{"id":321295,"date":"2024-11-07T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2024-11-07T15:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=321295"},"modified":"2024-11-08T16:55:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-08T22:55:49","slug":"first-catholic-medical-school-uk-open-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/first-catholic-medical-school-uk-open-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Treating the whole person: First Catholic medical school in UK plans to open in 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Mary University in London <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stmarys.ac.uk\/news\/2024\/st-marys-university-announces-plans-to-open-school-of-medicine\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has announced plans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to open a modern <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/260267\/britain-to-get-its-first-catholic-medical-school-in-2026\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pro-life medical school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2026 \u2014 the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/260267\/britain-to-get-its-first-catholic-medical-school-in-2026\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first Catholic medical school<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the United Kingdom.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stmarys.ac.uk\/about\/catholic-mission\/about.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inception in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1850<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the school has pursued a \u201cdistinctive Catholic identity\u201d with a goal to \u201cdevelop the whole person and empower our community to have a positive impact on the world.\u201d To that end, it intends to establish a \u201cforward-thinking centre of medical training\u201d that will \u201ccontribute to the workforce development demands in the UK for more doctors and medical professionals, but it will also train global professionals able to work anywhere in the world.\u201d Training medical professionals with the best practices to treat the whole person, including preborn children, is desperately needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/NEJMra1111610\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there is a critical and alarming deficit of medical professionals, including midwives. Approximately 4.3 million doctors and nurses were needed as of 2014 to meet the existing medical needs of a global population. The crisis is especially dire where there are insufficient human resources to meet even basic needs. According to the study, there were 57 countries that failed to meet minimum workforce criteria. A shortage of doctors is not just an international problem; the United States was predicted to have a shortage of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">85,000 doctors by 2020 and 260,000 nurses by href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/catholic-pro-life-medical-complex-michigan\/\">recent announcement<\/a> that Catholic Healthcare International (CHI) will utilize the former campus of Trinity Healthcare to establish a School of Osteopathic Medicine as well as &#8220;outpatient and rehabilitative medicine, an embryo orphanage, a birthing unit, family practice, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/two-decades-terri-schiavo-documentary-short-facts\/\">Terri Schiavo<\/a> Home for the Brain Injured.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>According to a press release from Catholic Healthcare International, founder Jere Palazzolo stated, \u201cSt. Pio\u2019s charism of care will bring healing to the body, mind and spirit of the patients served by the St. Pio physicians who will be trained at what will be the Nation\u2019s most faithful Catholic Medical School.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note, 11\/8\/24: This article has been updated with the most
