate provisions and protocols, known as &#8216;safety bundles,&#8217; to care for obstetric patients, recognizing urgent maternal warning signs including cardiac conditions.&#8221; The second would allow midwives from out of state to obtain a Virginia license to practice in the state, something that is not currently legal.<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin also issued <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.virginia.gov\/media\/governorvirginiagov\/executive-actions\/ED-11---Maternal-Health-FINAL-12.17.24.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Executive Order Eleven<\/a>, which directs the Virginia Department of Health to add to the Maternal and Child Health Data Dashboard to include data on &#8220;pregnancy-associated and pregnancy-related mortality and causes,&#8221; while creating a central website on maternal health to provide families with essential resources. The website will be created using $1 million of existing Transformation Office funds. The order also directs\u00a0the Department of Medicaid Services to form a work group of Medicaid Managed Care Organizations to improve prenatal, delivery, and postpartum services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mom-heisman-trophy-winner-mistake-blessing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mom of Heisman Trophy winner: \u2018What they called my mistake was my biggest blessing\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the governor announced budget proposals for &#8220;perinatal hubs, additional funding for doulas and community health workers, an awareness campaign, and increasing reimbursement for high-demand residency slots.&#8221; These would all aim to improve maternal health, decrease maternal mortality, and improve both maternal and infant outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we started on our journey, we knew that we needed to approach the problem in a new way, our overall guiding principle was this: We will see every mother and work collectively to provide the care she needs to deliver a healthy, thriving baby,\u201d said Youngkin<strong>. <\/strong>\u201cToday, we are going further on all three of our key pillars to ensure mothers have the resources they need during pregnancy, during birth, and postpartum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery mother deserves the peace of mind that comes with knowing she and her baby are receiving the best possible care,\u201d added Secretary of Health and Human Resources Janet V.
