{"id":318822,"date":"2024-09-18T14:49:19","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T19:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=318822"},"modified":"2024-09-19T01:21:35","modified_gmt":"2024-09-19T06:21:35","slug":"gilmore-girls-aborted-baby-married-30s-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gilmore-girls-aborted-baby-married-30s-kids\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Gilmore Girls&#8217; star aborted baby in her 30s while married, because she never wanted kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In her new book, &#8216;The Third Gilmore Girl,&#8217; actress Kelly Bishop admits that she had an abortion when she was in her 30s \u2014 because she didn&#8217;t want to have children, and it didn&#8217;t occur to her that she could get pregnant unexpectedly.<\/p>\n<p>The now-80-year-old Bishop, star of &#8220;Gilmore Girls&#8221; and &#8220;Dirty Dancing,&#8221; in which part of the plot includes an illegal abortion, told <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/kelly-bishop-talks-very-private-abortion-in-new-memoir-exclusive-8709960\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">People<\/a> that even as a young girl she knew she didn&#8217;t want to have children. &#8220;I meant it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;And that was fine. I mean, that&#8217;s a choice.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She&#8217;s right. It is a choice to not have children \u2014 but it&#8217;s never an acceptable choice to kill a child once that child has been conceived.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FcZ6IOjNbi0?si=1qKSWkOciUAHytXj\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Bishop said it was &#8220;such a relief&#8221; to have the &#8220;option&#8221; of killing her preborn child \u2014 lending credence to the idea that if the option doesn&#8217;t exist, many women <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fertility-data-lifesaving-impact-pro-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wouldn&#8217;t abort<\/a>. &#8220;Of course,&#8221; she continued, &#8220;it never occurred to me that I would accidentally get pregnant. That never crossed my mind. But the fact that that was available and legal, it was just a relief.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bishop was in her 30s when she had the abortion, so it&#8217;s shocking for her to explain that she didn&#8217;t realize she could experience an unplanned pregnancy. Countless young women today likely feel the same, wrongly believing that &#8220;safe sex&#8221; using a condom will stop them from becoming pregnant. The only ways to truly avoid pregnancy are abstinence or sterilization. Sexual education, however, largely promotes the false notion of &#8220;safe sex&#8221; over abstinence to millions of teenagers who then believe they won&#8217;t get pregnant if they use birth control&#8230; and therefore jump into sex before marriage.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop, who became pregnant while married, said she wasn&#8217;t planning to include her abortion in her memoir because she hasn&#8217;t experienced &#8220;any feeling of shame and wrongdoing&#8221; over it. But ultimately, she decided to share because &#8220;the Supreme Court got rid of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And more and more women \u2014 actresses, but other celebrity-type women \u2014 were coming out of my generation, saying, &#8216;I had an abortion. I had an abortion.'&#8221; Maybe Bishop didn&#8217;t want to feel left out.<\/p>\n<p>But despite her flippant attitude towards her baby and her claim that she doesn&#8217;t feel any shame, many celebrities who have shared their abortion stories have. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/britney-spears-excruciating-experience-abortion-pills\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Britney Spears<\/a> called her experience with the abortion pill &#8220;excruciating&#8221; and said that her baby&#8217;s father, Justin Timberlake, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/britney-spears-justin-timberlake-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pressured<\/a> her into doing it. Her life doesn&#8217;t appear to have been the same since.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/chilli-tlc-shares-story-abortion-regret-broke-spirit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TLC band member Chilli<\/a> also shared her abortion regret saying the abortion was what her boyfriend wanted and she &#8220;didn&#8217;t have the support&#8221; to have the baby. \u201cIt messed me up,\u201d she said through tears. \u201cI don\u2019t know; It just, it broke my spirit. [\u2026] I feel like I became kind of like not my strong self anymore. I felt like I gave in and I broke to what someone else wanted. And I would break down and I would just cry because I wasn\u2019t a mommy. I cried almost every day for almost nine years and then I was caught up, I had to have a baby.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bishop said another reason she decided to share her abortion story was &#8220;so that young women of today get a sense of where we were then.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Fifty years or so ago, when Bishop had the abortion, abortion had just been legalized in the United States and was climbing to an all-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/185274\/number-of-legal-abortions-in-the-us-since-2000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">high<\/a> of 1,429,000 abortions in 1990. In the 1970s, when Bishop had her abortion, ultrasound technology <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/32071-history-of-fetal-ultrasound.html\">was only beginning to become widely available in America<\/a>, and it was obviously not as clear in its displayed imagery as it is today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IssB-cz47g4?si=htnQdF3UJMlW7P05\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Today, women have the technology at their fingertips that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=S-lQOooYAs8&amp;t=5s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">proves<\/a> the humanity and personhood of preborn children and exposes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abortionprocedures.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how those children are killed<\/a> during each type of abortion procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Any shame women feel over an abortion is not because of pro-life laws.
