{"id":318759,"date":"2024-09-16T14:40:36","date_gmt":"2024-09-16T19:40:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=318759"},"modified":"2024-09-15T23:41:48","modified_gmt":"2024-09-16T04:41:48","slug":"assisted-dying-traveling-die-popularity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-dying-traveling-die-popularity\/","title":{"rendered":"As more states seek to loosen assisted dying rules, traveling to die grows in popularity"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With increased euthanasia legislation across the U.S., as well as the weakening of residency requirements for some of these states, a new form of \u201cmedical\u201d tourism is on the rise: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/aid-in-dying-travel-medical-tourism-vermont-oregon-state-legislation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">traveling to die<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May 2023, Vermont lifted its residency requirement for assisted suicide, which resulted in nonresidents flocking to the state to end their lives. Non-residents comprised <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/article\/aid-in-dying-travel-medical-tourism-vermont-oregon-state-legislation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">almost 25% of all assisted suicide cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Vermont according to data collected between May 2023 and June 2024. Meanwhile, in November 2023, the Vermont Department of Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wcax.com\/2023\/11\/29\/report-indicates-fewer-vermonters-opting-hospice-care\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the number of people with terminal illnesses taking advantage of hospice care has begun to decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In July 2023, the first state to legalize assisted suicide \u2013 Oregon \u2013 became the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/03\/30\/1089647368\/oregon-physician-assisted-death-state-residents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second state<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind Vermont to remove its residency requirements, opening the doors for nonresidents seeking euthanasia to take advantage of their laws. As Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-21-oregon-single-reason\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in Oregon at least 23 people are known to have traveled there specifically for assisted suicide \u2013 with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/independent-film-company-buys-the-rights-to-brittany-maynards-assisted-suicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brittany Maynard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being the most notorious example. But the number of out-of-state residents who traveled for assisted suicide is likely higher, as Oregon does not collect residency status as part of the application process. In 2024, the state of Oregon reported a troubling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wweek.com\/news\/2024\/03\/20\/more-than-one-person-per-day-chose-death-with-dignity-in-oregon-last-year\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21% increase<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in overall assisted suicide cases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year 2024 saw an increase in assisted suicide legislation as well, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/02\/09\/medically-assisted-death-states\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19 states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bringing the topic to the legislative floor. Of those states, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdow.org\/stopassistedsuicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delaware\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> legislation passed both chambers; the bill is currently on the governor\u2019s desk awaiting a signature, with no indication of what he plans to do. Assisted suicide is currently legal in 10 U.S. states: Oregon, Maine, California, New Mexico, Colorado, Montana, Washington, Hawaii, New Jersey, Washington, D.C. and Vermont.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/social-scientist-health-care-serial-killers\/\"><em>Social scientist warns how assisted dying policies enable \u2018healthcare serial killers\u2019<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If euthanasia activists succeed in pushing assisted suicide laws in states around the country, assisted suicide tourism within the U.S. could expand even further. New Jersey\u2019s residency requirement may be short-lived, as it currently faces a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2023\/9\/21\/23882892\/assisted-suicide-residency-requirements-in-the-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">federal lawsuit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brought by the same pro-euthanasia group that sued Vermont and Oregon for their residency requirements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ethicists-doctors-against-assisted-suicide-canada\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slippery slope<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pattern is all too common in countries that legalize the intentional killing of human beings. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Netherlands was one of the first countries to legalize physician-assisted suicide in 2002, under strict regulations and limited circumstances. In the two decades since, however, assisted suicide laws have become so lax that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dutch-group-allow-anyone-legally-assisted-suicide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">activists are now pushing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anyone <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to be allowed to help another person commit suicide, <em>for any reason<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although often touted as a matter of individual freedom, the grim truth is that euthanasia saves governments money. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is simply more cost-effective to put someone to death than continue to support their expensive end-of-life medical care for an unpredictable length of time. To boot, these states also get the final tourism dollars of the patient\u2019s life as they wait the 15 days between requesting fatal medication and receiving it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The financial piece of the puzzle is quite clear in countries around the world where euthanasia is well-established. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Belgium, the head of a major insurance company has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christian.org.uk\/news\/belgium-insurance-boss-backs-euthanasia-for-elderly-to-save-money\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said the quiet part out loud<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, touting the cost savings for putting people to death. Similarly, the perverse monetary incentives of assisted suicide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/normalizing-assisted-suicide-will-lead-to-a-duty-to-die\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">haven\u2019t gone unnoticed in the UK<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the legalization of euthanasia is currently being considered. Canada has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/256634\/assisted-suicide-will-bring-about-reduction-in-health-care-spending-report-claims\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently calculated these grisly savings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, putting an actual dollar amount on the voluntary death of its citizens, claiming it will save the healthcare system somewhere between $34.7 and $136.8 million per year. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the U.S., the state of California has already done the same <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usnews.com\/news\/articles\/2016-03-21\/in-california-government-to-pick-up-the-tab-for-death-with-dignity\">morbid\u00a0<\/a><\/span><span><span style=\"color: #0000ee;\"><span style=\"caret-color: #0000ee;\"><u>calculations<\/u><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
