{"id":309717,"date":"2024-04-05T16:44:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-05T21:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=309717"},"modified":"2024-04-05T10:09:43","modified_gmt":"2024-04-05T15:09:43","slug":"eugenics-arguments-abortion-pill-supreme-court","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/eugenics-arguments-abortion-pill-supreme-court\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Racist undertones\u2019: Pro-eugenics arguments submitted in Supreme Court abortion pill case"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A declaration submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court in the abortion pill lawsuit <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/four-shocking-admissions-supreme-court-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently argued<\/a> before the Court has come under scrutiny, with some noting that its abortion-favorable contents make arguments in line with a eugenics-based worldview.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net\/files\/AHM-Exhibit2LindoDeclaration.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">written declaration<\/a> submitted in the <em>U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM)<\/em> lawsuit, professor Jason Lindo, <a href=\"https:\/\/vivo.library.tamu.edu\/vivo\/display\/n6d0a2f7d\">an economics professor at Texas A&amp;M University<\/a>, described himself as an &#8220;expert in the field of economics, policy evaluation, and reproductive health care.&#8221; Lindo suggested in his declaration that if pregnant women are denied access to the abortion pill, they will potentially give birth to children who are likely to &#8220;do worse in school&#8221; or see an &#8220;increased likelihood of criminal involvement,\u201d among other ills.<\/p>\n<p>This idea is not new. It&#8217;s simply a recycling of pro-<em>eugenics<\/em> talking points. Eugenics is the belief that the human race can be improved by selective breeding&#8230; or, as has been seen more frequently throughout history, by selective elimination.<\/p>\n<p>Decades ago, when the abortion pill was first brought to the United States, a man connected to the star attorney who argued in favor of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> made the exact same arguments, recommending at the time that President Bill Clinton should strive to \u201celiminate\u201d certain segments of society via vasectomies, tubal ligations, abortions, and the RU-486 abortion pill, now known as mifepristone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Expert promotes eugenic ideas in Court declaration<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My research interests include health economics and issues concerning youth, including the economic effects of abortion and contraceptive policies. As a result of the impacts on their parents, these children are expected to do worse in school (lower test scores and increased grade repetition), to have more behavioral and social issues, and ultimately to attain lower levels of completed education. They are also expected to have lower earnings as adults, poorer health, and an increased likelihood of criminal involvement,&#8221; the economics professor wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Lindo has made these claims before, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/05\/26\/1100587366\/banning-abortion-roe-economic-consequences\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suggesting to NPR<\/a> that &#8220;there are detrimental effects&#8221; on the outcomes of kids whose mothers are denied or delayed from obtaining an abortion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When they grow up, they&#8217;re less likely to attain higher education themselves, they&#8217;re more likely to be involved in crime, have lower adult earnings,&#8221; Lindo claimed.<\/p>\n<p>It should be noted that the much-touted Turnaway Study, which purports to claim that women are harmed by an inability to obtain abortion, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/turnaway-study-takedown-video-debunks-denied-abortion\/\">has been debunked and is riddled with methodological flaws<\/a>, not the <em>least<\/em> of which is the fact that by the final year of the study, only 17% of the original 877 participants remained in the study (approximately 150 women).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eugenics and abortion pill history<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The abortion pill was originally referred to as RU-486 (\u201cRU\u201d for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dash.harvard.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/1\/8889480\/Pinho.pdf?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Roussel-Uclaf<\/a>, the French manufacturer of the pill, and \u201c486\u201d for the drug\u2019s serial number). The company which developed RU-486 also had <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/connection-abortion-pill-zyklonb-gas-holocaust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">connections<\/a> to the company which created the gas used to exterminate Jews in the Holocaust.<\/p>\n<p>A 1999 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/07\/11\/magazine\/the-little-white-bombshell.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the New York Times revealed that Roussel-Uclaf\u2019s parent company, Hoechst A.G. of Germany, \u201cwas one of three corporations that emerged from the breakup of <a href=\"http:\/\/news.google.com\/newspapers?nid=1454&amp;dat=20031111&amp;id=IxlPAAAAIBAJ&amp;sjid=6x8EAAAAIBAJ&amp;pg=6712,3462306\">I.G. Farben<\/a>, the German chemical company that manufactured the cyanide gas, Zyklon B, for Nazi death camps\u2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Author Robert J. Lifton noted in his book, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Nazi-Doctors-Medical-Psychology-Genocide\/dp\/0465049052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Nazi Doctors: <span id=\"productTitle\" class=\"a-size-large\">Medical Killing and the Psychology of Genocide<\/span><\/a>,&#8221; that \u201cThe use of poison gas\u2026 Zyklon-B was the technological achievement permitting \u2018humane killing.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And RU-486 was following in that eugenics vein.