So does Planned Parenthood."},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to talking to adolescents about sexuality, pregnancy, and abortion, parents can take a page out of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/online.flippingbook.com\/view\/320259548\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handbook of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 literally. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along with R<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">obert Turrisi, Ph.D., Professor of Biobehavioral Health and Prevention Research Center at Penn State,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> MADD created the Power of Parents handbook to help parents talk to their teenagers about drinking and drunk driving. Turrisi conducted <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/madd.org\/press-release\/madds-power-of-parents-handbook-helps-parents-in-the-fight-against-underage-drinking-and-impaired-driving\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a five-year study on the effectiveness of that handbook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and found that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when parents utilized the Power of Parents Handbook strategies, their teens declined more rides from a driver that consumed alcohol or any drug other than alcohol, and they were less likely to drive impaired.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The importance of encouraging parental monitoring and involvement has also been supported by other studies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/su\/su7201a5.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CDC Parental Monitoring and Risk Behavior Survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCompared with students who reported low levels of parental monitoring, students who reported high parental monitoring experienced more positive health outcomes (e.g., fewer sexual risk behaviors, less substance use, fewer experiences of violence, fewer mental health challenges, and fewer suicide attempts) and engaged in more protective behaviors (e.g., condom use).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_312508\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-312508\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-312508\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic-700x396.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"396\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic-700x396.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic-768x435.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic-500x283.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/cdc-involvement-teens-life-graphic.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-312508\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CDC graphic on importance of parental involvement with teens<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to certain behaviors like drinking and drugs, policy makers and society agree that parental monitoring is important in preventing teens from making bad decisions. But when it comes to sexuality, pregnancy, and abortion, this is not the case. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many think that teenagers should be able to have abortions and without their parents knowing. Why is this? Because the abortion industry and its leader, Planned Parenthood, see parents as an obstacle to teens having sex and then having abortions. Former Planned Parenthood sex educator Monica Cline <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-grooms-abortions\/\">stated in an interview<\/a> that &#8220;risk reduction&#8221; \u2014 not abstinence, of course \u2014 was Planned Parenthood&#8217;s focus when teaching students \u2014 and they taught them explicit information as well. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cRisk reduction is simply telling them how to make the high risk safer by using lubrication and condoms,\u201d Cline said. \u201cThe next step is to make them understand they need to be tested for STD\u2019s every couple months. The sex education grooms them for promiscuity. Grooms them for STD treatment, and grooms them for abortion.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Planned Parenthood and the abortion industry are certainly not above <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-industry-misinfromation-advance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spreading medical misinformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in order to make this happen. In contrast, MADD\u2019s Power of Parents Handbook gives parents a plan to protect teenagers with the truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>An accurate explanation of the adolescent brain<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The MADD handbook teaches parents that teenagers often make impulsive decisions based on emotions without thinking about long-term consequences, a fact that is supported by other accepted scientific research. This means teens need help making good decisions. For example,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/146\/Supplement_1\/S18\/34490\/Adolescent-Brain-Development-and-Medical-Decision?autologincheck=redirected\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an article published by the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(AAP) in 2020 concluded that \u201cthe data establish fairly clearly that most adolescents younger than the legal age of majority <strong><em>have not yet attained a level of brain maturation that justifies treating them like adults with respect to significant, potentially life-altering health care decisions<\/em><\/strong>&#8221; (emphasis added).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In direct contradiction to this, however, the official policy of the AAP is that <em>adolescents should be able to get abortions without parental consent. <\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/150\/3\/e2022058780\/188339\/The-Adolescent-s-Right-to-Confidential-Care-When?autologincheck=redirected\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paper released in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explaining the reasoning behind this policy wrongly cited the above mentioned 2020 article as evidence that adolescents <em>can<\/em> make medical decisions. This is blatant deception.