The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is not an unbiased organization, yet it is regularly cited as a medical authority by the media. ACOG has been accurately defined<\/a>\u00a0by the\u00a0American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists<\/a>\u00a0(AAPLOG) as an \u201cabortion advocacy<\/a>\u201d organization which is \u201cno longer objective on the abortion issue” and \u201cdoes not adequately<\/a> represent its thousands of members.\u201d<\/p>\n

This article in Live Action News’ Top Myths DEBUNKED series will disprove several myths about ACOG, revealing that the organization is entirely in support of abortion.<\/p>\n

Myth #1: “ACOG is impartial on the issue of abortion.”\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth: <\/em><\/strong>ACOG has referred for, advocated for, and promoted abortion for decades.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOG claims<\/a> to be the \u201cpremier professional membership organization for obstetrician-gynecologists,\u201d but it is far from unbiased where abortion is concerned.\u00a0Currently, the group is at the\u00a0forefront<\/a>\u00a0of efforts to\u00a0expand abortion<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 in particular, the abortion pill (mifepristone).<\/p>\n

The organization\u2019s official support for unrestricted abortion on-demand has become more obvious over time. ACOG now refers<\/a> to abortion (which is the intentional killing of a human preborn child) as “health care.” In addition, a\u00a02023 op-ed<\/a> written by leaders of ACOG and The Society of Family Planning (SFP) published<\/a>\u00a0in The Washington Post stated that abortion \u201cmust be available without restrictions, without limitations and without barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myth #2: “ACOG’s goal has always been to help women.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> ACOG’s goal, from nearly the beginning, has been population control.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOG, founded<\/a> in 1951 as the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology and renamed in May of 1956, began to shift toward abortion advocacy less than a decade<\/a> after its founding, and was taken over by those involved with Planned Parenthood<\/a>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the \u201cendemically racist<\/a>\u201d\u00a0Population Council<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0American Eugenics Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n

These organizations did not have in mind a goal to improve women’s health; they were interested in population control.<\/p>\n

In 1960, ACOG fellow Dr. Alan F. Guttmacher, a board member of Planned Parenthood who took the\u00a0helm<\/a>\u00a0as president in 1962, told media that an ACOG committee had begun a\u00a0fact-finding expedition<\/em>\u00a0to liberalize abortion laws. Then, by\u00a01968<\/a>, its leadership had\u00a0moved<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0approve<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0American Law Institute\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Model Penal Code to decriminalize\u00a0abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By then, ACOG\u00a0was\u00a0led mostly by men connected<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0eugenics<\/a>-based organizations.<\/p>\n

Read more details here<\/a> about how ACOG officials and Dr. Guttmacher<\/a> sought to redefine \u201cconception\u201d and \u201cpregnancy,\u201d and how ACOG officials worked to change the definition of the beginning of life<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0fertilization<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0implantation<\/em> (in the uterus) so that they could redefine contraception<\/em> for population control<\/em> purposes.<\/p>\n

Myth #3: “ACOG only updates its terminology for scientific accuracy.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> ACOG changes its terminology to more easily promote a pro-abortion agenda to the public.<\/em><\/p>\n

“The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) uses clinically accurate language when discussing abortion. We encourage people writing about reproductive health to use language that is medically appropriate, clinically accurate, and without bias,” ACOG claims<\/a> online.<\/p>\n

But ACOG has worked tirelessly to influence<\/a> the positions of its members regarding abortion, regularly changing<\/a>\u00a0its own long-held messaging and definitions on when life begins (fertilization),\u00a0fetal heartbeat<\/a> and other developmental markers, as well as later abortion<\/a> \u2014 depending on its goal at the time. Below are some examples:<\/p>\n

“Late-term abortion<\/em>“<\/strong> – ACOG claims in its abortion language guide<\/a> for the media that ‘late-term abortion<\/a>‘ “has no clinical or medical significance.” Yet, pro-abortion medical doctors and media outlets have been using the phrase<\/a> ‘late-term abortion’ for decades.<\/p>\n

“Surgery\/Surgical abortion<\/em>“<\/strong> – ACOG tells media, “The abortion procedure is not a surgery,” suggesting that “[r]eferring to it as a procedure is clinically accurate.” Yet, Planned Parenthood states<\/a> that “In-clinic abortions are sometimes called surgical abortions” and then uses<\/a> the term ‘surgical abortion’ in several<\/a> places<\/a> online. AbortionFinder.org<\/a> and several abortion providers \u2014 like the University of California San Francisco<\/a> (UCSF), which trains abortionists \u2014\u00a0also refer to surgical abortion on their websites.<\/p>\n

