Here&#8217;s why he should."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>As Donald Trump prepares for his <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/donald-trump-victory-2024-presidential-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second term<\/a> as president, the issue of how he will handle abortion is foremost in the minds of many. While Trump instituted some pro-life measures during his first term in 2016, he has since walked back many of his supposedly pro-life principles, openly refusing to support a nationwide law protecting preborn children from abortion and saying it&#8217;s an issue that should be left to individual states. Now, he has said he has no plans to restrict abortion pills, either.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with Meet the Press, Trump spoke with Kristen Welker about numerous issues, one of which was abortion. \u201c<\/p>\n<p>More than half of abortions in this country are medication abortions. Will you restrict the availability of abortion pills when you\u2019re in office?\u201d Welker asked. Trump&#8217;s answer, though ultimately non-committal, signaled that he intends to keep abortion pills easily available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll probably stay with exactly what I\u2019ve been saying for the last two years,\u201d Trump said. \u201cAnd the answer is no.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When further pressed to say if he would commit to that position, he slightly wavered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, I commit. I mean&#8230; things change. I think they change. I hate to go on shows like Joe Biden, \u2018I\u2019m not going to give my son a pardon. I will not under any circumstances give him a pardon.\u2019 I watched this and I always knew he was going to give him a pardon,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And so, I don\u2019t like putting myself in a position like that. So things do change. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s going to change at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-media-max-width=\"560\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Trump says he will not restrict the availability of abortion pills <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AkB3CWd36z\">pic.twitter.com\/AkB3CWd36z<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Simon Ateba (@simonateba) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/simonateba\/status\/1865781657984242166?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 8, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Trump Administration&#8217;s responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Trump took credit for a number of pro-life initiatives in his first term, including nominating pro-life justices <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/senate-confirms-trump-nominee-neil-gorsuch-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Neil Gorsuch<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/senate-confirms-kavanaugh-supreme-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brett Kavanaugh<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amy-coney-barrett-confirmed-supreme-court-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amy Coney Barrett<\/a> to the Supreme Court. In June of 2022, these three justices joined the majority in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/supreme-court-overturns-roe-v-wade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overturning <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/a> in the <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em> decision. The Trump administration also issued a rule for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ninth-circuit-abortion-businesses-titlex-rule-defund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Title X funding<\/a>, mandating that abortion services be separate from family planning services for recipient organizations. He also not only reinstated, but <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/trump-moves-expand-international-pro-life-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanded<\/a>, the Mexico City Policy, which prevents the United States from funding international organizations that promote abortion. Additionally, he supported the Hyde Amendment, which bars the use of federal dollars from funding abortion; the Hyde Amendment is estimated to have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-hyde-amendment-saved-2-4-million-lives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saved millions of lives<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While running for his second term, however, Trump&#8217;s tune changed. He publicly vowed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/01\/politics\/trump-federal-abortion-ban\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">veto<\/a> any attempts at restricting abortion at the federal level, and initially voiced <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/trump-says-wants-make-ivf-treatments-paid-government-insurance-compani-rcna168804\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposition<\/a> to Florida&#8217;s law protecting preborn children from abortion after six weeks gestation, though he eventually appeared to change his mind and offer his support. He has <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-abortion-election-2024-ivf-contraception-d91f0959087e803db390be11eb60975b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> some laws protecting preborn children across the country as being &#8220;too tough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And yet, at the same time, Trump has nominated Dr. Marty Makary to lead the FDA, and Robert F. Kennedy to lead the Department of Health and Human Services. Makary has expressed strong pro-life sentiment \u2014 strong enough for the abortion industry to label him an &#8220;anti-abortion extremist&#8221; who they fear &#8220;could weaponize the FDA to effectively ban medication abortion&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy, however, has expressed strong pro-abortion sentiment. Yet Trump stated upon his nomination that &#8220;[t]he Safety and Health of all Americans is the most important role of any Administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, and food additives that have contributed to the overwhelming Health Crisis in this Country&#8230;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The question is, how will the Trump administration ensure that women are protected from a drug for which nearly all safeguards have been removed, without research to support their removal?<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gnEHZiud8dg?si=g3J_CmNW__B0n7oa\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>If no one has to report injuries, the abortion pill&#8217;s &#8220;safety&#8221; should be questioned\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion pills, as mentioned by Welker, have become the main type of abortion taking place in the United States (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-skyrocketing-63-percent-abortion-pill\/\">63% of all abortions<\/a>) \u2014 something more by design than by happenstance. Pro-abortion administrations have worked in tandem with the abortion industry for years in an effort to make chemical abortions more widespread.