New York City\u2019s pension systems own over $1.32 billion in total shares of the companies,&#8221; the release read.<\/p>\n<p>The NYC comptroller\u2019s request comes after Democratic lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.bloomberglaw.com\/health-law-and-business\/top-us-pharmacies-pressed-on-abortion-pill-plans-by-senators\">called on<\/a> the retail companies to begin dispensing the drug. In January 2023, the FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-retail-pharmacies-abortion-pills-prescription\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> its decision to roll back REMS safety regulations and allow retail pharmacies to dispense the abortion drug mifepristone (Mifeprex) after completing a certification process.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I issued warnings to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Walmart?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Walmart<\/a>, CostCo, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kroger?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@kroger<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Albertsons?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Albertsons<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/McKesson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@McKesson<\/a> about abortion medication.<\/p>\n<p>These pharmacy giants MUST immediately start dispensing mifepristone to avoid putting both investor confidence and women&#39;s reproductive health at risk. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1oLDemYJN3\">https:\/\/t.co\/1oLDemYJN3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Office of New York City Comptroller Brad Lander (@NYCComptroller) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NYCComptroller\/status\/1813666737969336573?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 17, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Letters to Pharmacy Giants from Lander<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Lander&#8217;s letters urged CEOs at the various chains to &#8220;immediately take the necessary steps to receive certification to dispense the medication mifepristone in states where it is legal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Following pharmacy industry leaders, and competitors, CVS and Walgreens, [these various pharmacy giants have] the opportunity to provide access to abortion medication through its pharmacies. Planned Parenthood has <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PPGNYVotesPAC\/status\/1400194689303728138\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">endorsed<\/a> Lander in his campaigns, and he in turn has <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bradlander\/status\/1201852955495931906\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> his supporters to donate to the abortion organization, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bradlander\/status\/990976838083203072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling himself<\/a> a &#8220;member of the Planned Parenthood family.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prior to being elected Comptroller in 2021, Lander spent 12 years in the City Council, where he co-founded the Council\u2019s Progressive Caucus and won transformative changes to expand workers\u2019 rights, secure tenant protections, create affordable housing, integrate and strengthen the district\u2019s public schools, and make streets safer,&#8221; the <a href=\"https:\/\/comptroller.nyc.gov\/about\/about-brad-lander\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Comptroller&#8217;s website<\/a>\u00a0stated.<\/p>\n<p>Lander&#8217;s wife, Meg Barnett Lander was previously employed by the corporation for nine years, serving in roles ranging from Vice President of Strategic Initiatives to Chief Strategy Officer and General Counsel, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nonprofitnewyork.org\/about-us\/our-team\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online bio<\/a> stated. In a statement <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bradlander\/status\/1208501547379900418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> to Twitter\/X, Lander expressed pride about his wife&#8217;s employment with Planned Parenthood, writing, &#8220;So proud of Meg, of course (as I always am: In addition to being an amazing mom &amp; unreasonably supportive partner, she\u2019s also General Counsel at Planned Parenthood of Greater NY).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a Council Member, Lander <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bradlander\/status\/787758641294282759\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">joined<\/a> Planned Parenthood of New York City in 2016 to <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171110033254\/https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-new-york-city\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-new-york-city-celebrates-turning-100-years-strong-at-city-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">celebrate<\/a> the &#8220;opening of the first clinic by Margaret Sanger in 1916 in Brownsville, Brooklyn.&#8221; His statement (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171110033254\/https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/planned-parenthood-new-york-city\/newsroom\/planned-parenthood-of-new-york-city-celebrates-turning-100-years-strong-at-city-hall\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> to a now-archived page from Planned Parenthood&#8217;s website) read in part, &#8220;I congratulate them on a century of courage and conviction in fighting for more informed and safer reproductive health, and look forward to another century of progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Sanger, of course, was the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-systemic-racism-white-supremacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">white supremacist<\/a>&#8221; It is manufactured by <a href=\"https:\/\/saynsumthn.wordpress.com\/2023\/04\/15\/breaking-doj-fines-abortion-pill-manufacturer-danco-nearly-one-million-under-false-claims-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Danco Laboratories<\/a>; the generic version is manufactured by <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/generic-abortion-pill-genbiopro-nationwide-market\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GenBioPro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Under a safety system called REMS, the deadly drug was only permitted to be dispensed by a certified prescriber (doctor or clinician). But in April of <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-letter-permits-abortion-pill-by-mail-during-the-covid-19\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, under the guise of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-covid-19-expand-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, the Biden administration FDA <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pharmacy-partnerships-emerge-ship-abortion-pills-mail\/\">expanded<\/a> the REMS and <em>temporarily<\/em> enabled the limited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-pharmacy-operates-used-car-dealership\/\">mail-order pharmacy<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-pharmacy-first-us-ship-abortion-pill\/\">distribution<\/a> of mifepristone (the abortion pill).