Lawmakers want radical assisted suicide expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">California lawmakers are considering a bill that would radically expand assisted suicide in the state and remove many of the safeguards designed to keep it from being abused.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/CA\/text\/SB1196\/id\/2929126\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SB 1196<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the \u201cEnd of Life Option Act,\u201d would make a number of changes to the state\u2019s assisted suicide law. In a <a href=\"https:\/\/img1.wsimg.com\/blobby\/go\/cd607dce-3325-492b-b030-b0a22331af65\/downloads\/SB%201196%20(Blakespear)%20Factsheet.pdf?ver=1709911469736\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fact sheet<\/a>, the bill\u2019s sponsor, Sen. Catherine Blackspear, outlined her aim to loosen the current restrictions in a number of ways, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">removing a 48-hour requirement between two separate assisted death requests<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowing assisted suicide for non-residents\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allowing assisted suicide drugs via IV<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expanding eligibility to allow assisted death for those with early to mid stage dementia<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">replacing the requirement that a person must have a \u201cterminal disease;\u201d instead, one must have \u201ca grievous and irremediable medical condition&#8221;<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an o<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/california-plans-to-kill-terminal-illness-requirement-for-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">p-ed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Wesley J. Smith, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">author and a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute\u2019s Center on Human Exceptionalism,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pointed out that the replacement of the terminal disease stipulation would greatly widen eligibility for assisted suicide, noting that it \u201ccould include all manner of conditions, from diabetes, to early stage cancer, to an elderly person becoming frail, to MS, to paraplegia.\u201d He noted, \u201cIndeed, this would allow people with ailments access to hastened death no matter the potential efficacy of care options.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>READ: <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-death-skyrockets-canada-2022\/\"><em>Shock report: Assisted death rates skyrocket in Canada in 2022<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gordon <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Friesen, President of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/alexschadenberg.blogspot.com\/2024\/03\/california-senator-drops-mask-proposes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">warned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that should this bill become law, California would rival Canada, which has established itself as one of the most liberal assisted death nations in the world as it is regularly stripping its safeguards and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-expansion-drug-addicted-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expanding eligibility<\/a> for assisted death. Many stories from that country have emerged of people being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-doctors-pressure-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pressured<\/a> into assisted death for various conditions, or being approved for things like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-assisted-death-canada-wait-time-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unavailable medical care<\/a> or poverty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCalifornia SB 1196 does not represent a mere expansion of eligibility requirements for a choice-based system of assisted death. It actually signals a full-blown tipping-point, where publicly funded medicine in that State will begin its transition to a euthanasia-based utilitarian paradigm of death-medicine \u2014 a routine substitution of death for care \u2014 as already observed in Canada,\u201d Friesen wrote. He added that the proposed expansion underscores the irony of one of the biggest arguments pro-assisted death proponents make as they argue for its legalization: safeguards to keep it in check.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It will at least become more difficult for apologists of assisted death to keep a straight face \u2014 or even to make eye contact \u2014 when using the word &#8216;safeguards&#8217; (or disparaging the &#8216;slippery slope&#8217;),&#8221; he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/actnow.io\/ARQQhk1\"><b><i>The DOJ put a pro-life grandmother in jail for protesting the killing of preborn children.
