There are several reasons for this: one is because the reporting of abortion data is not required by federal law; states make their own decisions as to whether they will track and report abortion statistics. Another reason is because there have typically been two main agencies tracking and reporting national abortion data \u2014 the Guttmacher Institute and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention \u2014 and those agencies gather data differently and end up with vastly different counts.<\/p>\n<p>The reporting of abortion data has become no easier since the overturning of the infamous <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> Supreme Court decision two years ago, but Live Action News has summarized the most recent data below. What it reveals is that since the reversal of <em>Roe<\/em>, abortions are rising to numbers we have not seen in over a decade.\u00a0There are also many reasons for<em> this<\/em> \u2014 one of which is the increased incentivizing of abortion by state entities, abortion funds, and even private businesses in the past two years. Another is the Biden administration&#8217;s loosening of safety standards regarding how the abortion pill may be dispensed.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion By the Numbers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Guttmacher 2024 data<\/strong>: Guttmacher\u2019s latest &#8220;underestimated&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3LV6a2cuOKBZ_0GYwOxn2m\">2024 figure<\/a> was <strong>1,038,100<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cclinician-provided\u201d abortions &#8211; which\u00a0<em>doesn\u2019t include<\/em>\u00a0all abortions. This new 2024 figure equates to\u00a0<strong>2,844<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>abortions daily<\/strong>, nearly\u00a0<strong>119<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>per hour<\/strong>, nearly\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>per minute<\/strong>, and slightly more than\u00a0<strong>one every 30 seconds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Guttmacher 2023 data<\/strong>: The Guttmacher Institute recorded 1,037,000 abortions for 2023 (<strong>2,841 abortions daily<\/strong> in the U.S. \u2014 118 abortions per hour, nearly two per minute, and one every 30 seconds.) That same year, <strong>642,700<\/strong> chemical (abortion pill) abortions were recorded by Guttmacher (<strong>53,558<\/strong> a month, <strong>1,761<\/strong>\u00a0daily,\u00a0<strong>73<\/strong>\u00a0hourly, and\u00a0one abortion pill abortion <strong>every 49 seconds<\/strong>.)<\/li>\n<li><b>CDC 2022 data: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded <\/span><b>613,383<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortions for 2022 (latest data available).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Guttmacher range data (50 years) \u2014 1973-2024<\/strong>: The Guttmacher Institute recorded <strong>64,019,025<\/strong> abortions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CDC range data (50 years) \u2014 1973-2022<\/strong>: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recorded <strong>48,997,614<\/strong> abortions (latest data available).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From 1973 to <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021<\/span>, the CDC recorded <b>465<\/b>\u00a0known women&#8217;s deaths from <em>legal<\/em> abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who Publishes Abortion Data<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, abortion data has been compiled by two organizations: The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Guttmacher Institute<\/a>\u00a0(a former Planned Parenthood \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/how-independent-is-guttmacher-from-planned-parenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special affiliate,<\/a>\u201d) and the CDC.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funneled at least $100 million<\/a> to Planned Parenthood, and did not begin publishing abortion data until 1973.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-millions-planned-parenthood-funding-hidden\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The organization<\/a> previously utilized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/article\/2022\/11\/abortion-incidence-and-service-availability-united-states-2020#:~:text=We%20compare%20these%20findings%20to,which%20collected%20information%20for%202017.&amp;text=We%20documented%20930%2C160%20abortions%20in,in%20a%20majority%20of%20states.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">responses to abortion provider surveys<\/a> for its abortion reports. Then, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2023\/guttmacher-launches-new-research-initiative-track-monthly-state-abortion\">late 2023<\/a>, after nearly 50 years of using the same methodology, Guttmacher <em>changed<\/em> this methodology and began publishing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/monthly-abortion-provision-study\"><em>monthly abortion<\/em> <em>estimates<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher did this despite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/monthly-abortion-provision-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">describing<\/a>\u00a0this new methodology as\u00a0<em><strong>less reliable<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0than what had been previously used, writing that \u201cThe Monthly Abortion Provision Study was designed to complement the APC and other data collection efforts by producing a\u00a0<b>slimmer portfolio of data<\/b>\u00a0but at a much quicker pace.