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason given by the AAP to forgo parental consent is that it can cause delays in getting an abortion. This indicates that the medical community wants teenagers to get abortions quickly, before they can change their minds. There is also the false notion that some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/induced-abortion-never-medically-necessary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women \u201cneed\u201d abortions to save their lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so they falsely claim that having involved parents can delay \u201clife saving care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Honesty about the effects of dangerous decisions<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood and the AAP downplay the seriousness of abortion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 2020 paper said that adolescents were not mature enough to make \u201clife-altering health care decisions.\u201d If the public is convinced that abortion is not a big deal, not life-altering, and not killing a human being, then it is easy to convince them that adolescents can make this decision on their own. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood repeats over and over that abortions are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-safe-easy-pro-life-ob\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe and common<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The AAP and Planned Parenthood claim that there are no negative physical or psychological effects from abortion, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/research-really-shows-abortions-physical-risks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but this<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/studies-documents-abortion-infertility\/\">not the case<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They also cite studies that supposedly prove very few women regret their abortions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claims like this are largely based on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-takedown-video-debunks-denied-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Turnaway Study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been shown to be wildly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-authors-continue-deceive-public-abortions-consequences\/\">unreliable<\/a> (low participation and high dropout rates, biased study sample with no true control group, and much more), though it is widely touted by the media and abortion industry. More thorough studies have been done, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-british-journal-of-psychiatry\/article\/abortion-and-mental-health-quantitative-synthesis-and-analysis-of-research-published-19952009\/E8D556AAE1C1D2F0F8B060B28BEE6C3D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which analyzed 22 studies and found &#8220;a moderate to highly increased risk of mental health problems after abortion,&#8221; and stating, &#8220;The finding that abortion is associated with significantly higher risks of mental health problems compared with carrying a pregnancy to term is consistent with literature demonstrating protective effects of pregnancy delivered relative to particular mental health outcomes.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K9X1owHCXPQ?si=4g617izVokeyHpqB\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In contrast, the Power of Parents Handbook is very honest about the dangers of drinking and drunk driving. It includes statistics like, \u201cKids who start drinking young are seven times more likely to be in an alcohol-related crash.\u201d There is a strong message to parents: \u201cWe urge you not to underestimate how dangerous alcohol and marijuana, impaired driving, and riding with impaired drivers are for teens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planned Parenthood\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/parents\/high-school\">words to parents<\/a> are very different from the MADD handbook. They downplay the danger and seriousness of premarital sex and getting an abortion. The language assumes that adolescents are going to have sex and focuses on helping them to get contraception. Planned Parenthood wants your teen to think sex (an incredibly powerful force with the potential to create new life) doesn&#8217;t really <em>have<\/em> risks; they claim it is a casual thing, a mere way of self-expression, and that abortion is an acceptable form of birth control. It\u2019s not a big deal to get pregnant because you can just get an abortion. With the widespread availability of the abortion pill, this now seems more true than ever. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Helping adolescents to delay becoming sexually active is, of course, the best proactive course. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s10578-023-01519-8#:~:text=Among%20these%20experiences%2C%20early%20sexual,and%20to%20society%20%5B3%5D.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A 2023 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">early sexual intercourse (ESI) [before 15] in adolescence is associated with problems in health and social development.\u201d It is important that parents educate themselves and share information like this with their teenage children. Most teenagers under 15 who become pregnant get abortions, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-20s-most-abortions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the CDC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>A method for talking about difficult topics<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The best tool that MADD gives parents is simply a framework for how to talk to their teenagers about difficult topics. They repeatedly reference their<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/online.flippingbook.com\/view\/320259548\/12\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how, what, why model<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not enough to tell your teenager \u201cdon\u2019t drink, don\u2019t have sex, don\u2019t get in a car with someone who is drunk.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Help them develop their growing brains and decision making skills. When possible, ask them thought-provoking questions to help them come to their own conclusions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about what sex is, what its purpose is, why it\u2019s best to wait until marriage. Discuss how powerful their hormones are and how it is hard to think in a moment of attraction\/passion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our society has divorced sex from procreation &#8212; help your teen to see why they are inherently connected, and that when you decide to have sex you decide that you are ready to accept any children that might come from that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MADD urges parents to have these types of serious conversations frequently, not just once, establishing an open, positive relationship with their children. We need to continue to fight against laws that want to take away parental involvement or consent.
