The dating app Bumble issued an apology<\/a> this week for its recent advertisements that appeared to insult the idea of women choosing not to have sex or date. The company was criticized as being disrespectful of women.<\/p>\n

According to the BBC<\/a>, Bumble’s new ad campaign (targeted towards women) included taglines such as, “A vow of celibacy is not the answer” and “Thou shalt not give up on dating and become a nun.” Bumble said the ads were supposed to be funny amidst the frustrations of modern dating, but many people did not find them to be humorous.<\/p>\n

Fast Company reported<\/a> that the “backlash was swift” and social media users accused Bumble of using language that “invalidated women’s sexual autonomy, the experiences of asexual people, and restrictions on reproductive rights.”<\/p>\n

One Instagram user wrote, “Why doesn’t your next campaign focus on men changing their bad behavior instead of telling women to lower their standards and boundaries?”<\/p>\n

Another commented on X<\/a>, “Wild to me that in 2024, a dating app founded by a woman is shaming women.”<\/p>\n
