{"id":317168,"date":"2024-08-15T10:48:02","date_gmt":"2024-08-15T15:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=317168"},"modified":"2024-08-14T20:08:46","modified_gmt":"2024-08-15T01:08:46","slug":"uk-disability-groups-speak-out-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/uk-disability-groups-speak-out-suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"UK disability groups speak out against proposal to legalize assisted suicide"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/disability-rights-groups-protest-against-introducing-assisted-suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Right to Life UK<\/a>) Disability rights groups are making their voices heard as Lord Falconer attempts to change the law on assisted suicide for the seventh time.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Falconer\u2019s Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults Bill was drawn second in the House of Lords ballot\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/press-release-bills-on-abortion-complications-reporting-and-support-for-infant-and-parents-information-to-be-introduced-to-house-of-lords#:~:text=A%20Bill%20to,in%20the%20ballot.\">last month<\/a>, giving him another chance to legalise assisted suicide despite his numerous previous failures.<\/p>\n<p>Private Members\u2019 Bills rarely become law and are even less likely to become law when they have started in the House of Lords, as Lord Falconer\u2019s Bill has. They are, however, an opportunity to raise the profile of a particular issue and can therefore indirectly influence Government-backed legislation.<\/p>\n<p>However, major disability rights groups continue to oppose the legalisation of assisted suicide with Disabled People Against Cuts (DPAC) recently holding a\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/dpac.uk.net\/2024\/06\/disabled-people-demand-thursday-18th-july-12noon-parliament-square\/#:~:text=the%20name.-,Thursday%2018th%20July,-%2C%2012%20noon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protest<\/a>\u00a0in Parliament Square. Among other demands of the new Labour Government, DPAC called on the Government to reject calls to introduce assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>A separate disability rights group, Not Dead Yet UK,\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/ndyuk.blogspot.com\/2024\/07\/disabled-campaigners-warning-about-lord.html#:~:text=As%20a%20group,they%20are%20suicidal.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explains<\/a>\u00a0that it is \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d about the Falconer Bill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLike many disabled people, we are conscious that attempts to build legalised suicide into healthcare can be profoundly discriminatory \u2013 if a non-disabled person wants to die, their doctor does not give them the means to kill themselves\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want the same care and respect to be given to terminally ill people if they are suicidal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ:<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-death-woman-mental-delayed-father-spain\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Assisted death of woman with \u2018mental disorders\u2019 delayed as her father pleads for her life<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instead of promoting assisted suicide, the group\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/ndyuk.blogspot.com\/2024\/07\/disabled-campaigners-warning-about-lord.html#:~:text=Rather%20than%20legalising,like%20a%20burden.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">advocates<\/a>\u00a0for improved access to palliative care and tackling the causes of a perceived lack of dignity and feelings of being a burden.<\/p>\n<p>The group is also highly critical of proposals to introduce assisted suicide, arguing that proposed safeguards will fail to protect disabled people from being targeted. \u201c[I]n reality\u201d Not Dead Yet UK\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/ndyuk.blogspot.com\/2024\/07\/disabled-campaigners-warning-about-lord.html#:~:text=in%20reality%2C%20these%20safeguards%20are%20virtually%20impossible%20to%20implement%20effectively.%20Even%20the%20idea%20that%20doctors%20can%20accurately%20predict%20when%20a%20person%20has%20six%20months%20left%20to%20live%20does%20not%20reflect%20reality.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, \u201cthese safeguards are virtually impossible to implement effectively. Even the idea that doctors can accurately predict when a person has six months left to live does not reflect reality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>No major disability advocate groups in the UK \u2013 including Disability Rights UK, Scope and Not Dead Yet UK \u2013 support a change in the law to introduce assisted suicide or euthanasia.<\/p>\n<p>Polling commissioned by SCOPE\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politicshome.com\/members\/article\/new-research-majority-of-disabled-people-fear-change-to-assisted-suicide-law#:~:text=The%20poll%20of,to%20their%20disability\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">showed<\/a>\u00a0that the majority of people with disabilities (64%) \u2013 including nearly three-quarters (72%) of young disabled people \u2013 are concerned about moves to legalise assisted suicide. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of people with disabilities who were concerned about a change in the law were worried that pressure would be put on disabled people to end their lives prematurely.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cIt should come as no surprise that no major disability advocate groups in the UK support a change in the law to introduce assisted suicide\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLord Falconer\u2019s assisted suicide bill will be his seventh parliamentary attempt to change the law on assisted suicide since 2009. That\u2019s almost once every two years for the past 15 years\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth Houses of Parliament have consistently rejected his proposed changes to assisted suicide legislation. Examples of assisted suicide in action in other jurisdictions should continue to function as a dire warning to our elected representatives who should continue to reject Lord Falconer\u2019s proposals\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the most shocking findings from assisted suicide data in Oregon is that the end-of-life concerns of those who end their lives by assisted suicide are generally\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/righttolife.org.uk\/news\/assisted-suicide-numbers-highest-ever-as-oregon-sees-32-increase-in-a-single-year#:~:text=Among%20the%20end,loss%20of%20dignity.\">not medical<\/a>. Autonomy, dignity and activities that make life enjoyable are all issues that are not treated by death. Sadly, nearly half of those who choose an assisted death report concerns about being a burden on family and friends. We would be naive to think these same issues would not manifest in England and Wales.
