Within the 100-foot zone, it also creates a zone 15 feet from the entrance to the facility where protesters cannot congregate or demonstrate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lone \u201cno\u201d vote came from Angela Whitfield-Calloway, who told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/detroit\/2024\/10\/01\/city-council-oks-protest-buffer-zones-at-health-care-facilities\/75471717007\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detroit Free Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: &#8220;It doesn\u2019t feel right for me, personally, having experienced three daughters being arrested and seeing one on TV and all three incarcerated for protesting, for being in a place where they were told they shouldn\u2019t have been. I&#8217;m just uncomfortable with us even edging toward interfering with people&#8217;s rights to assemble and to pass out information.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arian Fisher, a Detroit resident, wondered why the right to protest seemed to be protected for everyone except pro-lifers. \u201cWhen else does our fair city restrict the right to protest, even when it makes people uncomfortable?\u201d she said to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgedetroit.com\/health-care-facility-protesters-have-new-restrictions-in-detroit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bridge Detroit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI was a sidewalk counselor in Chicago where they have a buffer zone law. It wasn\u2019t infrequent to see a woman dragged into the clinic against her will, and there was nothing we could do to help her.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/buffer-zone-victory-kentucky\/\"><em>Pro-life sidewalk counselors gain victory as Kentucky judge blocks buffer zone law<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most pro-life demonstrations like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/approach-sidewalk-outreach-saves-babies-moms-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">40 Days for Life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/police-officers-abortion-business-pray-save-twins\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">peaceful<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, prayerful protests and non-violence. But that hasn\u2019t stopped abortion supporters from claiming otherwise. Many at a city council meeting discussing the ordinance claimed that the pro-lifers were from \u201cout of state\u201d and were \u201cwhite males\u201d who were \u201cscreaming\u201d at \u201cgirls.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf all sidewalk counselors are so calm and thoughtful and lovely to be around, why are we talking about a buffer zone?\u201d said Shelly Miller, a local supporter of the ordinance, according to Bridge Detroit. \u201cWe\u2019re talking about a buffer zone because that is not how they behave.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe approach the moms. We accompany them. We talk to them,\u201d said pro-life sidewalk counselor Monica Miller, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wdet.org\/2024\/10\/01\/detroit-advances-ordinance-setting-protest-restrictions-at-health-clinics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WDET<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe show them love and compassion and give them real material help so that they will turn away from their decision to abort their children.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Adam Kuehner, pastor of Southfield Reformed Presbyterian Church, pointed out, the buffer zone is likely to have unintended consequences of people having to speak louder to be heard.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2000, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill v. Colorado <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that buffer zone laws did not impinge upon the freedom of protesters. However, in 2014, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-the-win-in-mccullen-v-coakley-and-why-it-was-so-rightly-obvious\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McCullen v. Coakley<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision ruled that preventing the exchange of ideas on public streets and sidewalks <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">does<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infringe on the First Amendment rights of both protesters and the women who might wish to speak with sidewalk counselors. The decision, however, left <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill v. Colorado<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> intact. In 2023, a case was brought asking the Court to review the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hill<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> decision, but was denied
