On November 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released its newest abortion report<\/a>, showing that in 2022, abortions dropped by 2%\u00a0\u2014 from <\/span>625,978 <\/span>reported<\/a> by the CDC in <\/span>2021<\/a>\u00a0to <\/span>613,383 abortions reported in 2022 (a decrease of nearly 12,600 abortions).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Abortion data published by the CDC typically show far fewer abortions than amounts generally published by the Guttmacher Institute, which has historically not published data on an annual basis. The CDC<\/a> noted that reporting of abortion data is “voluntary,” and that while “most states and jurisdictions” require abortion data to be submitted by hospitals, physicians, and others, this “reporting is not complete in all areas, including in certain areas with reporting requirements.” <\/span><\/p>\n

This means that “the level of detail reported to CDC might vary from year to year and by reporting area,” and can sometimes make annual comparisons challenging. Comparisons over time were assembled from data from \u201cthe 47 reporting areas that reported each year during 2013\u20132022 (46 states and New York City),\u201d according to the CDC.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The CDC report for 2022 included only \u201clegal induced abortions\u201d which were \u201cprovided voluntarily to the CDC by the central health agencies of 48 reporting areas (46 states, the District of Columbia, and New York City, excluding California, Maryland, New Hampshire, and New Jersey<\/strong>.” The CDC defined a “legal abortion” as one <\/span>\u201cperformed by a licensed clinician<\/strong> within the limits of state or jurisdiction law.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Tragically, abortion-related deaths climbed to nearly a dozen women over two years of reports (2020 and 2021). Data for 2022-2023 is not yet available. <\/span>These numbers will likely not receive the same media attention as the deaths of women in pro-life states, dishonestly attributed to pro-life laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    The CDC’s reported abortion rate for 2022 was 11.2 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years \u2014 a 3%<\/strong> decrease from 2021, down “<\/span>from 11.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years” in 2021,” according to the CDC.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In addition, the abortion ratio decreased 2% (from 204 abortions per 1,000 live births). <\/span><\/p>\n

    From 2013 to 2022, the total number of reported abortions decreased 5% (from 640,154), the abortion rate decreased 10% (from 12.4 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15\u201344 years), and the abortion ratio increased 1% (from 198 abortions per 1,000 live births).<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

    According to<\/a> Charlotte Lozier Institute Associate Scholar Dr. Michael New<\/a>, \u201cThis is the first time the CDC has released data on the incidence of abortion post-Dobbs.” He added that <\/span>\u201cAbortions fell in states that passed strong pro-life laws & increased elsewhere. [Fifteen] states had either a heartbeat act or an abortion ban in place for more than a month. Abortions fell in all 15 states. Abortions increased in 28 of the other 33 states reporting data.”<\/span><\/p>\n

    Additionally,\u00a0\u201cSome states saw abortions increase dramatically due to out-of-state travel,\u201d and\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThe number of abortions performed in New Mexico more than doubled Abortions increased in Kansas by more than 50%. Abortions increased in CO, DE, MN, NV, NC, and WA by more than 20%,\u201d according to Dr. New.<\/span><\/p>\n
