You can see how our Live Action News team has fact-checked and debunked many of the most prominently featured narratives <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/category\/fact-checks\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, polls featuring vague and skewed wording continue to paint a confusing and illogical picture about the American public&#8217;s feelings about abortion at various gestational ages, after certain developmental milestones, and for various reasons. Commonly, even people who consider themselves &#8220;pro-life&#8221; say that they would allow abortion for reasons of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother (despite the fact that intentional killing is not medically necessary).<\/p>\n<p>According to a new report, these &#8220;exceptions&#8221; continue to make up a very small percentage of the total number of abortions in the U.S. every year. Most U.S. abortions are <strong><em>elective<\/em><\/strong> abortion procedures, done for reasons other than these commonly accepted &#8220;exceptions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Research Group Claims 95% of Abortions Are Elective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI) Senior Research Associate Tessa Cox told Live Action News that the &#8220;official state data&#8221; the organization has <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/fact-sheet-reasons-for-abortion\/\">reviewed<\/a> in the past &#8220;shows that the vast majority of abortions, more than 95%, are for elective or unspecified reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Less than 5% of abortions are performed because the mother or unborn baby has a physical health condition or because the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest,&#8221; Out of those states, the former \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\">special affiliate<\/a>\u201d to Planned Parenthood found:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>11 states ask whether the abortion was performed because of a threat to the patient&#8217;s health or life.<\/li>\n<li>8 states ask whether the abortion was performed because of rape or incest.<\/li>\n<li>15 states ask whether the abortion was performed because of a diagnosed fetal abnormality.<\/li>\n<li>9 states ask whether the abortion was performed for other reasons (e.g. the patient&#8217;s economic or familial circumstances).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For this report, Live Action News looked at the states which collect abortion data by <em>reason,<\/em> and found the following:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alaska (<a href=\"https:\/\/health.alaska.gov\/dph\/VitalStats\/Documents\/PDFs\/2023%20Alaska%20Induced%20Terminations%20Annual%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> The state does not seek reasons for abortion generally, but asks the question, &#8220;Was This Termination Elected Due to the Detection of a Congenital Anomaly?&#8221; and &#8220;Type of Congenital Anomaly.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Less than 1% of abortions committed in Alaska in 2022 were for &#8220;congenital anomalies&#8221; and none were reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/health.alaska.gov\/dph\/VitalStats\/Documents\/PDFs\/2023%20Alaska%20Induced%20Terminations%20Annual%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>,<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319066\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319066\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-319066\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Alaska-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg\" alt=\"Alaska abortion by reason 2023\" width=\"700\" height=\"958\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Alaska-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg 610w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Alaska-abortion-by-reason-2023-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Alaska-abortion-by-reason-2023-511x700.jpg 511w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Alaska-abortion-by-reason-2023-500x684.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319066\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alaska abortion by reason 2023<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Arizona (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.azdhs.gov\/documents\/preparedness\/public-health-statistics\/abortions\/2022-arizona-abortion-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>8,963 abortions committed because &#8220;abortion is elective&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>90 for fetal health\/medical considerations.<\/li>\n<li>40 for domestic violence<\/li>\n<li>40 for sexual assault.<\/li>\n<li>2,611 declined to specify a reason<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2,442 abortions were listed in the &#8220;other&#8221; reasons category. These included 1,581 who &#8220;didn&#8217;t want to have children,&#8221; 150 who felt\u00a0 &#8220;unprepared&#8221; or &#8220;not ready&#8221; for children, 70 called it a &#8220;timing issue,&#8221; 150 gave &#8220;financial reasons,&#8221; 324 referred to &#8220;personal\/emotional health,&#8221; 10 said the &#8220;father doesn&#8217;t want child\/lack of support&#8221; and more. Additional reasons can be seen in the image below. This is a slight decrease from the 74% committed for elective reasons in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-abortions-common-exceptions-fraction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Out of the 59,901 recorded in 2023, nearly 55,000 babies aborted for &#8220;elective reasons&#8221; in Florida were killed during the first trimester. In the second trimester, 5,109 were aborted for &#8220;elective reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Less than .3% were for &#8220;Life Endangering Physical Condition (251),&#8221; and less than 1% were for either &#8220;incest (11)&#8221; or &#8220;rape (107)&#8221; or &#8220;fetal anomaly (141)&#8221; combined.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319068\" style=\"width: 1153px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319068\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319068\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg\" alt=\"Florida abortion by reason 2023\" width=\"1143\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg 1143w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023-300x114.