\u00a0<strong>Its design is responsive to the needs of policymakers, advocates and other stakeholders in the fast-changing landscape of US abortion policy<\/strong>\u00a0and provision and attempts to minimize the time required of staff at surveyed facilities.\u201d (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<p>In other words, for political expediency, Guttmacher chose to change its reporting methodology to a less accurate method.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_309616\" style=\"width: 882px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309616\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-309616\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology.jpg\" alt=\"Monthly Abortion Reporting Guttmacher &quot;Slimmer portfolio&quot; methodology\" width=\"872\" height=\"707\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309616\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology.jpg 1270w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology-700x568.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology-768x623.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Monthly-Abortion-Reporting-Guttmacher-Slimmer-portfolio-methodology-500x406.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 872px) 100vw, 872px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-309616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monthly Abortion Reporting Guttmacher \u201cSlimmer portfolio\u201d methodology<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe study\u2019s estimates are generated by a statistical model that combines data from samples of providers with historical data on the caseload of every US provider. As more data are collected each month, estimates for past months become more precise. Each estimate is expressed as an uncertainty interval, which quantifies our confidence that the true value falls within a particular range,\u201d Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/news-release\/2023\/new-data-show-interstate-travel-abortion-care-united-states-has-doubled-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The pro-abortion group also noted that its 2024 monthly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/stability-number-abortions-2023-2024-us-states-without-total-bans-masks-major-shifts-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/stability-number-abortions-2023-2024-us-states-without-total-bans-masks-major-shifts-access&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw29IEHUlNjw6WZI_vgqRv2r\">study<\/a>\u00a0 \u201cestimates the number of clinician-provided abortions that take place each month in each US state without a total ban,\u201d but excludes \u201cany abortions provided in states with total bans\u201d as well as those obtained through online pharmacies or other means.<\/p>\n<p>In 1969, years prior to <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, the CDC began an abortion surveillance branch to document the number and characteristics of legally obtained abortions. To date, the CDC relies <em>solely<\/em>\u00a0on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/71\/ss\/ss7110a1.htm#methods\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">data voluntarily reported from the states<\/a>, which individually set the standards for abortion reporting.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, not all states report abortion statistics, and since the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision in 2022, some states (<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/michigan-stop-reporting-abortion-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/minnesota-stops-reporting-abortion-survivors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Minnesota<\/a>) are planning to either stop reporting or scale back what data they publish. Therefore, there are large disparities in abortion data state by state. Some states require no reporting whatsoever, and others collect a variety of data on age, race, gender, gestation, complications, and other categories. As such, Guttmacher\u2019s overall numbers tend to be <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/understanding-abortion-reporting-numbers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">more comprehensive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Since\u00a0<em>Dobbs<\/em>, two agencies have begun to publish\u00a0<em>estimated<\/em>\u00a0abortion data: the Guttmacher Institute and the Society of Family Planning (SFP), the latter of which was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(15)30069-X\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">founded<\/a> in 2005 thanks to a generous contribution from the Packard Foundation, and is <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CaroleNovielli\/status\/1204803418709209090\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">heavily<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/follow-money-pro-abortion-group-suicide-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">funded<\/a>\u00a0by the Buffett Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Guttmacher&#8217;s abortion data previously updated about every two years, but since <em>Dobbs,<\/em> the pro-abortion organization has published monthly abortion <em>estimates<\/em> on a regular basis. CDC data is due to update in November 2024.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Abortion Data\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In April of 2025, the Guttmacher Institute published a <a href=\"https:\/\/guttmacher.