Food and Drug Administration<\/em>) argued, the FDA&#8217;s reckless decision to expand abortion pill access by removing the in-person requirement for women to obtain the drug and allow mail order and pharmacy dispensing of the deadly pills is creating an environment whereby potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tens of thousands of women<\/a> are presenting to emergency rooms after taking the abortion pill regimen.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit is asking the Supreme Court to reinstate \u201cessential safeguards\u201d put in place on the abortion pill in a safety system called REMS by the FDA prior to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-abortion-pill-timeline-events\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Setting the Stage: Salon&#8217;s Big Abortion Spokespersons<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Writers of a Salon piece, entitled, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/03\/20\/yes-some-medication-abortion-patients-go-to-the-er--but-it-may-not-be-for-what-you-think\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yes, some medication abortion patients go to the ER \u2014 but it may not be for what you think<\/a>,&#8221; drew their ridiculous conclusions from spokespersons tied to Big Abortion, namely Ushma Upadhyay and Dr. Kara Cadwallader.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ushma Upadhyay <\/strong>was introduced by Salon as &#8220;a public health scientist at Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health (ANSIRH), based at the University of California-San Francisco.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But Salon gave no background about ANSIRH, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ansirh.org\/about\/ansirh-founder-felicia-hance-stewart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">founded<\/a>\u00a0by abortionist Felicia H. Stewart and is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.packard.org\/grants-and-investments\/grants-database\/regents-of-the-university-of-california-san-francisco-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">funded<\/a> by the Packard Foundation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-money-trail-abortion-pill-corruption\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">provided<\/a> early financial assistance to the abortion pill\u2019s U.S. manufacturer, Danco. Packard also <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-investor-millions-generic-company\/\">invests<\/a>\u00a0millions in the generic version of the drug made by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-die-abortion-pill-fda-generic\/\">GenBioPro<\/a>, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>Upadhyay is a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bixbycenter.ucsf.edu\/ushma-upadhyay-phd-mph\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">professor<\/a>\u00a0at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) and has\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/story\/2023-01-06\/abortion-pills-pharmacies-fda-cvs-walgreens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">argued<\/a> that the FDA should \u201cremove as many barriers as possible\u201d on the abortion pill. She oversaw \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-studies-approve-mail-order-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The California Home Abortion by Telehealth (CHAT)<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT04432792?term=%22Ushma+Upadhyay%22&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Study<\/a>\u201d which took place at ANSIRH, and was an early advocate of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-abortion-pill-fda-ectopic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cno test\/no touch<\/a>\u201d protocol for the abortion pill, which eliminated important preliminary labs, testing, and ultrasounds \u2014 potentially placing <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-complications-underreported-er-managing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">women in harm\u2019s way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Buffett Foundation, another early abortion pill investor, <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190613012041\/https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/institutional-research-academic-planning\/_files\/non-profit-research-funding.pdf\">invests<\/a> in Upadhyay&#8217;s employer, the University of California (UC) system, and is a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT03320057?term=mifepristone%2C+grossman&amp;cond=abortion&amp;draw=2&amp;rank=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">collaborator<\/a>\u00a0in abortion pill clinical trials. In past years, Buffett\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190613012041\/https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/institutional-research-academic-planning\/_files\/non-profit-research-funding.pdf\">gave<\/a>\u00a0$78 million to UC \u2014 and according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/07\/18\/magazine\/18abortion-t.html\">New York Times<\/a>, Buffett is the\u00a0<em>primary financier<\/em>\u00a0of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paying-millions-abortion-training-taxpayers\/\">Bixby Center\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0Ryan Residency Program at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/whos-who-abortion-pill-reversal-study\/\">UCSF<\/a>, where abortionists are trained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dr. Kara Cadwallader<\/strong> is described by Salon as &#8220;a family medicine physician in Idaho&#8221; but what Salon conveniently left out is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fullcircleidaho.org\/residency\/residents-faculty\/kara-cadwallader-md\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cadwallader<\/a> is also <a href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/910686012\/202233199349320043\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">chief medical officer<\/a> for Planned Parenthood Great Northwest, Hawaii, Alaska, Indiana, Kentucky. Cadwallader is a graduate of UCSF School of Medicine with multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vitals.com\/doctors\/Dr_Kara_Cadwallader.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poor reviews<\/a> posted to Vitals.com.<\/p>\n<p>The article listed multiple reasons as to why women might actually be visiting the ER after taking the abortion pill:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason #1: Women live far away from non-emergency medical assistance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the Salon article, Upadhyay claimed (without citing any evidence), \u201cOftentimes, the entire abortion is taking place at home, they live far from an abortion provider or a clinician who they can just walk into or visit if they have any questions about the side effects they&#8217;re experiencing,\u201d Upadhyay said \u2014 hence, the emergency room is their only option, Salon claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the FDA&#8217;s REMS safety system <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/rems\/Mifepristone_2023_03_23_REMS_Full.