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1YuYvyIGWlM?si=j4PRTSdih2YPrqwj\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In 1992, Ron Weddington, a co-counsel of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1992\/09\/27\/books\/she-put-the-v-in-roe-v-wade.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ex-husband<\/a>\u00a0of <em>Roe<\/em> attorney Sarah Weddington, wrote to the newly-elected Bill Clinton administration expressing concern about the growing size of certain population groups. His open letter,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.judicialwatch.org\/press-releases\/judicial-watch-releases-special-report-clinton-ru-486-files\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncovered<\/a> by Judicial Watch, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/roe-v-wade-abortion-pill-eliminate-poor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">read in part<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;\u2026 you can start immediately <strong>to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of our country<\/strong>.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>No, I\u2019m not advocating some sort of mass extinction of these unfortunate people. Crime, drugs and disease are already doing that.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>&#8220;The problem is that their numbers are not only replaced but increased by the birth of millions of babies who can\u2019t afford to have babies. There, I\u2019ve said it.<\/strong> It\u2019s what we all know is true, but we only whisper it\u2026.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>For every Jesse Jackson who has fought his way out of the poverty of a large family there are millions mired in poverty, drugs and crime\u2026.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Weddington understood that the Black community <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-falsely-dismisses-abortion-black-genocide-claim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">viewed<\/a>\u00a0abortion as Black genocide. Rockefeller III in 1952), along with others already\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entrenched<\/a>\u00a0in the eugenics movement. The drug\u2019s distribution was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/09\/30\/us\/abortion-pill-distributor-energized-by-new-mission.html\">later<\/a>\u00a0handed over to Danco Laboratories, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/caselaw.findlaw.com\/ny-supreme-court-appellate-division\/1151610.html\">sub-licensee<\/a> of the Population Council, as Live Action News has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/population-council-founded-eugenicists-promoting-abortion-turns-65\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously<\/a>\u00a0documented.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Population Council, abortion pill clinical trials have also been conducted by another organization <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20180616184524\/http:\/\/gynuity.org\/about\/partners\/#donors\">funded<\/a> by groups with deep historic ties to the American <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/topics\/germany\/eugenics\">eugenics<\/a>\u00a0movement.<\/p>\n<p>A 1991 book published by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I6XfU8KVkzI&amp;t=101m0s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three pro-choice researchers<\/a> suggested that the abortion pill was developed to restrict population growth in minority countries \u2014 eugenics in action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe specific intention of such research was to restrict population growth in countries that were judged to be \u2018underdeveloped.\u2019 If successful, the method(s) could be extended to groups in the United States, Black, Hispanic and Native American Women (Department of Health, Education and Welfare, NIH, USA, 1969),\u201d authors of &#8220;RU 486 Misconceptions Myths and Morals&#8221; wrote.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_309772\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309772\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-309772 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/RU486BookSmall.jpeg\" alt=\"Book &quot;RU486 Misconceptions Myths and Morals&quot; exposes eugenics and abortion pill\" width=\"140\" height=\"224\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-309772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Book &#8220;RU486 Misconceptions Myths and Morals&#8221; exposes eugenics and abortion pill<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cReproductive technological history seems to be repeating itself,\u201d they added. And indeed, the population control agenda of the abortion pill continues today in full force, having <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/us-abortion-pill-lives-lost-adverse-obscured\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ended the lives<\/a> of 6 million babies in the U.S. since its approval in 2000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pro-life Hispanic and Black groups respond\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Lindo&#8217;s eugenics-based ideas were further brought to light in an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Fredrick-Douglas-and-LOC-20240229102154191_240215a-AC-Brief-for-efiling.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">amicus brief<\/a> filed before the U.S. Supreme Court by the National Hispanic Leadership Conference (NHLC) \u2014\u00a0America\u2019s largest Hispanic Christian evangelical organization \u2014 and the Frederick Douglass Foundation (FDF), a not-for-profit organization which supports strengthening the Black family.<\/p>\n<p>Both predominantly minority organizations supported Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine (AHM), the pro-life Respondents in the case.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.supremecourt.gov\/DocketPDF\/19\/19-1392\/184908\/20210726131118652_19-1392_Amici%20Brief%20In%20Support%20of%20Petitioners.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">response<\/a> to Lindo&#8217;s declaration, the pro-life NHLC and FDF expressed outrage, headlining that section of their <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Fredrick-Douglas-and-LOC-20240229102154191_240215a-AC-Brief-for-efiling.