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=ca1e42e28a45edcdc4e51bc32&amp;id=f22d4285b9&amp;e=f2fc8d4640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/guttmacher.us8.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Dca1e42e28a45edcdc4e51bc32%26id%3Df22d4285b9%26e%3Df2fc8d4640&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw232NUp1ZNiyO3lz2bZhCfu\">Monthly Abortion Provision Study<\/a>\u00a0for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3LV6a2cuOKBZ_0GYwOxn2m\">2024<\/a> showing \u201c<strong>1,038,100 clinician-provided abortions in states without total abortion bans in 2024<\/strong>, an <strong>increase of less than 1%<\/strong> from 2023\u201d (emphasis added). Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/stability-number-abortions-2023-2024-us-states-without-total-bans-masks-major-shifts-access\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/report\/stability-number-abortions-2023-2024-us-states-without-total-bans-masks-major-shifts-access&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw29IEHUlNjw6WZI_vgqRv2r\">claimed<\/a>\u00a0that \u201c[t]he overall stability in the number of abortions in states without total bans continued despite shifts in policy that have increased obstacles to accessing this care in many states.\u201d<br \/>\nThis new 2024 figure equates to\u00a0<strong>2,844<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>abortions daily<\/strong>, nearly\u00a0<strong>119<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>per hour<\/strong>, nearly\u00a0<strong>two<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>per minute<\/strong>, and slightly more than\u00a0<strong>one every 30 seconds<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The 2024 figure replaced a slightly lower\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3r9p9eZCgVC2bge-2uW_hl\">estimate<\/a>\u00a0of 1,026,690 abortions\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-skyrocketing-63-percent-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-skyrocketing-63-percent-abortion-pill\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0_q45RWiq0CNnkR9NwDE0Q\">published<\/a>\u00a0by Live Action News in March and an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3r9p9eZCgVC2bge-2uW_hl\">updated<\/a>\u00a0estimate of 1,037,000 abortions\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000000;\">for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3r9p9eZCgVC2bge-2uW_hl\">2023<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/guttmacherinstitute.github.io\/provision-dashboard\/#the-estimates\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/guttmacherinstitute.github.io\/provision-dashboard\/%23the-estimates&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165148000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2399RglMZdp5sa-lb9n2gJ\">published<\/a>\u00a0<wbr \/>in<b>\u00a0<\/b><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165149000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0_sSRLvKOslcGJl2qt9BoU\">May of 2024<\/a>, which Guttmacher claimed occured\u00a0in the &#8220;formal health care system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 2023 data represented \u201ca rate of 15.9 abortions per 1,000 women of reproductive age,<a id=\"m_1510794386112052820gmail-box-2\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" name=\"m_1510794386112052820_box-2\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023%23&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165149000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2LCj1g2zAUvu7hrxyZjS0X\">*<\/a> and is an 11% increase since 2020 [930,160\u00a0<a style=\"font-size: large;\" href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-abortion-spike-2020-pregnancies\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165149000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0zJhEbkOm-JtbNEqdC5Qit\">recorded<\/a> in 2020], the last year for which comprehensive estimates are available. It is also the highest number and rate measured in the United States in over a decade,\u201d Guttmacher reported in May 2024.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is important to note that these annual estimates are almost certainly an undercount, as they include only those abortions obtained within the formal US health care system: at brick-and-mortar health facilities, such as clinics or doctor\u2019s offices, and via telehealth and virtual providers,\u201d Guttmacher added.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC\u2019s most recently available data for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/ss\/ss7307a1.htm?s_cid=ss7307a1\">2022<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/first-cdc-report-dobbs-abortions-decreased-2022\/\">recorded<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 613,383 total abortions nationally from 48 reporting areas, a 2% decrease from the 625,978 abortions <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/ss7209a1.htm?s_cid=ss7209a1_w\">reported<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the CDC in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/\">2021<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortions Since 1973<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Abortion data reported in the United States (1973-2024) is now <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744911165149000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0QKNbF_mklyyHr7X-1Oruo\">estimated<\/a> to have reached over 64 million since the <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> Supreme Court decision forced legalized abortion upon every U.S. state. <em>Roe<\/em>\u00a0fell nearly 50 years later on June 24, 2022, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the\u00a0<em>Dobbs v. Wade<\/em> with the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision, the overall number of abortions has gone up. The increase has been notable, rising 11.6% from from the 930,160 abortions reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753218320583000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3sYd5nLis9Xd_eP0SVKLkI\">2020<\/a> to an estimated 1,038,100 abortions reported in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-report-abortion-numbers-end-roe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753218320583000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3sYd5nLis9Xd_eP0SVKLkI\">2024<\/a>, according to the Guttmacher Institute.