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023-700x266.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023-768x292.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Florida-abortion-by-reason-2023-500x190.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1143px) 100vw, 1143px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319068\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Florida abortion by reason 2023<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Hawaii (<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-hawaii-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">year reported<\/a>)<\/strong> &#8211; While Guttmacher lists the state as tracking abortions for reasons of &#8220;fetal anomaly,&#8221; CLI has <a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-hawaii-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that state reports are lagging, and they have been unable to obtain a copy for several years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Illinois (<a href=\"https:\/\/dph.illinois.gov\/data-statistics\/vital-statistics\/abortion-statistics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0While Guttmacher claimed that the state was tracking &#8220;other&#8221; reasons for abortions, the current published year does not contain this information. Older reporting forms <a href=\"https:\/\/dph.illinois.gov\/data-statistics\/vital-statistics\/abortion-statistics\/archived-reports.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicate<\/a> the state was gathering some data, asking whether the abortion was the &#8220;patient&#8217;s request&#8221; or &#8220;other.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Louisiana (<a href=\"https:\/\/ldh.la.gov\/page\/schs-itop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> The state <a href=\"https:\/\/ldh.la.gov\/assets\/oph\/Center-PHI\/ITOPs_by_Reason_Stated_2022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that out of 4,570 abortions recorded by reason, 1,350 (30%) were for &#8220;mental health of mother,&#8221; 103 (2.25%) for &#8220;physical health of mother,&#8221; less than 1% for &#8220;risk of fetal deformity (10)&#8221; and &#8220;rape or incest (21).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, 3,086 (66%) were categorized as &#8220;other&#8221; which includes elective.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319074\" style=\"width: 1308px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319074\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319074\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg\" alt=\"Louisiana abortion by reason 2022\" width=\"1298\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg 1298w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022-300x125.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022-700x291.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022-768x319.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Louisiana-abortion-by-reason-2022-500x208.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1298px) 100vw, 1298px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319074\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Louisiana abortion by reason 2022<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Minnesota (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/data\/mchs\/pubs\/abrpt\/docs\/2022abrpt-revised.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a012,175 abortions were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/data\/mchs\/pubs\/abrpt\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">committed<\/a> in the state that year. Due women selecting more than one reason, the data shows 14,768 abortions by reason.<\/p>\n<p>This means that less than 1% were for rape or incest, while nearly 50% were because the client did not &#8220;want&#8221; children. Nearly 26% refused to specify a reason.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, slightly more than 11% involved the emotional (7%) or physical health (4%) of the mother.<\/p>\n<p>In the &#8220;other&#8221; category, women listed education and career, relationships, and feeling unready for children as reasons for seeking abortions.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319077\" style=\"width: 1365px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319077\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319077\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg\" alt=\"Minnesota abortion by reason 2022\" width=\"1355\" height=\"555\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg 1355w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022-700x287.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022-768x315.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Minnesota-abortion-by-reason-2022-500x205.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1355px) 100vw, 1355px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Minnesota abortion by reason 2022<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-abortions-common-exceptions-fraction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previous<\/a> Live Action News report found that less than 1% of total reported abortions in Minnesota (10,136) in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.state.mn.us\/data\/mchs\/pubs\/abrpt\/docs\/2021abrpt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>\u00a0were committed for rape (44) or incest (11), while 54% of abortions were committed because the mother \u201cd[id] not want children at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nebraska (<a href=\"https:\/\/datanexus-dhhs.ne.gov\/views\/AbortionTableauReportv2\/DashboardA?%3Aembed=y&amp;%3Aiid=1&amp;%3AisGuestRedirectFromVizportal=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/govdocs.nebraska.gov\/epubs\/H8320\/S001.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/dhhs.ne.gov\/Pages\/Nebraska-Public-Health-Atlas.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recorded<\/a> 2,325 abortions committed that year. Because women may have selected more than one reason, the total reasons listed came to 2,684.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, nearly 7% of women claimed &#8220;contraceptive failure&#8221; led to their abortions, while over 12% admitted that a failure to use contraception was their reason for abortion. In addition, 42% of women listed &#8220;socio-economic&#8221; reasons. Nearly 23% &#8220;declined to answer&#8221; or give a reason.