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief,<\/a> &#8220;The Federal Government\u2019s Own &#8216;Expert&#8217; in this Case Chillingly Echoes the Eugenicist Aims of Widespread Abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_309787\" style=\"width: 1030px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-309787\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-309787\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert.jpg\" alt=\"Amicus Brief to SCOTUS ties eugenics to abortion pill expert\" width=\"1020\" height=\"709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert-700x487.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert-768x534.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Amicus-Brief-to-SCOTUS-ties-eugenics-to-abortion-pill-expert-500x348.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1020px) 100vw, 1020px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-309787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Amicus Brief to SCOTUS ties eugenics to abortion pill expert<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The groups collectively wrote (emphasis added):<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>Lindo strongly suggests that, based on these expectations, abortion is preferable to allowing the child to live. Put simply, <strong>the FDA\u2014a federal agency\u2014submitted a supporting declaration that claims that children should be aborted because they are more likely to be unfit for school, for adulthood, and for society<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the allegation that children born to mothers who do not have access to abortion-inducing drugs could turn out to be criminals, the pro-life groups claimed that &#8220;Dr. Lindo\u2019s perspective is not new: It is rooted in the eugenics movement and consistent with contemporary scholarship.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The groups were referring to <a href=\"https:\/\/law.stanford.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/The_Impact_of_Legalized_Abortion_on_Crime.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial research<\/a> previously published by John J. Donohue and Steven D. Levitt and updated in their book <em>Freakonomics\u00a0<\/em>in which the pair\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/where-did-planned-parenthood-motto-every-child-wanted-child-lead-us\/\">claim<\/a> that the legalization of elective abortion in the 1970s led to the decline in violent crime in the 1990s. Other economists have <a href=\"https:\/\/journalistsresource.org\/economics\/abortion-crime-research-donohue-levitt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disputed<\/a> those claims.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Again, it is hard not to observe the racist undertones of such theories, given that the abortion rate is higher among black and Hispanic women,&#8221; NHLC and FDF stated in their brief.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed that while the abortion rate percentage among white women <em>decreased<\/em> from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-unmarried-women-9-times-abort\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, it <em>increased<\/em>\u00a0nearly six percent (5.86%) among Black women (39.2% in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-communities-color-impacted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>\u00a0v. 41.5% in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021)<\/a>. Likewise, Hispanic women also saw an abortion percentage\u00a0<em>increase<\/em>\u00a0of over three percent (3.3%) in 2021, (21.7% in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cdc-report-communities-color-impacted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2020<\/a>\u00a0v. 21.8% in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is disproportionately targeting minority communities.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-black-hispanic-increased-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, while white Americans made up 58.2% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, they accounted for 30.2% of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. Yet, Black Americans made up 11.6% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, and accounted for 41.5% of abortions in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/ss\/pdfs\/ss7209a1-H.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. Hispanic Americans made up 19% of people living in the United States in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/other\/state-indicator\/distribution-by-raceethnicity\/?currentTimeframe=1&amp;sortModel=%7B%22colId%22:%22Location%22,%22sort%22:%22asc%22%7D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, and accounted for 21.8% of abortions that same year.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In any event, potential difficulties in a child\u2019s future should not justify aborting that child. Yet Dr. Lindo\u2019s declaration reflects that prevailing sentiment among so called experts that mifepristone may be used as &#8216;a disturbingly effective tool for implementing the discriminatory preferences that undergird eugenics,'&#8221; the pro-life groups emphasized in their brief.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion has long been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/washpo-dishonestly-downplay-abortion-eugenics-ties\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tethered to eugenics<\/a>, with certain segments of society \u2014 including communities of color \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">targeted<\/a> to this day for eugenic abortions. Advocates of abortion often <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/reproductive-injustice-eliminating-minorities-poor-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">paint<\/a> the killing of the children of the disadvantaged as a solution to poverty, or as a stepping stone out of a life of poverty. But the facts simply do not bear this out.<\/p>\n<p>This eugenic philosophy of abortion has little to do with helping <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/taxpayer-funded-abortion-hyde-poor-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the disadvantaged<\/a> and instead serves to\u00a0<em>eliminate<\/em>\u00a0them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/ARQQhk1\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail for protesting the killing of preborn children.