“Dismemberment abortion<\/em>“<\/strong> – ACOG’s guide says “referring to” a “dilation and evacuation” (D&E) abortion as \u201cdismemberment\u201d is “intentional use of inflammatory” language. But in testimony in the Stenberg v. Carhart<\/em> Supreme Court case<\/a>, abortionist LeRoy Carhart described<\/a> abortion procedures as dismembering<\/em>, describing the D&E procedure by stating, “My normal course would be to dismember that extremity and then go back and try to take the fetus out either foot first or skull first…” The rest of his testimony graphically describes the process of how he “grasps” and “pull[s] down” on fetal body parts, “rotating to dismember the shoulder or the hip or whatever it would be” until the entirety of the child’s body is torn apart. He said,\u00a0\u201c[\u2026]when you do a dismemberment D&E, you have a tray full of pieces<\/em>, and it\u2019s impossible to take a total inventory to know that you\u2019ve taken out all the tissue\u2026\u201d (emphasis added). Carhart also admitted that when the dismemberment process begins, the preborn child is still alive.<\/p>\n

“Heartbeat<\/em>“<\/strong> – As the popularity of “heartbeat laws” (laws that protect preborn humans upon detectable heartbeat) has grown, ACOG has not only openly opposed these laws, but has gone through multiple revisions in how it now chooses to use terminology surrounding “heartbeats.” Back in 2015, an ACOG bulletin on early miscarriage<\/a> used the term “heartbeat.” Even as recently as 2018<\/a>, “heartbeat” seemed innocuous enough for ACOG to use. Since then, however, ACOG and the abortion industry have attempted to downplay<\/a> the embryonic heartbeat, acting as if a “heartbeat” can only come from a fully formed, four-chambered heart; this is entirely untrue<\/a>. Instead, ACOG now insists<\/a>\u00a0upon using terms like \u201cembryonic pulsing<\/a>,\u201d \u201cfetal pole cardiac activity<\/a>\u201d \u201cpulsing cells<\/a>\u201d and even \u201cvibrations.\u201d<\/p>\n

“Baby\/unborn child\/preborn child<\/em>“<\/strong> – ACOG’s media guide states that when discussing abortion<\/em> with the public, the media should avoid using terms like \u201cbaby,\u201d \u201cunborn child,\u201d or \u201cpreborn child.\u201d When a woman doesn’t want her child, ACOG doesn’t want that child to be called<\/em> a child. However, when she wants the child, it’s a “baby.” This can be seen in ACOG’s own publication, “Your Pregnancy and Childbirth, 7th edition,” which openly uses the term “baby” at the earliest stages of pregnancy and for each week thereafter. The “Having a Baby” page of ACOG’s website<\/a> mentions the term “baby” 40 times in answering questions about the prenatal and postnatal periods. Apparently, “wantedness” alters the use of terminology.<\/p>\n

Myth #4: “If you’re a member of ACOG, you probably perform abortions.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> Less than 25% of ACOG’s membership in 2019 was willing to provide abortions.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOG\u2019s\u00a02022 annual report<\/a> listed a membership of 61,727 individuals, with over $27 million collected in dues and fees, along with over $14 million in \u201cgrants, contracts, or other,\u201d that same year<\/a>. And yet, in\u00a02019, ACOG\u2019s Green Journal<\/a> published a study<\/a> authored by abortionist Daniel Grossman and other abortion industry insiders, utilizing a cross-sectional 2016-17 survey<\/a> from a national sample of ACOG Fellows. As the LA Times noted<\/a>, \u201cfewer than 1 in 4 were willing and able to perform [an abortion] themselves,” and \u201cAmong the doctors who answered questions about the procedure, 1 in 3 cited personal, religious or moral reasons for not providing abortion services.”<\/p>\n

A Green Journal commentary published<\/a> in 2022 stated that “abortion provision is not a routine part of most general ob-gyn practices; currently, only 14\u201324% of ob-gyns perform abortions.” And a 2023 <\/a>report issued by the pro-abortion<\/a> Kaiser<\/a> Family Foundation<\/a> (KFF) claimed<\/a> that “Nearly one in five (18%) office-based OBGYNs nationally say that they are providing abortion services” since the Dobbs<\/em> ruling overturned Roe v. Wade<\/em>. The Foundation added that \u201cNationally, 14% of OBGYNs say they provide in-person medication abortions, but only 5% say they provide telehealth medication abortions.” (KFF is funded<\/a> by multiple pro-abortion donors<\/a>, including the Gates and Buffett Foundations.)<\/p>\n

Older surveys found<\/a> similar results.<\/p>\n

Myth #5: “ACOG is ‘pro-choice’ but doesn’t oppose those with a different viewpoint.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> ACOG is not impartial, and has attempted to “fact check” and even censor those with whom it disagrees.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOG\u2019s abortion advocacy has led the organization to censor<\/a> pro-life doctors. And despite its clear and obvious pro-abortion bias, ACOG has been asked<\/a> to play the role of fact-checker<\/a>\u00a0against<\/a>\u00a0pro-life organizations<\/a> (including Live Action<\/a>). It has aided in attacks against pro-life pregnancy help centers<\/a>\u00a0(PRCs<\/a>). It has been called upon to discredit \u201cabortion pill reversal (APR<\/a>).\u201d And it has opposed state pro-life laws.<\/p>\n