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Furthermore, the use of abortion pills has surged dramatically, with a staggering increase of nearly 32% from 492,210 in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-skyrocketing-63-percent-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-skyrocketing-63-percent-abortion-pill\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753218320583000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0sRfv9lXWAfZCWj-3it25H\">2020<\/a> (53% of all abortions) to 648,500 in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-2800-daily\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-2800-daily\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753218320583000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0cI-2DJ_F9Aya9VWJ7FqU0\">2023<\/a> (now 63% of all abortions).<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"m_-4618814357186880423gmail-docs-internal-guid-c9c12182-7fff-8ff2-cb08-8b2a49a9ff4c\">\u201cThe number of medication abortions provided in US states without total abortion bans <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/psrh.12294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/psrh.12294&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1753218320583000&amp;usg=AOvVaw07ysKiwo7TeCRM5e9jqMnF\">increased<\/a> by 19% between 2019 and 2020, and by 32% between 2020 and 2023,\u201d Guttmacher researchers reported.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion Pill Numbers\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In March of 2024, Guttmacher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/despite-bans-number-abortions-united-states-increased-2023&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1718733620073000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2nlKmdeeZ2ih2XcSJX7GzD\">estimated<\/a> that the abortion pill had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/03\/medication-abortion-accounted-63-all-us-abortions-2023-increase-53-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accounted<\/a> for 63% of abortions in 2023, a 45% increase from 2017.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Guttmacher&#8217;s abortion data revealed a whopping <strong>642,700<\/strong> chemical (abortion pill) abortions occurring that year. This translates to an abortion pill count of <strong>53,558<\/strong> monthly, <strong>1,761<\/strong>\u00a0daily,\u00a0<strong>73<\/strong> hourly, and one abortion by pill <strong>every 49 seconds <\/strong>in 2023. However, in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/psrh.12294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/psrh.12294&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744238194801000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0YyLaelc6LiuNGLsQFnp83\">February of 2025<\/a>, that number was updated to\u00a0<strong>648,500<\/strong>, which translates to an abortion pill count of <strong>54,042<\/strong>\u00a0monthly,\u00a0<strong>1,777<\/strong>\u00a0<wbr \/>daily,\u00a0<strong>74<\/strong>\u00a0hourly, and one abortion by pill\u00a0<strong>every 49 seconds\u00a0<\/strong>in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The research from Guttmacher\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/monthly-abortion-provision-study\">Monthly Abortion Provision Study<\/a>\u00a0reiterated that its abortion pill counts\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guttmacher.org\/2024\/02\/medication-abortion-within-and-outside-formal-us-health-care-system-what-you-need-know\">don\u2019t include<\/a> those that \u201ctake place outside of the formal health care system\u201d or which are \u201cmailed to people in states with total abortion bans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there are no comprehensive data on the number of self-managed medication abortions in the United States, evidence suggests they\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/2797883\">have been increasing<\/a>\u00a0in the past several years. Therefore, the total count of medication abortions nationally is higher than our count of those offered within the formal health care system,\u201d Guttmacher added.<\/p>\n<p>Previously published data by the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-abortion-pill-6-million-preborn-2000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-abortion-pill-6-million-preborn-2000\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744238194801000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0-MWodn4OD6oXbNJijal18\">Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/a> revealed that from 2000 through the end of December 2022, \u201capproximately 5.9 million women\u201d used the abortion pill mifepristone in the U.S. for \u201cmedical termination of pregnancy.