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 1% of abortions were committed due to &#8220;maternal life endangered,&#8221; &#8220;emergency situation,&#8221; or &#8220;fetal anomaly.&#8221; These reasons combined totaled less than 2% of these reasons given. Sexual assault (.63%) and incest (.07%) were also less than 1% of abortions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Maternal physical health&#8221; accounted for 5% and &#8220;mental health&#8221; was recorded at over 8%.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319079\" style=\"width: 1177px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319079\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319079\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg\" alt=\"Nebraska abortion by reason 2023\" width=\"1167\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023.jpg 1167w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023-300x156.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023-700x365.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023-768x400.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Nebraska-abortion-by-reason-2023-500x260.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1167px) 100vw, 1167px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nebraska abortion by reason 2023<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>New Jersey (<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/abortion-reporting-new-jersey-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">year unknown<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> According to Guttmacher, NJ tracks abortions committed for reasons of fetal abnormalities; however, the data was not publicly available.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New York (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.ny.gov\/statistics\/vital_statistics\/2021\/#abor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unknown<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> Guttmacher claims the state tracks abortions for reasons of the health and life of the mother or fetal abnormalities; however, this data is not among the state&#8217;s public information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Dakota (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.nd.gov\/sites\/www\/files\/documents\/DOH%20Legacy\/Vital\/ITOP%202022.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.nd.gov\/sites\/www\/files\/documents\/DOH%20Legacy\/Vital\/ITOP%202023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>, the state&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.nd.gov\/vital\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vital records<\/a> department revealed that abortions had decreased substantially, but the state was unable to publish a report. Previous years&#8217; reports did not show abortions by reasons, despite Guttmacher claiming they did require the data.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oklahoma (<a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/content\/dam\/ok\/en\/health\/health2\/aem-documents\/data-and-statistics\/center-for-health-statistics\/induces-termination-of-pregnancy\/2023%20AbortionReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0In <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/content\/dam\/ok\/en\/health\/health2\/aem-documents\/data-and-statistics\/center-for-health-statistics\/induces-termination-of-pregnancy\/2022%20AbortionReport.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>, there were <em>more than<\/em> 2,160 answers by reason, because the individual could provide multiple answers.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Shockingly, and despite the abortion industry claim that sex selective abortions do not occur, there were seven women who selected that they wanted to abort because &#8220;Mother wanted a child from a different sex.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Lack of support from the husband or father as well as lack of finances for the woman was also among the many reasons listed.<\/li>\n<li>Tragically, 424 women claimed it was their husband or partner who wanted the abortion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In 2023, the state <a href=\"https:\/\/oklahoma.gov\/health\/health-education\/data-and-statistics\/center-for-health-statistics\/health-care-information\/induced-termination-of-pregnancy.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a> zero abortions were recorded.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_319120\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-319120\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-319120\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Oklahoma-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg\" alt=\"Oklahoma abortion by reason 2022\" width=\"660\" height=\"862\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Oklahoma-abortion-by-reason-2022.jpg 660w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Oklahoma-abortion-by-reason-2022-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Oklahoma-abortion-by-reason-2022-536x700.jpg 536w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Oklahoma-abortion-by-reason-2022-500x653.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-319120\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oklahoma abortion by reason 2022<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>South Dakota (<a href=\"https:\/\/doh.sd.gov\/media\/d3pdokup\/2022-sd-induced-abortions-report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a>) &#8211;<\/strong> The data showed that between 2018-2022, rape and incest accounted for between &lt;1% up to as high as 3% of abortions in the state. The state recorded just four (4) abortions in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Abortions for &#8220;contraceptive failure&#8221; totaled 471 in Nebraska in <a href=\"https:\/\/dhhs.ne.gov\/Abortion%20Reports\/2020%20Statistical%20Report%20of%20Abortions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>\u00a0but fell to 180 by <a href=\"https:\/\/datanexus-dhhs.ne.gov\/views\/AbortionTableauReportv2\/DashboardA?%3Aembed=y&amp;%3Aiid=1&amp;%3AisGuestRedirectFromVizportal=y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023<\/a>.