ACOG\u2019s website<\/a> calls the killing of a preborn baby \u201cessential<\/a>\u201d and claims to be \u201ccommitted to protecting and increasing access to abortion\u201d along with \u201coppos[ing] any effort that impedes access to abortion care.\u201d One of ACOG’s intentions is to \u201cintegrate abortion as a component of mainstream medical care<\/strong>, and to oppose and overturn efforts restricting access to abortion\u201d (emphasis added).<\/p>\n

If a doctor or organization does not fully embrace abortion without restraint, then that doctor or organization may become the target of a smear campaign from this powerful organization, which has never operated with actual science or respect for human dignity in mind.<\/p>\n

ACOG supports and partners with the abortion industry; it has issued numerous releases, training documents<\/a>, practice bulletins, and committee opinions supporting abortion. ACOG\u2019s \u201cGuide for Patients Seeking Abortion<\/a>\u201d even links to websites such as AbortionFinder.org, the National Abortion Federation, and Planned Parenthood \u2014 which committed<\/a> nearly 400,000 abortions last year alone. ACOG has \u201cpartnered<\/a>\u201d with many abortion<\/a>– and eugenics<\/a>-focused groups<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Myth #6: “ACOG wants abortion to be ‘rare’.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> ACOG’s goal is to expand abortion, and it is working toward that end.<\/em><\/p>\n

The American people were told by pro-abortion politicians for decades that they believed abortion should be “rare,” but this view is no longer popular. Instead of finding ways to assist pregnant women to keep their babies, ACOG advocates for more OBGYNs to be trained to commit abortion.<\/p>\n

When a shortage of abortion providers occurred in the 1990s, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and ACOG stepped up<\/a> to \u201cconvene[] a symposium to address the shortage,\u201d and more recently, representatives from ACOG District IX took part in California’s Future of Abortion Council<\/a>, an effort to expand abortion in the state. ACOG even advocates<\/a> for family physicians and non-physicians to become abortion providers, so that abortion can become more common.<\/p>\n

This, of course, aligns with the group’s long-standing goal of population control.<\/p>\n

In addition, the organization encourages<\/a> its members to \u201cadvocate<\/a>\u201d for abortion \u201cin your state\u201d \u2014 urging members to \u201c[s]top Florida abortion bans\u201d and to participate in other political efforts to protect abortion, including “ballot initiatives,” which are currently attempting to codify abortion as a “right” in state constitutions. ACOG partnered with a group in a \u2018get out the vote\u2019 effort related to the \u201cinitiatives affecting abortion access on the ballot in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana, and Vermont in 2022,\u201d and \u201caided in the passage of abortion shield laws that help solidify New York as a national access state for abortion care.\u201d<\/p>\n

ACOG\u2019s\u00a02022 annual report<\/a> contains nearly three dozen mentions of abortion and its abortion advocacy. Its political action group,\u00a0ACOG Action, heavily promotes abortion<\/a>, with a desire to expand abortion access and force federal taxpayers to fund<\/a> abortion by pushing to end the pro-life Hyde Amendment (which was put in place to prevent taxpayer funding of abortion). One of its \u201cpolicy priorities<\/a>\u201d for 2024 is to \u201c[s]upport, defend, and expand access to and availability of comprehensive evidence-based obstetric and gynecologic care, including abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Myth #7: “ACOG is not influenced by ‘Big Abortion’.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Truth:<\/em><\/strong> ACOG has become part of Big Abortion, and is funded by those invested in abortion’s expansion.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACOG has been funded by pro-abortion groups like Ibis<\/a> Reproductive Health<\/a> (which has been funded<\/a> by abortion pill manufacturer Danco Laboratories\u00a0and<\/a> Danco investor the Packard Foundation; read<\/a> more here<\/a> about Ibis),\u00a0the Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation<\/a>, and the Bill and Melinda<\/a> Gates Foundation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

ACOG has\u00a0funded<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health<\/a>, where abortionists are trained, even promoting Bixby\u2019s\u00a0Ryan Residency Programs<\/a> on its website. The ACOG Foundation, a recipient<\/a>\u00a0of taxpayer dollars which\u00a0claims<\/a>\u00a0to fund \u201cprograms and activities that further the interests of ACOG members,\u201d\u00a0has\u00a0granted<\/a>\u00a0(2023-24) Planned Parenthood of California Central Coast $20,000. The Foundation is\u00a0seeking proposals<\/a> for grants that will \u201cadvance public education initiatives in a post-Dobbs environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