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, the Obama administration first <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-fda-commissioner-expanded-abortion-pill-obama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weakened<\/a> the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation System (REMS) safety requirements for chemical abortions, making it to where women no longer needed to take the drugs in front of a clinician in person, and expanding the use of abortion pills from seven weeks to 10 weeks gestation. Non-fatal adverse events (complications) were also no longer required to be reported. The Biden administration <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">followed suit<\/a>, eliminating the requirement for the drugs to be dispensed in person, and allowing them to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sent through the mail<\/a>. In 2023, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-retail-pharmacies-abortion-pills-prescription\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that retail pharmacies could begin dispensing the drugs.<\/p>\n<p>Despite being framed as &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fact-check-abortion-pill-safer-tylenol-viagra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">safer than Tylenol<\/a>,&#8221; there are numerous potential known complications of mifepristone (the abortion pill).<\/p>\n<p>The abortion pill is known to cause severe cramping, contractions, and heavy bleeding, as well as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headaches. Studies have shown chemical abortion to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-four-times-dangerous-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four times more dangerous<\/a> than a first-trimester surgical abortion, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additionally found<\/a> that approximately 6% of women in at least one study experienced complications severe enough to require an emergency room or urgent care visit. However, the real number of visits could be even higher, as women are encouraged by the abortion industry to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-workers-lie-miscarriages\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lie to<\/a> emergency room providers and say they are experiencing a natural miscarriage as opposed to post-abortion complications (which then misattributes those complications elsewhere). And thanks to the Obama administration, any complications that <em>do<\/em> arise (other than death) are not required to be reported to the manufacturer.<\/p>\n<p>It is very easy to claim that the abortion pill is &#8220;safe&#8221; when the only reason it appears to be safe is because no one has to report any non-fatal adverse events. There is also no federal requirement to report abortions <strong>or<\/strong> abortion complications.<\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-abortion-pill-protocol-access-safety\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">no-test<\/a>&#8221; abortion pill protocol is even more risky for women. Without an ultrasound or any blood tests beforehand, there is no way to truly confirm a preborn child&#8217;s gestational age, and no way to rule out an extra-uterine pregnancy or any other contraindications that may put the mother at risk.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who will be held accountable?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, three states are suing the FDA for making all of these changes &#8220;without any studies that evaluated the impact of removing all of these interrelated safeguards at once.&#8221; As Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-states-sue-fda-abortion-pill-expansion\/\">previously reported<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>According to the lawsuit, \u201c[] the FDA has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-lawmakers-virtual-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">enabled online abortion providers<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/virtual-abortion-pill-dispensaries-shipping-drugs-minors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mail<\/a>\u00a0FDA approved abortion drugs to women in states that regulate abortion\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-tests-accountability-npr-online-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dispensing<\/a>\u00a0abortion drugs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-care-mere-minutes-follow-up\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with no doctor care, no exam, and no in-person follow-up care<\/a>. These dangerous drugs are now flooding states like Missouri and Idaho and sending women in these States to the emergency room.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Live Action News has previously documented that mifepristone\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 label<\/a>\u00a0still contains a black box warning for sepsis, bleeding, and other life-threatening risks.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>In addition, published percentages for emergency room (ER) visits on the drug\u2019s insert indicate that 2.9 to 4.6 percent of women who take abortion drugs end up in the emergency room,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicating<\/a>\u00a0that abortion pill ER visits could be in the\u00a0tens of thousands\u00a0every year. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addition<\/a>, the FDA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DANCO_MedGuide_ENG_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medication guide<\/a>\u00a0acknowledges that as many as seven percent (7%) of women will need surgery after taking mifepristone \u201cto stop bleeding\u201d or to complete the abortion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If the Trump administration truly wishes to hold the FDA accountable for alleged harms done to the health of Americans, its first actions should be to restrict a drug regimen that not only injures women without accountability, but which is deliberately intended to end the lives of the most defenseless.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/end-taxpayer-dollars-to-planned-parenthood\/\"><b><i>Tell President Trump, RFK, Jr., Elon, and Vivek: Stop killing America\u2019s future. <\/i><\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/end-taxpayer-dollars-to-planned-parenthood\/\"><b><i>Defund Planned Parenthood NOW!<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Donald Trump prepares for his second term as president, the issue of how he will handle abortion is foremost in the minds of many.
