The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) claims<\/a> to be the “premier professional membership organization for obstetrician\u2013gynecologists,” but ACOG is far from unbiased where abortion is concerned. The organization has referred for, advocated for, and promoted abortion for decades.<\/p>\n

ACOG has a history of ties to population control\u00a0advocates<\/a>, and the group\u2019s move toward decriminalizing abortion began<\/a> in the 1960s; this eventually culminated in the organization’s official support for unrestricted abortion on demand.<\/p>\n

Currently, the group is at the forefront<\/a> of efforts to expand abortion<\/a> \u2014 in particular, the abortion pill (mifepristone).<\/p>\n

ACOG’s Abortion Advocacy Began with Eugenicists<\/strong><\/p>\n

ACOG was originally founded<\/a> in 1951 as the American Academy of Obstetrics and Gynecology before its renaming in May of 1956. ACOG’s shift to abortion advocacy began shortly after its founding, and control of the organization was quickly taken by those involved<\/a> with Planned Parenthood<\/a> \u2014\u00a0the \u201cendemically racist<\/a>\u201d\u00a0Population Council<\/a> and the American Eugenics Society<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 1960, ACOG fellow Dr. Alan F. Guttmacher, a board member of Planned Parenthood who took the helm<\/a> as president in 1962, told media that an ACOG committee had begun a fact-finding expedition<\/em> to liberalize abortion laws. Then, by 1968<\/a>, its leadership had\u00a0moved<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0approve<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0American Law Institute\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Model Penal Code to decriminalize\u00a0abortion<\/a>.<\/p>\n

By then, ACOG\u00a0was led mostly by men connected<\/a> to eugenics<\/a>-based organizations.<\/p>\n

In his book, \u201cAbortion and the Pro-life Movement,\u201d Dr. John Willke claimed that in the mid-1960s, ACOG officials along with Dr. Guttmacher<\/a> sought to redefine the terms \u201cconception\u201d and \u201cpregnancy.\u201d Soon thereafter, ACOG officials worked to change the definition of the beginning of life<\/a> from fertilization<\/em> to implantation<\/em> (in the uterus).<\/p>\n

ACOG Promotes<\/em> Big Abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n

While ACOG is often cited by the media as an unbiased source (and is even cited<\/a> in order to fact check organizations which hold a pro-life position) ACOG backs and partners with the abortion industry, issuing numerous releases, training documents<\/a>, practice bulletins, and committee opinions supporting abortion.<\/p>\n
