{"id":318677,"date":"2024-09-14T11:16:26","date_gmt":"2024-09-14T16:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=318677"},"modified":"2024-09-13T15:54:12","modified_gmt":"2024-09-13T20:54:12","slug":"warring-billboards-amarillo-sanctuary-city","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/warring-billboards-amarillo-sanctuary-city\/","title":{"rendered":"Warring billboards as Amarillo votes whether to become a sanctuary city for the unborn"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A competing pair of billboards on I-40 and I-27 in Amarillo, Texas, has caught the eye of local residents in recent weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the billboards, funded by the extremist \u201cShout Your Abortion\u201d campaign, aims to tell women they still have \u201coptions\u201d if they are pregnant in a pro-life state like Texas \u2014 but the only option they mean is <em>abortion<\/em>. In response, pro-life <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projectdestinyamarillo.com\/The-Ordinance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Project Destiny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has put up its own billboards, urging people to protect preborn babies and to turn up to vote this November.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think this is a perfect time for Amarillo citizens to get out and speak, and speak their convictions and speak what they\u2019re about and speak up for the little ones that didn\u2019t get a chance to speak,\u201d Cassie Greene of Project Destiny told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel10.com\/2024\/09\/06\/amarillo-pro-choice-pro-life-groups-launch-billboard-campaign-across-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the war of the billboards promotes differing views on abortion, they\u2019re also persuading voters about a new ballot measure. This November, Amarillo voters will decide whether the city should become a Sanctuary City for the Unborn.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The proposal was brought before the mayor and Amarillo City Council earlier this year but, in a stunning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/betrayed-amarillo-sanctuary-unborn-vote-mayor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reversal of promises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the mayor and council rejected the ordinance. Council member Tom Scherlen expressed concern that the ordinance may affect the local economy, deterring business development in the area and hurting businesses that provide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-travel-new-ground-zero-post-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion travel<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/story\/news\/politics\/government\/2024\/06\/12\/amarillo-council-rejects-anti-abortion-ordinance-could-go-to-voters\/74067247007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statesman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hillary-chelsea-clinton-propaganda-texas-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Hillary and Chelsea Clinton team up to produce propaganda against Texas\u2019 abortion law<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this, the ordinance appears to have wide citizen support as a citizen initiative petition of over 10,000 signatures \u2014 nearly twice the required amount \u2014 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amarillo-citizens-signatures-sanctuary-unborn-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forced the ordinance onto the November ballot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Live Action News has reported.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projectdestinyamarillo.com\/files\/amarillo-scftu-ordinance12-29-20234.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed measure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would declare Amarillo a Sanctuary City for the Unborn, which would prohibit the manufacture, possession, or distribution of abortion-causing drugs. In addition, it prohibits assisting anyone in obtaining an abortion, the transportation or disposal of the remains of aborted children, and abortion trafficking \u2014 that is, traveling in or through the city to obtain an abortion anywhere. Like Texas\u2019 heartbeat law, the ordinance is intended to be enforced via private civil action while excluding the mothers of aborted babies as potential targets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Project Destiny\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/projectdestinyamarillo.com\/The-Ordinance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the proposed ordinance \u201c[does] something that current law in Texas does not and would make Amarillo one of the safest cities in Texas for pregnant mothers and their unborn children.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion supporters responding to robust pro-life laws and ordinances want to push back against a \u201cculture of fear and secrecy and shame\u201d that surrounds taking the life of a preborn baby. As such, Lindsay London of the Amarillo Reproductive Freedom Alliance is pushing back on efforts to protect preborn babies in the town with efforts like the organization\u2019s billboard declaring \u201cPregnancy is optional.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is an ordinance that seeks to penalize anyone who helps another person obtain an abortion, including a state where the procedure is legal, so our hope is that all voters educate themselves about Proposition A learn about the harmful impacts of it,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet as Mark Lee Dickson, founder of Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel10.com\/2024\/09\/06\/amarillo-pro-choice-pro-life-groups-launch-billboard-campaign-across-city\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KFDA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cUnborn human beings are made in the image of God and their lives have worth and value. They\u2019re worthy of being protected and right now we have some very strong laws in the state of Texas, but there\u2019s still work to be done.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If Amarillo passes the measure, it would become the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/img1.wsimg.com\/blobby\/go\/4b2b0d23-d175-4bfb-a8d9-71911a3ad695\/downloads\/SCFTU_%20CITIES%20%26%20COUNTIES%20OUTLAWING%20ABORTION%20LI.pdf?ver=1720027073137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">70th city<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the country to do so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