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requires<\/a> that prescribers of the abortion pill mifepristone have the &#8220;ability to provide surgical intervention in cases of incomplete abortion or severe bleeding, or to have made plans to provide such care through others, and ability to assure patient access to medical facilities equipped to provide blood transfusions and resuscitation, if necessary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason #2: Significant amounts of bleeding<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cadwallader suggested that bleeding and pain were &#8220;common&#8221; reasons for women to go to emergency rooms after taking abortion pills, according to Salon.<\/p>\n<p>Upadhyay made a similar claim, telling Salon that \u201cSometimes it&#8217;s a lot of bleeding and they have questions about whether this amount of bleeding is normal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fact is that, the abortion pill has been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ny-abortion-center-missed-period\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sold<\/a> as a &#8220;simple&#8221; way to end a pregnancy. It is good to have some thick overnite type maxi pads ready along with a heating pad to help with cramping. carafem provides anti-nausea and pain medication to help handle these symptoms.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>For most people, the heaviest bleeding and cramping ends once the pregnancy has passed, usually within 3-4 hours.\u00a0<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to Salon, even though many abortion facilities offer pain medications, &#8220;the patient might be seeking out additional options for pain management as passing the fetal tissue can be quite painful.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe give ibuprofen and use heat and ways to manage that pain, but both bleeding and pain should decrease\u201d once the tissue has passed, Cadwallader told Salon. \u201cWe tell folks if you\u2019re soaking through a maxi pad, two, in an hour to two hours, they should seek help.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Seek help from where?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Cadwallader doesn&#8217;t say, despite the REMS requirement that the prescriber be able to offer assistance or refer women for help where needed.<\/p>\n<p>Still, one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.contraceptionjournal.org\/article\/S0010-7824(22)00440-1\/fulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">observational study<\/a> conducted at two centers in Bologna, Italy, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-40-percent-women-pain-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that 40% of women experienced severe pain when undergoing chemical (abortion pill) abortions. And Live Action\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/i-saw-my-baby\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I Saw My Baby website<\/a> details the horrific fallout when women see their own aborted children floating in the toilet after taking the drugs at home.<\/p>\n<p>Serena Dyksen, founder of the post-abortive ministry <a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shefoundhisgrace.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-stringify-link=\"https:\/\/www.shefoundhisgrace.org\" data-sk=\"tooltip_parent\">She Found His Grace<\/a>, knows this all too well. She operates the <em>I Regret My Abortion<\/em> Facebook group, and she told Live Action News that women often tell the group that abortion providers offered little information about what to expect when taking the abortion pill.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHere\u2019s what I can say about the abortion pill: we have women that text us, and we\u2019ve seen it in other places too [i.e., the regret groups], women say that they were lied to. They thought that it wasn\u2019t going to be a big deal. And they are traumatized on a new level, because now they are seeing their babies. They\u2019re told just to flush them. It has affected their mental health in a whole new way that I don\u2019t think people are really prepared for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Reason #3: Inaccurate pregnancy tests<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When was the last time you heard of anyone presenting to the emergency room because a pregnancy test was not accurate? Yet that is what Salon claims is a reason women visit ERs after taking abortion pills.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Frequently, Upadhyay said, medication abortion patients will actually go to the emergency department to seek clinical care and make sure that the medication worked. That\u2019s because a pregnancy test won\u2019t be accurate for at least four to five weeks after a medication abortion, because the pregnancy hormones need time to leave the person\u2019s system,&#8221; Salon wrote.<\/p>\n<p>But the fact is, as AHM <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/emergency-room-visits-abortion-pill-tens-thouands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> in its <a href=\"https:\/\/adfmedialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net\/files\/AHM-OpeningBrief.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief<\/a>\u00a0before the Supreme Court, that the FDA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earlyoptionpill.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/DANCO_MedGuide_ENG_Web.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medication guide<\/a> acknowledges that as many as seven percent (7%) of women will need surgery after taking mifepristone &#8220;to stop bleeding&#8221; or to complete the abortion.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023 alone, that would potentially be between <em>13,000 and 45,000<\/em> women.<\/p>\n<p>Still, the question remains, why would women seek care at emergency rooms to confirm the abortion was complete instead of <em>going back the provider who sold them the abortion<\/em>? And as Live Action News <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/bad-actors-conceal-abortion-pill-complications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">previously documented<\/a>, Big Abortion encourages women and doctors to conceal abortion pill complications.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People go to the emergency room to get care and to ask questions and to get clinical support,&#8221; Upadhyay suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, the PBS NewsHour interviews were conducted by Sarah Varney, a <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/news\/author\/sarah-varney\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">health reporter<\/a> for KFFHealthNews.org, <a href=\"https:\/\/kffhealthnews.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> as &#8220;one of the three major operating programs at\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/about-us\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/about-us\/\">KFF<\/a>.&#8221; KFF, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/public-broadasting-fund-abortion-industry\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">otherwise known<\/a> as The Kaiser Family Foundation or The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, has on its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kff.org\/current-financials-and-funds-we-receive-from-foundations-and-other-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> a list of its supporters.
