Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013\u00a0 the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study which purported to compare the safety and efficacy of chemical abortions obtained either in-person (following an ultrasound) or through the mail (using the so-called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/no-test-abortion-pill-protocol-access-safety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no-test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d protocol, in which no in-person doctor visit occurs, and no lab work or ultrasounds are performed). It concluded that \u201cmedication abortion following no-test telehealth screening and mailing of medications&#8221; has \u201ca low prevalence of adverse events.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how reliable is this study? What does the data in it really show? And how does this study compare to other, similar research?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Study details<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The no-test group initially consisted of 228 women, while the in-person group included 238 women. Of these, a number of participants did not provide follow-up data, leaving a final participant number of 204 for the no-test group and 220 for the in-person group. The follow-up period covered by the study was four weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are fairly small sample sizes, and four weeks is a relatively short follow-up period.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michael New, who is an assistant professor of practice at the Busch School of Business at the Catholic University of America and a senior associate scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, told Live Action News that these are significant weaknesses of the study.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere are reasons to be skeptical of the findings of the recent JAMA study that compares risks of telehealth abortion to in-person abortion,\u201d Dr. New said. \u201cFirst, the researchers received no data from 8 percent of the people who enrolled in the study. Secondly, they only tracked outcomes for four weeks. It is possible that [additional] adverse effects of telehealth abortion might have emerged, had the study tracked participants over a longer timespan.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. New concluded: \u201cIt is my opinion that a study that utilized a larger sample size and tracked recipients for a longer period of time would have more clearly demonstrated the risks involved with obtaining chemical abortions without in-person medical supervision.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cLow prevalence of adverse events\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study claims to have observed few adverse events, but its definition of what constitutes an \u201cadverse event\u201d is fairly narrow. &#8220;Serious adverse events&#8221; as defined by this study include \u201covernight hospitalization, blood transfusion, and emergency surgery\u201d \u2013 but <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emergency room or urgent care visits which did not result in overnight inpatient admission, although these <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> been included in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(21)00091-3\/fulltext\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-complications-uk-mirror-us-data\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">investigations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the outcomes of the no-test protocol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study reports only seven (7) total \u201cserious adverse events,\u201d experienced by six different individuals \u2013 three in the no-test group and three in the in-person group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One participant required emergency surgery for an ectopic pregnancy. The study does not appear to report whether this woman had been placed in the no-test group or the in-person group. But, given that the in-person group underwent ultrasounds prior to being given the abortion pill, it is far more likely that she was in the no-test group. Barring incompetence on the part of the ultrasound technician, her condition would have been discovered, and her eligibility to participate in this study would have been revoked, if she had been in the in-person group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking the abortion pill when one has an ectopic pregnancy is extremely dangerous and can even prove <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gruesome-india-case-dangers-no-test-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fatal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the mother. Since the no-test protocol was put into wide practice, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/irish-woman-undiagnosed-ectopic-pregnancy-abortion-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women requiring emergency care after taking the abortion pill while experiencing ectopic pregnancies have been reported, and even the abortion industry has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alert-er-docs-undiagnosed-ectopic-abortion-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">admitted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this can, and will, occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the number of women experiencing adverse events (as narrowly defined by this particular study) was the same for both groups, study authors conclude that the no-test abortion pill protocol is equally as safe as requiring abortion pill customers to see a doctor. However, the woman with an undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy was placed in a situation which significantly increased the odds of her death, calling into question whether both methods are equally \u201csafe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Comparison to similar studies<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other investigations into the \u201csafety\u201d of the no-test protocol in both the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/telabortion-abortion-pill-study-increased-complications-er\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United States<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-complications-uk-mirror-us-data\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Kingdom<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have reported much higher complication rates \u2013 around 6% in both cases. However, as noted previously, these inquiries included emergency room and urgent care visits in their definitions of \u201cadverse events.\u201d They also had significantly larger sample sizes (1,157 and over 200,000, respectively).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">label information<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for Mifeprex (the abortion pill) indicates that between 2.9 and 4.6 percent of women who take the drug will end up in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/media-blame-pro-life-abortion-pill-er\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emergency room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the drug\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DANCO_MedGuide_ENG_Web.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> admits that up to 7% of women who take the abortion pill will require subsequent surgery to stop bleeding or to complete their abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yet, this JAMA study reports a \u201cserious adverse event\u201d rate of only 1.1%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Obvious bias and an admitted agenda<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At best, this study is an extreme outlier among existing research on this topic. At worst, it is a gross misrepresentation of reality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But why would medical scientists \u2013 who are presumed to be objective by most average people \u2013 wish to distort the facts about abortion industry practices and the safety of the abortion pill itself? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One need look no further than the language of this study for answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Study authors not only describe telehealth and no-test abortion as \u201csafe and effective,\u201d but also describe the \u201cexpansion\u201d of this practice as \u201curgently needed\u201d in order \u201cto overcome at least some of the logistical and geographic barriers to accessing abortion.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, not only are study authors <em>not neutral<\/em> on the issue of abortion, but they actually wish to <em>promote<\/em> abortion and <em>increase<\/em> the number of children who are killed by it. What\u2019s more, they openly state their wish to use their data in the political arena to advocate for abortion, writing: \u201cStudy findings may also be used to refute ongoing efforts to further regulate and restrict access to medication abortion[.]\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In sum, this study amounts to little more than abortion activism cloaked beneath a veneer of science. The fact that such an agenda is being advanced by the once-respectable Journal of the American Medical Association is by no means surprising &#8212; after all, this particular study is just one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/rape-related-pregnancy-research-questionable\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">several<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-texas-pro-life-infant-deaths-mislead\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">efforts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the publication to promote prenatal homicide and weaponize medicine for propagandic purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On June 24 \u2013 the two-year anniversary of the overturning of Roe v.
