But a scan at around 22 weeks revealed that Kamerie had stopped growing and her heart rate was dropping.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe sonographer checked her growth and I could tell something was wrong. She said \u2018I\u2019m going to get a doctor\u2019. The doctor said \u2018it\u2019s go time\u2019\u201d, Anitra\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=%22The%20sonographer%20checked%20her%20growth%20and%20I%20could%20tell%20something%20was%20wrong.%20She%20said%20%27I%27m%20going%20to%20get%20a%20doctor%27.%20The%20doctor%20said%20%27it%27s%20go%20time%27.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Kamerie was born by emergency Caesarean section weighing just 1lb 5oz.<\/p>\n<p>Anitra\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=Anitra%20said%3A%20%22We%20didn%27t%20hear%20her%20cry.%20We%20got%20to%20see%20her%20an%20hour%20later%20when%20the%20nurse%20took%20a%20picture.%20She%20had%20a%20head%20full%20of%20dark%20hair.%20All%20I%20could%20see%20was%20her%20ribcage.%20She%20was%20so%20small.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cWe didn\u2019t hear her cry. We got to see her an hour later when the nurse took a picture. She had a head full of dark hair. All I could see was her ribcage. She was so small\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Medics soon discovered that Kamerie had medical problems<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>She was diagnosed with chronic lung disease soon after birth as her lungs were underdeveloped. After two months, Kamerie still was not growing and weighed around 2lbs. Chromosome testing showed that she had 18p deletion, a rare genetic disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Doctors suggested that Kamerie might never walk or talk. Her mother\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=%22It%20was%20a%20waiting%20game%20for%20her.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIt was a waiting game for her\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were buying Build-A-Bear clothes for Kamerie and doll clothes\u201d, she\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=%22We%20were%20buying%20Build%2DA%2DBear%20clothes%20for%20Kamerie%20and%20doll%20clothes.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">added<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Kamerie started gaining weight gradually and was able to go home for the first time after 384 days in hospital. She still weighed less than 10lbs when she came home and had a tracheostomy tube for her breathing and a ventilator.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/premature-newborn-abandoned-texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Premature newborn found abandoned in Texas with umbilical cord still attached<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kamerie is now 21 months old and weighs 17lbs and 5oz, still much smaller than the average weight for her age, which is 24lbs 9oz. She is smaller than her older sister\u2019s dolls and wears 6-9 month old clothes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven now she is so small she doesn\u2019t fit a newborn shoe. She\u2019s still extremely small\u201d, her mother\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=Even%20now%20she%20is%20so%20small%20she%20doesn%27t%20fit%20a%20newborn%20shoe.%20She%27s%20still%20extremely%20small.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, she is able to sit up, crawl and roll, exceeding expectations. She is also undergoing speech therapy and her parents are teaching her sign language to help her communicate.<\/p>\n<p>Anitra\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/health\/other\/our-baby-was-so-small-she-wore-build-a-bear-clothes-and-spent-384-days-in-hospital\/ar-BB1nu2QS?item=fli#:~:text=%22She%27s%20like%20a%20little%20firecracker.%20She%20lets%20you%20know%20when%20she%20doesn%27t%20like%20something.%20She%20loves%20to%20dance.%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0\u201cShe\u2019s like a little firecracker. She lets you know when she doesn\u2019t like something. She loves to dance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Over 30 years since the time limit for abortion was last updated<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although Kamerie\u2019s parents chose not to undergo testing in the womb to find out about their daughter\u2019s genetic disorder, many parents who do find out that their child has a disability tragically choose to abort their unborn child. In 2022, there were\u00a0<a class=\"__mPS2id\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/abortion-statistics-for-england-and-wales-2022\/abortion-statistics-england-and-wales-2022#:~:text=3%2C124%20abortions%20performed%20under%20ground%20E%20in%202022.%20This%20is%20a%20slight%20decrease%20since%202021%2C%20when%20there%20were%203%2C370%20abortions%20performed%20under%20ground%20E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3,124<\/a>\u00a0disability-selective abortions under Ground E in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<p>There have been at least 3,000 abortions in England and Wales due to disability every year since\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/570038\/Updated_2015_complete_tables.xlsx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2014<\/a>. A 2014\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/314006\/data_matching_and_under_reporting_HSA4s_final_230514.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Health review<\/a>\u00a0found evidence that there is significant under-reporting of the number of abortions for some fetal disabilities. These numbers are therefore likely to be significantly higher.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson for Right To Life UK, Catherine Robinson, said \u201cIt is so uplifting to hear that even babies as small as Kamerie can go on to live happy and fulfilled lives at home with their families.
