Here&#8217;s why."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) received a powerful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.evangelicalfellowship.ca\/si\/Prostitution\/EFC-Submission-to-UN-CEDAW-Sept-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brief<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada\u2019s Centre for Faith and Public Life (\u201cCFPL\u201d) on September 9, 2024, which documented the disproportionate effect of euthanasia and assisted suicide on women with disabilities in Canada.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to their report, a change in Canada\u2019s Medical Assistance in Dying law (MAiD) in 2021 made assisted suicide and euthanasia available to Canadians on the basis of disability or chronic illness, instead of only impending death. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability advocates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.media\/justice\/healthcare\/canadians-with-disabilities-remain-locked-in-legislated-poverty-and-many-want-to-die\/#:~:text=Treatable%20conditions%20are%20offered%20MAiD%20instead%20of%20healthcare&amp;text=Of%20that%2C%2059%20per%20cent,than%20men%2C%E2%80%9D%20Carr%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">charge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that since then, Canadian authorities may be deliberately pursuing a strategy of providing such subpar benefits to disabled persons, that it keeps them in a constant state of poverty. For<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> many disabled people, committing suicide with the help of the state and medical doctors seems like their only way to escape financial strain.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CFPL report to the United Nations focused on women with disabilities who are more at risk than men.\u00a0 According to their analysis, that while women are naturally more likely than men to suffer from a disability, the utilization of MAID by women in Canada exceeds that disparity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/acog-terminology-medically-incoherent-false\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>ACOG\u2019s pro-abortion terminology has become \u2018medically incoherent\u2019 and \u2018legally false\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disabled women are seeking euthanasia and assisted suicide in Canada at a higher rate than disabled men. According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/files.evangelicalfellowship.ca\/si\/Prostitution\/EFC-Submission-to-UN-CEDAW-Sept-2024.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, the overall number of MAiD deaths [was] relatively equal between men and women (51.4% and 48.6%, respectively).\u201d But when disability became a permitted reason to access MAID, \u201cthe ratio of women to men [was] significantly skewed: 59% of those who died by MAiD were women and 41% were men.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been studies <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34253440\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that women seek euthanasia and assisted suicide more often than men because of their more sensitive nature and desire not to \u201cbecome a burden\u201d on their family members and community. These studies appear to support the CFPL\u2019s analysis.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other reasons for a disproportionate utilization by women include more <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.media\/justice\/healthcare\/canadians-with-disabilities-remain-locked-in-legislated-poverty-and-many-want-to-die\/#:~:text=Treatable%20conditions%20are%20offered%20MAiD%20instead%20of%20healthcare&amp;text=Of%20that%2C%2059%20per%20cent,than%20men%2C%E2%80%9D%20Carr%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cgaslighting\u201d by medical providers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and less stability in securing long-term family physicians than men. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ethicists-doctors-against-assisted-suicide-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indifference<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Canada\u2019s poor and disabled population utilizing MAID has been growing, even by ethicists, who reasoned in 2023, that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople can make their own determination about whether their lives are worth living, and we should respect that.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the executive vice president of Inclusion Canada, Krista Carr, in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ricochet.media\/justice\/healthcare\/canadians-with-disabilities-remain-locked-in-legislated-poverty-and-many-want-to-die\/#:~:text=Treatable%20conditions%20are%20offered%20MAiD%20instead%20of%20healthcare&amp;text=Of%20that%2C%2059%20per%20cent,than%20men%2C%E2%80%9D%20Carr%20said.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ricochet Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cSituations have gotten so desperate that they are wondering if there\u2019s any other choice.
