{"id":321781,"date":"2024-11-18T15:21:53","date_gmt":"2024-11-18T21:21:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=321781"},"modified":"2024-11-18T13:27:52","modified_gmt":"2024-11-18T19:27:52","slug":"pro-lifers-abortion-buffer-zone-quebec","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-lifers-abortion-buffer-zone-quebec\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-lifers challenge abortion facility &#8216;buffer zone&#8217; law in Quebec"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.cqv.qc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Quebec Life Coalition<\/a>, along with other pro-life organizations, is <a href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-news\/anti-abortion-activists-challenge-quebec-law-forcing-demonstrators-to-keep-distance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging<\/a> the &#8216;buffer zone&#8217; law in Quebec, which they argue violates their freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.<\/p>\n<p>The Act Respecting Health Services and Social Services <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca\/en\/document\/cs\/s-4.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">states<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>No person may, within a distance of 50 metres from the grounds on which a facility or premises providing voluntary termination of pregnancy services are situated, demonstrate in any manner or in any other way intervene to<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>(1) attempt to dissuade a woman from obtaining such a service or contest or condemn her choice of obtaining or having obtained the service; or<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>(2) attempt to dissuade a person from providing, or from participating in the provision of, such a service or contest or condemn the person&#8217;s choice of providing, or participating in the provision of, such a service or working in such a place.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Attorney for the pro-lifers, Robert E. Reynolds, told a court on Thursday that the &#8220;inoperable and unconstitutional&#8221; law is preventing peaceful pro-lifers from offering &#8220;sidewalk counseling.&#8221; President of the Quebec Life Coalition, Georges Buscemi, said that sidewalk counseling is a peaceful way to offer alternatives to women who may be seeking abortion. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theunchoice.com\/coerced.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Studies show<\/a> that 64% of post-abortive women felt pressured to abort. At the same time, 67% received no counseling before undergoing the abortion and 79% received no information about available alternatives. Often, mothers face pressure from parents, boyfriends, employers, and friends to undergo an abortion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FCampaignLifeCoalition%2Fposts%2Fpfbid02r6Zz2WFCEGBz8xLH98L4VKPX971u1cHrkJ6EFYAncoHLoUbxKMdjzmAWYqkSDEg4l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"524\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oregon-spike-late-term-abortions-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Report: Oregon sees 165% spike in late-term abortions in just one year<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe plaintiffs have without a doubt the right to peacefully exercise their right to freedom of expression \u2026 and more specifically on sidewalks in front of buildings where abortions are provided,\u201d said Reynolds.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the fact that women have expressed gratitude for pro-life sidewalk counselors who helped them turn away from abortion, Quebec&#8217;s attorneys said that the &#8216;buffer zone&#8217; law is in place to protect vulnerable women.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney Eric Canten said that in the case of this law, it is reasonable to limit pro-lifers&#8217; Charter rights and that they could still spread their message outside of the 50-meter zone.<\/p>\n<p>Quebec Superior Court Justice Lysane Cree <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/10871648\/anti-abortion-activists-quebec-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has yet<\/a> to rule on the case after hearing final arguments on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/pardon-face-act-prisoners-petition\/\"><b><i>Call on President Trump to pardon the FACE Act prisoners on his first day in office.<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Quebec Life Coalition, along with other pro-life organizations, is challenging the &#8216;buffer zone&#8217; law in Quebec, which they argue violates their freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly enshrined in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
