It doesn&#8217;t."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On June 3, the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the pro-abortion legal advocacy group <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifwhenhow.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If\/When\/How<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/738945925\/Reproductive-Coercion-and-Abuse-Report\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reproductive Coercion and Abuse Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It details the results of a survey conducted on the National Domestic Violence Hotline\u2019s website between October and December of 2023, in which 3,431 anonymous individuals participated.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report\u2019s authors claim that it demonstrates that \u201creproductive coercion is\u2026 enabled by state restrictions on reproductive healthcare.\u201d Similarly, HuffPost <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sg.news.yahoo.com\/domestic-abuse-abortion-bans-create-211210714.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">claimed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the report \u201chighlights the connection between abortion access and intimate partner violence since the Supreme Court repealed federal abortion protections two years ago.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In reality, the report fails to achieve <em>either<\/em> of those things and is actually just more pseudoscience crafted for the sole purpose of advancing a pro-abortion agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Location, location, location<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant state-level legal restrictions on abortion were not possible prior to the Supreme Court\u2019s ruling in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which overturned\u00a0<em>Roe v. Wade<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in June of 2022. Over the course of the approximately two years since that decision, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/states.guttmacher.org\/policies\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">many states<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have enacted significant legal protections for preborn children.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, nowhere in this report&#8217;s extensive laundry list of sundry statistics related to what the authors term \u201creproductive coercion and abuse\u201d are any data provided regarding the home states of survey respondents; it doesn\u2019t provide any information regarding the actual legal status of abortion in respondents\u2019 home states, or even the respondents\u2019 perceptions of what their local abortion-related laws might be. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, the researchers state, \u201cAll responses were anonymous, and we collected no identifying information,\u201d although they did collect demographic data on ethnicity and sexual orientation. They additionally claimed the survey was &#8220;national,&#8221; yet it was online, potentially allowing for users outside the United States to answer as well. The researchers gave almost no information at all about their methodology, and do not mention how they selected participants (or even whether respondents were subjected to <i data-stringify-type=\"italic\">any<\/i>\u00a0kind of screening whatsoever).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, this report fails to connect the experiences of respondents, many of which are admittedly tragic, to the abortion-related state laws which are supposedly applicable to those respondents.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, it shows <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no correlation whatsoever<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between \u201creproductive coercion and abuse\u201d and state-level legal protections for preborn children. For all we know, every person who responded to this survey could be living in states like California, which has enacted extensive legislation designed to promote and protect abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Outside of time<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, although the report has what might be considered an impressive collection of statistics collected during a post-<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> period \u2014 a period in which many states did, in fact, have pro-life legal protections in place \u2014 <strong>it doesn\u2019t even attempt to compare those numbers to a pre-<\/strong><\/span><strong><i>Dobbs<\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> period<\/strong>. Consequently, it fails to show that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or specific pro-life laws had any impact of any kind on the statistics it reports.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The authors claim to prove that state-level pro-life laws sanction \u201creproductive coercion.\u201d But because the report fails to show any kind of change in the prevalence of \u201creproductive coercion\u201d since <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this claim is roughly akin to saying, \u201cDuring the Covid lockdowns, 54% of women reported making attempts to get pregnant. Obviously, lockdowns increased women\u2019s desire for children.\u201d But without telling us the rate of attempted pregnancy <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prior to<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">following<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the lockdowns, claiming lockdowns had any effect on women\u2019s desire to become pregnant <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is completely nonsensical, because it is unsupported by the available evidence. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, due to an absence of comparison data, this report\u2019s claim to demonstrate that pro-life state laws \u201cenable\u201d anything that might be termed \u201creproductive coercion\u201d fall completely flat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exacerbating this problem is the fact that the incidents reported by survey respondents were not temporally limited in any way \u2013 they could have happened before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or even prior to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At least one anecdote quoted in the report <em><strong>happened over 20 years ago<\/strong><\/em>, according to the respondent\u2019s own words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Misrepresenting its own data<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the report\u2019s statistics have absolutely nothing to do with pro-life laws, or even with abortion. Of those that do, the numbers would seem to indicate that it is more common for women to be pressured or forced into having an abortion than it is for them to be dissuaded or prevented from doing so.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The report states that \u201c13% of respondents said their current or former partner pressured or forced them to terminate a pregnancy,\u201d and that \u201c13% of respondents said their current or former partner used or threatened violence while they were pregnant, with the intention of ending the pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, according to the report, \u201c7% said their current or former partner prevented them from using medication abortion [the abortion pill] to have an abortion,\u201d and \u201c9% of the respondents said their current or former partner used or threatened violence if they wanted to or were trying to terminate a pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, by its own data, the report shows that it is <em>more common<\/em> for abusive partners to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">push <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or even<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> violently force <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">abortion upon women than it is for them to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interfere<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, the percentage of survey respondents reporting anti-abortion coercion (between 7% and 9%, depending on specific circumstances) was significantly lower than the percentage of post-abortive women who have reported feeling pressured or coerced into having an abortion in other research. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cureus.com\/articles\/124269-effects-of-pressure-to-abort-on-womens-emotional-responses-and-mental-health#!\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> places this number at 61%; <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theunchoice.com\/coerced.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has placed it as high as 64%.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, although the report urges that \u201c[s]tates must repeal abortion restrictions,\u201d it also reports that 12% of respondents experienced situations in which their past abortions were used against them in some way by abusive partners. It would seem that making abortion more readily available would be anything but helpful to women in that particular situation \u2013 yet the report offers no recommendations whatsoever for protecting these women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There is only one conclusion supported by the evidence provided<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This report is an abject failure when it comes to proving its own claims. However, there <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one valid conclusion that can be drawn from the evidence it provides: abusers are deviously creative and will employ a variety of methods to mistreat their partners. There are men who employ abuse and control in order to force their partners to abort. And there are men who employ abuse and control in order to prevent their partners from aborting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Report authors claim abusers can use pro-life laws to further their abuse \u2014 but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/timesup-planned-parenthood-abusers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overwhelming<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/idaho-man-mother-kidnapping-minor-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> demonstrates that abusers often <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmec.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Health-Consequences-of-Sex-Trafficking-and-Implications-for-Identifying-Victims-Lederer.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">use abortion itself<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to further their abuse. In the end, abusers are going to abuse \u2013 one way or another. The core difference is, when the law protects preborn children, these innocent third parties are less likely to be murdered as a result of that abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, only abusers themselves are to blame for the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coercion and abuse they commit \u2014 circumstances, legal or otherwise, cannot be justly faulted as the cause of abusers&#8217; actions. Promoting the idea that some outside factor is somehow responsible for an abuser\u2019s actions essentially excuses perpetrators from culpability \u2013 and thereby denies justice to victims.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/ARQQhk1\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail for protesting the killing of preborn children.
