The self-described \u201cMichael Myers\u201d of Tennessee was sentenced on Halloween 2024 for the murder of his girlfriend and preborn child. Joshua Dotson\u2019s lack of remorse made the sentencing easy for the presiding judge, who <\/span>declared<\/span><\/a>, \u201cThis is one of the saddest situations I\u2019ve seen in my career…\u201d and \u201cYou will never show remorse for the loss you\u2019ve caused. The jury got it right.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While his defense attorneys argued for him to serve each sentence concurrently, he was instead ordered to serve 51 years for the murder of his girlfriend and another 51 years for the murder of a child in the womb. That adds up to a 102-year sentence for the horrific 2020 murders.<\/span><\/p>\n

Jamesha Covson was 19 years old and her baby was seven months gestation when Dotson shot her and their preborn child <\/span>through the door<\/span><\/a> of her apartment. After immediately leaving the scene, he returned and shot her several more times, according to witnesses. Later, he posted a sickening tribute on social media, claiming to hope she would \u201cfly high.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Shockingly, Dotson <\/span>testified on his own behalf<\/span><\/a>, referring to himself as a \u201cserial killer\u201d and like \u201cMichael Myers\u201d \u2014 a fictional horror movie character from the famed “Halloween” horror series.\u00a0 He also alluded to previous murders he committed, which have not been substantiated by p<\/span>rosecutors or police.<\/span><\/p>\n

A<\/span> statement from the Shelby County District Attorney\u2019s Office read, \u201cToday\u2019s sentencing brings a measure of justice for Jamesha Covson and her unborn child. The court\u2019s decision affirms that those who commit acts of violence with such disregard for human life will be held accountable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A leading cause of death among pregnant women is homicide, as determined by researchers in a <\/span>2021 study<\/span><\/a> in the <\/span>Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology<\/span><\/a>. As reported by <\/span>Live Action News<\/span><\/a>, the study revealed that homicide during pregnancy \u201c<\/span>exceeded all the leading causes of maternal mortality.\u201d\u00a0 This sad statistic is especially true for Covson who, as a young Black woman, was at a \u201csignificantly elevated\u201d risk of homicide, <\/span>according to the study<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pregnant and postpartum women are vulnerable to domestic violence.\u00a0 The Family Violence Prevention Fund has reported that <\/span>more than any other cause<\/span><\/a>, women die by homicide at the hands of their partner.<\/span><\/p>\n
