{"id":320411,"date":"2024-10-17T18:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-17T23:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=320411"},"modified":"2024-10-20T10:51:13","modified_gmt":"2024-10-20T15:51:13","slug":"3-reasons-no-political-party-ivf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/3-reasons-no-political-party-ivf\/","title":{"rendered":"Three reasons why no political party should be the &#8216;party for IVF&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In a recent town-hall meeting in Georgia, former President Donald Trump solidified his commitment to promoting in-vitro fertilization (IVF), calling the Republican party &#8220;the party for IVF.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really are the party for IVF,\u201d Trump said. \u201cWe want fertilization, and it\u2019s all the way, and the Democrats tried to attack us on it, and we\u2019re out there on IVF even more than them. So we\u2019re totally in favor.\u201d For their part, Democratic lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/four-things-know-senate-struggle-ivf\/\">have already attempted to create a &#8220;right&#8221; to IVF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But Trump&#8217;s positive endorsement of IVF is unsettling to many. Though the desire for a new life is good \u2014 and every life has dignity and value, regardless of the means of conception \u2014 IVF is fraught with a number of ethical and moral problems that cannot be overlooked.<\/p>\n<p>To be truly pro-life recognizes that millions of people have been created <em>and then discarded<\/em> or <em>indefinitely frozen<\/em> through the IVF process. These human beings were and are <em>just as valuable<\/em> as those who are born after being created through IVF procedures.<\/p>\n<p>There are three important reasons why <em>no<\/em> political party should be the &#8220;party for IVF.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is grievous and inexcusable. Christians can\u2019t go along to get along with this. We must say what is true. <\/p>\n<p>This is the truth. Human lives are destroyed by IVF. IVF commodifies human life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Science agrees that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/science-confirms-that-human-life-begins-at-fertilization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">life starts at the moment of fertilization<\/a> when the sperm fertilizes the egg, creating an embryo. Within the IVF process, those human beings are treated as commodities almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Each IVF cycle typically results in the creation of <em>many<\/em> embryos. According to research published in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rbmojournal.com\/article\/S1472-6483%2818%2930598-4\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reproductive Biomedicine Online<\/a>, over 2.5 million IVF cycles are performed every year, but of those, only 500,000 babies are born annually. The embryos (human beings) that are not implanted in the mother&#8217;s womb are either frozen and stored, or destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>In deciding which embryos to keep, doctors will often weed out those with undesirable characteristics or perceived flaws, keeping only those designated as the <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/verilymag.com\/2016\/10\/ivf-artificial-insemination-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/verilymag.com\/2016\/10\/ivf-artificial-insemination-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">est<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/verilymag.com\/2016\/10\/ivf-artificial-insemination-infertility\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> quality<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensiblesurrogacy.com\/quality-grade-of-embryos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">classification system<\/a> is used to &#8220;grade&#8221; the embryos, as only those embryos deemed worthy make it onto the &#8220;next round&#8221; \u2014 a process that is not only eugenic, but completely strips the preborn human of dignity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CzFuNYHIEs0?si=DVidfl_Ay8w1zMrP\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. IVF results in the destruction of human life<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While IVF supporters hail the creation of new life, they are discounting the millions of preborn children who are created and then stored or discarded. In fact, IVF destroys embryos at a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-destroys-embryos-higher-rate-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>higher rate than abortion<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the fundamental ethical issue of IVF,\u201d explained Dr. Lauren Rubal, a board-certified OB\/GYN and integrative medicine physician with a subspecialty in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CzFuNYHIEs0&amp;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Action video<\/a>: \u201cthe destruction or abandonment of human life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recent study showed that the number of embryos needed to optimize cumulative live birth rates was nine,\u201d Rubal explained. \u201cThis means that up to eight embryos may not survive or will be frozen or destroyed. So effectively, you are choosing the death of nine to get the life of one. Even though you have good intentions \u2014 you just want life \u2014 you\u2019re also choosing all of the consequences that follow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While some pro-life individuals who support IVF claim that there may be a more &#8220;ethical&#8221; way to use this technology by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ivfconceptions.com\/guide-to-natural-cycle-ivf\/\">harvesting one egg and transferring one embryo to the uterus<\/a>\u00a0(with a much lower success rate than that of traditional IVF), &#8220;advancements in genetic testing offer the potential to screen embryos for chromosomal abnormalities before transfer, further increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.&#8221; In other words, genetic screening may still play a eugenic role in selecting the embryo most likely to &#8220;succeed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-2255107\/1-7-million-embryos-created-IVF-thrown-away-just-7-cent-lead-pregnancy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Research shows<\/a> that between 1991 and 2012, more than 3 million embryos were created through traditional IVF, but only<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">235,480<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were successfully implanted; an astounding <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>93%<\/strong> of the embryos created through IVF <strong>never survived to birth<\/strong>. While some failed to implant, others were donated to research or stored indefinitely \u2014 and nearly 1.7 million embryos were simply <em>thrown away<\/em>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a pro-life person is horrified at the idea of humans being aborted and thrown into a medical waste bin, <em>shouldn&#8217;t the disposal of these humans created via IVF be disturbing to the conscience as well<\/em>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are also over one million embryos currently frozen in the U.S. \u2014 many in a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-tragedy-lost-embryos-frozen-decades\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of limbo<\/a>, as their parents <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ivf-woman-48-embryos-guilt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aren&#8217;t sure what to do with them<\/a>. Some have been in this condition for decades.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. IVF poses significant health risks to the mother and child<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Live Action video above, Dr. Rubal explains that women who conceive through IVF have twice the risk of life-threatening complications during their pregnancies, including a 26% increase in the risk of preterm birth, which can lead to long-term complications with the child. Children conceived through IVF have a 40% increase in chance of birth defects and double the chance of stillbirth. Other known risks for children born via IVF include a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-potential-link-ivf-childhood-leukemia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher risk<\/a> of the following: childhood leukemia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3650450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">low birth weight<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19648588\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher blood pressure<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/18689849\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hormonal imbalances<\/a>\u00a0and advanced bone age,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3650450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cardiovascular issues<\/a>\u00a0and cerebral palsy,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/21658904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism spectrum disorder<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-specialist-warns-that-ivf-is-creating-infertile-children\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infertility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Being pro-life means caring for <em>all<\/em> human lives.\u00a0Both political parties should stand for protecting all human lives from the moment of conception \u2014 including those embryos created via IVF. While a person\u2019s desire to have a biological child is normal and understandable, the IVF process destroys countless innocent lives and causes far too much damage for the ends to justify the means.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span class=\"s1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/resist-pressure-to-dispense-the-abortion-pill\/\"><b><i>Urge Walmart, Costco,
