Wade<\/i> was \u201cegregiously wrong,\u201d \u201cdeeply damaging,\u201d and \u201cmust be overruled.\u201d Many Christians give thanks to God as they reflect on the second anniversary of that historic moment and the stronger protections for unborn children that are now enforceable in <a href=\"https:\/\/sbaprolife.org\/lifesavinglaws\">multiple states<\/a>. Yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2022\/07\/06\/majority-of-public-disapproves-of-supreme-courts-decision-to-overturn-roe-v-wade\/\">some<\/a> who call themselves Christians are disturbed that <i>Roe<\/i> fell. While unfortunate, that is not surprising.<\/p>\n<p>After all, countless churchgoers lived their entire lives under <i>Roe<\/i>\u2019s false claim that abortion is a fundamental right. That message was repeated to them in school and in the media. And though they filled the pews each Sunday, the barrage of abortion lies they heard may have never been countered by a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reasonforlife.org\/sermon\">compelling sermon<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the precious value of unborn children. That must change.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Churchgoers need to be told that children in the womb are loved by God and made in His image. They need to hear the truth that unborn children are among the neighbors we are called to love as ourselves. And they need to learn that elective abortion is a violation of the Ten Commandments\u2019 murder prohibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such teaching has always been critical. Indeed, the Great Commission\u2019s call for us to go and \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew+28%3A19-20&amp;version=NIV\">make disciples<\/a> of all nations\u201d includes Jesus\u2019s instruction that we teach people \u201cto obey everything\u201d that He commanded us. Yet when those commands are controversial, church leaders have often steered clear. When it comes to abortion, the <a href=\"https:\/\/research.lifeway.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Care-Net-Final-Presentation-Report-Revised.pdf\">result<\/a> has been churchgoers turning to the sin of killing their children, often unware that they are falling for one of the devil\u2019s most effective schemes \u201cto steal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=John%2010%3A10&amp;version=NIV\">and kill<\/a> and destroy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Choosing silence over saving lives<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tragedy of an untrained church is magnified by the fall of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Now, after five decades, the Supreme Court has left to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/opinions\/21pdf\/19-1392_6j37.pdf\">the people<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and their elected representatives\u201d to decide whether children in the womb will be brutally killed or protected by law. But instead of seizing the moment to save lives, many churchgoers are wielding their power to leave the most innocent and helpless to suffer death at the hands of abortionists.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We saw this unfold over the past two years as voters in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/California_Proposition_1,_Right_to_Reproductive_Freedom_Amendment_(2022)\">California<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Michigan_Proposal_3,_Right_to_Reproductive_Freedom_Initiative_(2022)\">Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Vermont_Proposal_5,_Right_to_Personal_Reproductive_Autonomy_Amendment_(2022)\">Vermont<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Ohio_Issue_1,_Right_to_Make_Reproductive_Decisions_Including_Abortion_Initiative_(2023)\">Ohio<\/a> decided whether their respective state constitutions should include an explicit right to kill children in the womb. Despite knowing that most in their congregations were about to make a decision for death or life \u2014 for sin or righteousness \u2014 many pastors chose to stay silent rather than equip their congregations to view the issue through a biblical lens. That was a fatal mistake. Each pro-abortion measure passed, likely with the support of many who call themselves Christians.<\/p>\n<p>Consider an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2023\/exit-polls\/ohio\/general\/issue-1\/0\">exit poll<\/a> asking thousands how they voted on Ohio\u2019s abortion ballot measure in 2023. Tragically, it showed that about one in four (24%) of those classified as \u201cWhite born-again or evangelical Christian[s]\u201d decided that the Ohio Constitution should include a right to kill unborn children \u2014 children made in God\u2019s image. In doing so, those voters became complicit in the sin of having \u201chands that shed innocent blood,\u201d a sin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Proverbs+6%3A16-17&amp;version=NASB1995\">the Bible<\/a> says \u201cthe Lord hates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This Ohio exit-poll information seems to corroborate troubling Pew Research Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/politics\/2024\/05\/13\/broad-public-support-for-legal-abortion-persists-2-years-after-dobbs\/\">data<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from this year showing that 25% of \u201cWhite evangelical Protestants\u201d in America believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases. And while the Ohio exit poll did not offer insights regarding other religious demographics, the Pew data indicates that a majority of Catholics (59%), \u201cWhite non-evangelical Protestants\u201d (64%), and \u201cBlack Protestants\u201d (71%) believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-314232\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM-700x319.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"568\" height=\"259\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM-700x319.png 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM-300x137.png 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM-768x350.png 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM-500x228.png 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Screenshot-2024-06-18-at-9.52.21\u202fPM.png 1022w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 568px) 100vw, 568px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This data paints a disturbing picture. Put simply, instead of being the solution to abortion, many self-proclaimed Christians are part of the problem \u2014 choosing death for children who are \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=psalm+139%3A13-14&amp;version=NIV\">fearfully and wonderfully made<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by God. One day, those culpable individuals \u2014 and the pastors who have refused to preach the truth about the precious value and humanity of children in the womb \u2014 may answer to God for that bloodshed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An awakened church<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thankfully, there is still time to repent and change. Those who have participated in abortions by having them, encouraging them, or voting for them, can find forgiveness in Christ. And pastors who have been silent in the face of this evil can confess their shortcoming and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wng.org\/opinions\/pastors-and-the-moral-issue-of-our-age-1698096246\">resolve to preach<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the full counsel of God\u2019s Word no matter the cost.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, it is often easier in the short term to preach only the portions of the Bible that align with prevailing cultural values. But that approach is a disservice to congregations looking to their pastors for truth. It is on the controversial matters \u2014 those points where society\u2019s messages conflict with the Bible\u2019s teachings \u2014 that churchgoers are most likely to be led astray.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That is evident in the abortion context where, two years after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s fall, the confusion in Christian circles remains widespread. As a result, churchgoers continue to sin and children continue to be killed with the blessing of our laws.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you have not heard a sermon about abortion at your church recently, respectfully urge your pastor to preach on the subject. And let\u2019s pray that more pastors will show love to their congregants and unborn neighbors by countering the culture\u2019s lies with God\u2019s truth.