<\/p>\n<p>In December 2021, the Biden FDA further <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weakened<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/risk-evaluation-and-mitigation-strategies-rems\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">REMS<\/a>\u00a0by eliminating the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-removes-abortion-pill-safety-protocols-drug\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-person dispensing requirement<\/a>\u00a0and enabling the abortion pill to be <em>permanently<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-permanently-loosens-abortion-pill-safety-measure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shipped by mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Then, in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/walgreens-cvs-sell-drugs-intentionally-kill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 2023<\/a>, the Biden FDA announced it would also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-retail-pharmacies-abortion-pills-prescription\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allow retail pharmacies to dispense the drug<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FDA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/DAN_Pharmacy_Agreement_1.2023.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pharmacy Agreement<\/a>\u00a0for the abortion pill states, \u201cPharmacies must designate an authorized representative to carry out the certification process and oversee implementation and compliance with the Mifepristone REMS Program on behalf of the pharmacy. Healthcare settings, such as medical offices, clinics, and hospitals, where mifepristone will be dispensed by or under the supervision of a certified prescriber in the Mifepristone REMS Program do not require pharmacy certification.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pharmacy is required to, among other things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Report any patient deaths to the prescriber\u2026 and remind the prescriber of their obligation to report the deaths to Danco Laboratories, LLC.<\/li>\n<li>Not distribute, transfer, loan, or sell mifepristone except to certified prescribers or other locations of the pharmacy.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain records of Prescriber Agreement Forms, dispensing and shipping, and all processes and procedures including compliance with those processes and procedures.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain the identity of Mifeprex patients and prescribers as confidential and protected from disclosure except to the extent necessary for dispensing under this REMS or as necessary for payment and\/or insurance.<\/li>\n<li>Train all relevant staff on the mifepristone REMS program requirements.<\/li>\n<li>Comply with audits carried out by the mifepristone sponsors or a third party acting on behalf of the mifepristone sponsors to ensure that all processes and procedures are in place and are being followed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Live Action News\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/5-problems-study-pharmacists-support-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a> reported pharmacists&#8217; lack of understanding about the abortion pill and its risks, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-retail-pharmacies-abortion-pills-prescription\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">revealing<\/a> that some pharmacists may not be sufficiently knowledgeable to properly advise women of the potential risks associated with abortion-inducing drugs; they also may lack understanding regarding the reporting of child sexual abuse.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Which Pharmacies Are Certified?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Pharmacy giants Walgreens and CVS <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/walgreens-cvs-sell-drugs-intentionally-kill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> that they had finalized the pharmacy dispensing certification process this past spring.<\/p>\n<p>In March 2024, the CVS Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cvshealth.com\/news\/pharmacy\/mifepristone-dispensing-at-cvs-pharmacy-faq.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> claimed the drug store chain had &#8220;begun <a class=\"enpr__link--inline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cvshealth.com\/news\/pharmacy\/mifepristone-dispensing-at-cvs-pharmacy.html\" data-analytics-name=\"filling prescriptions for mifepristone\" data-linkvariant=\"emphasized\" data-iconposition=\"right\" data-category=\"internal\">filling prescriptions for mifepristone<\/a> in select states where legally permissible.&#8221; At the same time, Walgreens stated it was beginning a &#8220;phased rollout in select locations&#8221; of the drug. In June 2024, Walgreens <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walgreensbootsalliance.com\/walgreens-mifepristone-resource-hub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated its website<\/a> to note that it is now dispensing the abortion pill in &#8220;select locations in more than 20 states consistent with federal and state laws.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Walgreens has now been certified with Danco Laboratories which oversees U.S. manufacturing of mifepristone, while CVS has been certified with the generic manufacturer, GenBioPro.<\/p>\n<p>Additional \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pharmacy-dispensing-abortion-pill-begun\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certified pharmacies<\/a>\u201d who agreed to be publicly named have been <a href=\"https:\/\/genbiopro.com\/roster\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> on GenBioPro&#8217;s website. That data equated to\u00a0<strong>642,700<\/strong>\u00a0chemical (abortion pill) abortions in 2023. This translates to an abortion pill count of\u00a0<strong>53,558<\/strong>\u00a0monthly,\u00a0<strong>1,761<\/strong>\u00a0daily,\u00a0<strong>73<\/strong> hourly, and one <strong>every 49 seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-mifepristone-medical-termination-pregnancy-through-ten-weeks-gestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">latest published<\/a> data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-abortion-pill-6-million-preborn-2000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FDA<\/a> revealed that from 2000 through the end of December 2022, \u201capproximately 5.9 million women\u201d used the abortion pill mifepristone in the U.S. for \u201cmedical termination of pregnancy.\u201d In addition to these chemical abortion deaths, the FDA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/164331\/download?attachment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reports 32 deaths<\/a>* \u201cassociated with mifepristone\u201d since its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-abortion-pill-timeline-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approval<\/a> in 2000.<\/p>\n<h5>*The FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in patients who took mifepristone. As of December 31, 2022, there were 32 reports of deaths in patients associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several fatal cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis). The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient. A summary report of adverse events that reflects data through December 31, 2022, is\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/164331\/download?attachment\">here<\/a>. The FDA has reviewed this information and did not identify any new safety signals.