\u201d Updated data <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-report-casualties-abortion-pill-climb\/\">indicates<\/a> that an additional 1.6 million more preborn babies were aborted by pill between 2022 and 2024, an increase of nearly 103% since 2018. According to a February 2025 update <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-mifepristone-medical-termination-pregnancy-through-ten-weeks-gestation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/postmarket-drug-safety-information-patients-and-providers\/questions-and-answers-mifepristone-medical-termination-pregnancy-through-ten-weeks-gestation&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1744238194801000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2pgsJ5t50Y_UB4ZqquWNQK\">published<\/a> by the FDA, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/media\/185245\/download?attachment\">since 2000<\/a>, \u201cThe estimated number of women who have used mifepristone in the U.S. for medical termination of pregnancy through the end of December 2024 is approximately 7.5 million women.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And according to published percentages for ER visits on mifepristone\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2023\/020687Orig1s026lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 label<\/a>, 2.9 to 4.6 percent of women who take abortion drugs end up in the emergency room, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicating<\/a>\u00a0that abortion pill ER visits could be in the\u00a0<em>tens of thousands<\/em>\u00a0every year. In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addition<\/a>, the FDA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DANCO_MedGuide_ENG_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medication guide<\/a> acknowledges that as many as seven percent (7%) of women will need surgery after taking mifepristone &#8220;to stop bleeding&#8221; or to complete the abortion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Planned Parenthood Abortion Numbers\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Planned Parenthood\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/ec\/f4\/ecf43d92-fcd2-4d11-b299-e67b5c3ac394\/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/cdn.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/ec\/f4\/ecf43d92-fcd2-4d11-b299-e67b5c3ac394\/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1713548584059000&amp;usg=AOvVaw05VkbuJt9G1Lf12OjpsKLt\">2022-23 annual report<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/record-breaking-planned-parenthood-annual-abortions-400k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/record-breaking-planned-parenthood-annual-abortions-400k\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1713548584059000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3Gs7HjF79xcXyUfnhV2ES1\">revealed<\/a> that the abortion corporation committed a total of 392,715 abortions that year. This is the highest number recorded to date.<\/p>\n<p>During that time frame, Planned Parenthood held 40% of the abortion market share, killing an average of <strong>1,076 preborn babies every day<\/strong>, nearly\u00a0<strong>45 every hour<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>one every 80 seconds<\/strong>\u00a0in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.plannedparenthood.org\/uploads\/filer_public\/ec\/f4\/ecf43d92-fcd2-4d11-b299-e67b5c3ac394\/2024-ppfa-annualreport-c3-digital.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2022-23<\/a>. That number rose by 13 percent in the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-details-planned-parenthood-record-abortions-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-details-planned-parenthood-record-abortions-funding\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1747515396141000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1nCz3oEqeHeWlIoSRwBdYk\">2023-24 report<\/a>, to a whopping <strong>$800 million<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And while the abortion corporation <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/record-breaking-planned-parenthood-annual-abortions-400k\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serviced<\/a> fewer clients with decreasing legitimate health services, in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-details-planned-parenthood-record-abortions-funding\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/report-details-planned-parenthood-record-abortions-funding\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1747515396141000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1nCz3oEqeHeWlIoSRwBdYk\">2023-24<\/a> Planned Parenthood committed over 57 abortions for every <em>one<\/em>\u00a0prenatal care service, and killed over 187 preborn babies for every\u00a0<em>one<\/em>\u00a0adoption referral.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000, Planned Parenthood has committed over committed\u00a0<strong>over 7.5M abortions<\/strong> (7,534,941) and\u00a0received nearly\u00a0<strong>$11.4B<\/strong> from taxpayers while accumulating nearly $2.2B in excess revenue.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Later Abortion Statistics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A majority of abortions are now committed early in the pregnancy, well before 15 weeks gestation. This brings the\u00a0<em>daily<\/em>\u00a0national death toll for babies killed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/restricting-abortion-15-weeks-save-tens-thousands\/\">at or after 15 weeks<\/a> to nearly 200.