Christopher Wray, the current director of the FBI, announced in a town hall meeting with FBI employees his intent to resign<\/a> at the end of President Joe Biden’s term. Wray is resigning even though he still has three years left on his 10-year contract.<\/p>\n

The FBI and the Department of Justice (DOJ) have been accused<\/a> of politicization under the Biden-Harris administration, and the targeting of the pro-life movement, in particular, has been a point of contention. Congressman Chip Roy recently sent a letter<\/a> to Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland demanding that both organizations preserve all records and files pertaining to the prosecution of pro-life activists when the Biden team transitions out of the White House.<\/p>\n

Wray took office in 2017, during Donald Trump’s first term, and remained in office through the Biden administration. The 10-year contract given to FBI directors is meant to last through multiple administrations, as a way of preventing the bureau from becoming politicized. Though Wray was originally selected for the job by then-President Trump, Trump indicated soon after his 2024 presidential election win that he plans to nominate Kash Patel<\/a> to lead the FBI through the incoming administration. Wray, therefore, had the option of either resigning or being fired.<\/p>\n

In his remarks, Wray said he believes his resignation is the best move for the FBI.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter weeks of careful thought, I\u2019ve decided the right thing for the Bureau is for me to serve until the end of the current Administration in January and then step down. My goal is to keep the focus on\u202four mission \u2014 the indispensable work you\u2019re doing on behalf of the American people every day,” Wray said. “In my view, this is the best way to avoid dragging the Bureau deeper into the fray, while reinforcing the values and principles that are so important to how we do our work.”<\/p>\n

Wray testified<\/a> before the Senate Homeland Security Committee that 70% of violence since the 2022 leak regarding the Dobbs<\/em> Supreme Court decision had been committed by pro-abortion activists against the pro-life movement. Yet the Biden administration chiefly focused its attention<\/a> on persecuting pro-lifers instead. A Daily Caller report noted that 205 FACE Act cases were brought against pro-lifers between 1994 and 2024, with at least 55 (27%) of those cases prosecuted by the Biden-Harris DOJ alone<\/em>; this means that in less than four years, the Biden-Harris DOJ prosecuted more than one-fourth of all FACE Act cases since the Act came into existence 30 years ago.<\/p>\n

However, it seems unlikely that this targeting of the pro-life movement is the core reason for President-elect Trump’s desire to oust Wray, who led the FBI in investigating both Biden and Trump for mishandling sensitive and classified documents, and also oversaw an inquiry into Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who recently was pardoned by his father. \u201c[Wray] invaded Mar-a-Lago,\u201d Trump told NBC News<\/a> in an interview on Sunday. \u201cI\u2019m very unhappy with the things he\u2019s done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wray expressed difficulty in arriving at his decision to resign. “This is not easy for me,” he said. “I love this place, I love our mission, and I love our people \u2014 but my focus is, and always has been, on us and doing what\u2019s right for the FBI.”<\/p>\n
