Fire Chief Chris Reed is planning for his fire station to be the first to house a baby box in Maine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the station in Rumford constructs a new and improved building, they\u2019re <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newscentermaine.com\/article\/news\/local\/public-safety\/first-baby-box-maine-new-firehouse-rumford-community\/97-a182875f-3ba2-4b83-b620-80c1178689e8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">making room<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for this baby box, which will allow newborns up to 31 days old to be left in the care of first responders.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Rumford, high risk behaviors like drug use, poverty, and decreasing family support make this baby box very needed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s a prime location,&#8221; Reed said. \u201cThere&#8217;s not a lot of services here that would be available to a newborn mother in Rumford.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The town hospital closed down its maternity ward in February of 2023. Further explaining Rumford\u2019s need for a baby box, Reed explained that placing a baby in the box is a much better option than \u201cin bad conditions, left alone in a car\u2026 It\u2019s a last-minute option to give the mother an option to place the baby in a safe location.&#8221; <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a newborn has been placed in the box, the door locks for security, and the baby can only be retrieved by a first responder. In an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wgme.com\/news\/local\/rumford-hopes-to-put-in-states-first-baby-box-but-dhhs-still-needs-to-make-the-rules\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">interview with WGME<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Reed explained what immediate care is given when a baby is left in the box: \u201cAs soon as the baby\u2019s in there, we would take the baby, maintain its life and get Med-Care, the ambulance service, and take it to Rumford Community Hospital.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A silent alarm sounds when the box is first opened by a parent; once the box closes, the fire station staff will be notified via page as well as another alarm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/infant-indiana-baby-box-17th-2023\/\"><em>Infant surrendered in Indiana marks 17th Safe Haven Baby Box save this year<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Commenters on WGME\u2019s news article show <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wjbq.com\/maine-safe-haven-baby-box\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mixed responses<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with some praising the installation and others claiming that a baby box \u201creward[s] bad behavior\u201d and places children in the line of \u201cabuse in foster care\u201d or \u201ctrafficking.\u201d But another commenter cut to the core of the issue, writing, \u201cSo sad that this even has to be a thing.\u201d While it is indeed sad, many courageous parents have chosen to offer their children a chance at life by leaving them with first responders instead of abandoning them to die.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although the Safe Haven Baby Boxes were allowed in Maine starting in 2021, the Department of Health and Human Services has yet to put a set of rules in place to regulate the process of care and home placement for the infants. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rumford Representative Rachel Henderson (R) stated, \u201cAt times, rule-making can take time. But when we\u2019re talking about the lives of children and newly born babies, time is of the essence.\u201d Henderson has taken the initiative to start a petition for the people of Rumford to voice their need for the DHHS to follow through with their duty and create rules for how these infants will be placed in homes. As of March 11th, over 180 signatures had been gathered. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we explained what the signatures were for, we didn\u2019t get one person who wasn\u2019t willing to sign\u2026 The time has come. The stars are aligning and it\u2019s time for rulemaking to be put in place,&#8221; said Henderson.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senator Lisa Keim (R) of Dixfield added, \u201cThis could save a tragedy from happening.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">DHHS has previously stated they will publish the rules at some point in 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/ARQQhk1\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail for protesting the killing of preborn children.