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion at or after 21 weeks is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/womens-health-policy\/fact-sheet\/abortions-later-in-pregnancy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimated<\/a> to be about 1% of all abortions. Four percent were Asian and 7% identified as another race or ethnicity or as more than one race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2022, Black women again made up the highest percentages, rate, and ratio of all abortions from 32 areas which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/ss\/ss7307a1.htm?s_cid=ss7307a1#T6_down\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on abortions by race or ethnicity in 2022. Of abortions recorded in the 32 reporting areas to the CDC by race or ethnicity in 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black women \u2014 39.5% of abortions (134,308)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White women \u2014 31.9% of abortions (108,642)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hispanic women \u2014 21.2% of abortions (72,241)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other races \u2014 7.3% of abortions (24,932)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to 2022 data, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\">11.7% of the population in the United States<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is Black. Read more on abortions by race and ethnicity <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-data-black-abortion-twice-high-birth\/\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>While nationally the trend is heading upward, in places like New York City, Black births have now outpaced Black abortions for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-pregnancy-centers-4-million-services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">past several years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to and including 2016, the data revealed that more Black babies were aborted in NYC than had been born. However, in 2017 that trend began to reverse, and continued in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/doh\/downloads\/pdf\/vs\/2020sum.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> (the latest year recorded), where NYC documented 18,162 Black births and 14,043 abortions of Black babies that same year. In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/ss\/ss7307a1.htm?s_cid=ss7307a1#T15_down\">2022<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> CDC recorded <\/span><b><i>five abortion-related deaths<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> legally induced<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortions in <\/span><b>2021. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reveals that nearly a dozen women died from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal abortions<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in just the past two recorded years. Yet the media appears uninterested in the deaths of these women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The government agency defines an abortion-related death as \u201ca death resulting from a direct complication of an abortion (legal or illegal), an indirect complication caused by a chain of events initiated by an abortion, or an aggravation of a pre-existing condition by the physiologic effects of abortion.&#8221; <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC again noted that \u201cAn abortion is categorized as legal when it is performed by a licensed clinician within the limits of state or jurisdiction law.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CDC also noted that from 1998 to 2021, abortion surveillance data reported to the CDC\u2026 excluded \u201cnine reporting areas\u201d which \u201cdid not report abortion data every year during this period.\u201d These non-reporting areas included \u201cAlaska, 1998\u20132000; California, 1998\u20132021; the District of Columbia, 2016; Louisiana, 2005; Maryland, 2007\u20132021; New Hampshire, 1998\u20132021; New Jersey 2021; Oklahoma, 1998\u20131999; and West Virginia, 2003\u20132004.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, while six abortion-related deaths were recorded in 2020, these did not include abortion deaths that might have occurred in states like California, Maryland, or New Hampshire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-cdc-increase-2021\/\">published<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortion-related deaths has now reached <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">465<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 all deaths from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">legal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> abortion recorded by the CDC between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/ss\/ss7307a1.htm?s_cid=ss7307a1#T15_down\">1973 and 2021<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 with additional amounts reportedly dying from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note, 8\/19\/24: This article has been updated with the most recent information and graphs available at this time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Editor\u2019s Note, 12\/2\/24: This article has been updated from 2021 CDC data to 2022 CDC data, however, an <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241107092448\/https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-data-2800-daily\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">archived version<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of this article contains 2021 data not removed.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><em>Editor&#8217;s Note, 4\/9\/25: This article has been updated with new FDA data.
