She was understandably scared, because she had previously experienced a miscarriage on Mother\u2019s Day in 2022. It has been established that a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous miscarriage can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4611958\/#b2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the risk of premature birth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in future pregnancies, and that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">premature births have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/baby-born-24-weeks-early-weighing-less-than-2lbs-defied-all-odds-to-survive\/ar-BB1ozjyL?item=flightsprg-tipsubsc-v1a%2F&amp;apiversion=v2&amp;noservercache=1&amp;domshim=1&amp;renderwebcomponents=1&amp;wcseo=1&amp;batchservertelemetry=1&amp;noservertelemetry=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Turner arrived at the hospital on January 24<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, everything happened quickly, and she was rushed off for an emergency c-section, not realizing her daughter had been delivered when she woke up. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking back, she <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/20\/us-news\/long-island-premature-baby-shyne-graham-born-less-than-2-pounds-goes-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recalled<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u201cI remember waking up from surgery in a fog, and people were saying, \u2018Congratulations.\u2019 I said, \u2018For what?\u2019\u201d Turner recalled. \u201cI was shell shocked.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1744998265908520%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/choices-pregnancy-resource-center-pro-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Choices Pregnancy Resource Center and the true support pro-lifers offer women<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Babies born at 24 weeks are among the youngest who can survive a premature birth, with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the record currently being <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-baby-history-youngest-preemie-ever-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21 weeks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For those who do make it to the 24-week mark, like Shyne, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the survival rate increases by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/baby\/premature-baby-survival-rate#24-weeks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60-70%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Of course, there are more risks of complications at this stage. Both Turner and her daughter had their share of infections and complications to battle through, but luckily they were both tough fighters. One of the biggest concerns with babies born this prematurely is that their lungs are not developed yet, so Shyne needed a breathing tube until she could breathe on her own. On top of this, she contracted three infections, including step throat and E. coli. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nyulangone.org\/news\/one-our-youngest-tiniest-graduates-gets-full-fledged-graduation-nyu-langone-hospital-long-island\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posted about Shyne<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the NYU Langone website shared that Turner also \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">suffered from pneumonia, an\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">E. coli<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0infection, and strep throat herself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a touching <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1744998265908520\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">video from ABC7NY<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made after Shyne\u2019s graduation from the NICU, Turner recounted the time immediately following her daughter\u2019s birth, when they weren\u2019t sure she would survive. The medical staff reviewed the complication risks with her and the prognosis. Their 147 days in the NICU weren\u2019t easy, especially the first few weeks when Turner couldn\u2019t even hold her new daughter.
